Bioshock. I really don't get what people like about this game. It's got terrible FPS mechanics, and the story and setting is just...bleh.
Are you serious? I mean, I love the game, but I can accept criticism to its story or gameplay, but the setting?! Really?! Aren't you tired of running the same spaceship corridors, or hills, or war-torn cities? If nothing else, one criticism that should never be aimed at Bioshock is that of a bad setting! A 1950's sunken art-deco city?! That is awesome by itself.

I thought of another one, but this one will be almost as unpopular as saying Bioshock but still...I really regret getting Braid. Sure it was only $15, but I didn't enjoy a second of the time I spent playing it. It's the first (and last) game I bought because of reviews. It's also the game that made me more bitter to the "games as art" argument because if this is gaming as art, I'd rather just go back to games as games where they are fun.

But hey, to each their own. If you loved it, I'm glad you did. I just couldn't find the fun in it even though I really want to.

That's what I felt. The story just seemed too disjointed (maybe I played it while tired and missed important things to tie it all together), but the setting is what made me finish it. The entire game world was beautiful and grotesque at the same time. If all games settings were as well thought out and delivered as well as Bioshock I'd be a happy gamer.

Seriously? This goes for everyone who seriously thought ODST had a good story. I'm not even trying to be a dick, but what the hell?

I just beat Reach and feel that the stories are extremely similar except for two crucial elements that ruined the story of ODST for me.
I can see where you're coming from here: two games set in the Halo universe, both involving squads of badass soldiers. However, they don't feel the same in terms of atmosphere and the nature of the fighting is quite different. ODST had a sense of lonliness and isolation for all the parts you play as "The Rrookie", until the crowning moment of awesome that is the last level - one of the Halo series' better vehicle chase/race sequences if you ask me.

1. Buck: Everything about this character seemed out of place in the Halo universe for me, and I mean EVERYTHING. His attitude did not fit the serious nature of the game, but was to frequent to call comic relief. Thank God he barely shows up in Reach.
He was just egotistical. I don't really see why this is so horribly out of place for you - most of the marines in the Halo universe mouth off quite a bit, and although the few and far between ODSTs you see in Halo 3 are more like the silent protagonist in ODST, I think Buck's overall attitude contributed well to the overall characterization of his team.

2. Love: Ok, I get that Master Chief and Cortana is a slight love story. Really, I consider it to be much deeper than that, delving into issues of human/AI friendship that actually show up in Reach's datapads. But the love story between Buck and ***** Who's Name Doesn't Matter was so forced and the drama in it was so frequently fluctuating, that it took ANY realism or emotion and destroyed it.
I agree. The moment where Dare pulls Buck in for a kiss was one of the most awkardly executed moments in gaming history. I get that buck and Dare had a relationship, and I was happy to accept that up until that point. But that's the moment where Dare went from badass black ops Oni operative to pitiful damsel in distress who needs the big bad male lead to come rescue her perky ass.

I have a few other problems with the plot as well. Unless you read the books, Reach and ODST are both about random military squads with an unusually quiet member, and both stories are presented with little to no background information about any of the characters. ODST's basic plot for a non Halo gamer is literally described in one short paragraph:

'You wake up after crashing and your team is gone. You find shit about them and subsequently trip balls and re-enact their day to find out that they are either dead or looking for some AI or engineer or something that mattered I think. Plus Buck loves some *****. The End.'
I don't read the books, and do not follow the story beyond what is encapsulated by the games cutscenes and in-game level progression/vocal exposition. I had played Halo CE and Halo 3 - at that point I had no real familiarity with the story of Halo 2. I had no difficulty following the storyline. Something I think a lot of people failed to realise is that ODST was as much about the city itself (or more correctly the Superintendant/Virgil), as it was the Rookie. I remember Yahtzee commenting in one of his EP columns that the Rookie uses his magicalpsychic powers to "see" stuff that happened earlier in the day... which isn't the case at all. The Rookie is following a series of clues to track down his squad - occasionally he finds some ODST ordinance (Dare's helmet, the medi-foam canister, the bent sniper rifle) and knows he's on the right track.
The scenes WE play through are what VIRGIL saw earlier in the day.

I think it was a fascinating way to execute the storytelling experience. As a plot? It's not particularly strong, but you can break ANY piece of media down into a couple of sentences if you want, and equally make any piece of media sound like utter shit if you don't give it the respect it deserves.
Is The Lord of the Rings just about "some short guys with hair feet who walk a long way to drop a ring in a volcano, occasionally assisted by elves and a wizard"?

Reach's story is well presented and actually has a degree of meaning in the Halo universe. While playing as Noble Six you honestly feel as though your actions will potentially contribute to saving the entire Human Race. And THAT'S mainly why I didn't like ODST's story.
Yeah, but ODST was really more about stepping into the shoes of the Helljumpers and seeing what happens. It was intended as a spinoff/expansion for a reason - it's not part of the main story. The ending, in retrospect, was more of a teaser for Reach than anything else - they're excavating something on earth and it turns out Dr. Halsey was studying something similar on Reach too... and ultimately these forerunner installations were the key to seizing control of - and destroying - the Halo rings, which led to the defeat of the Covenant and the destruction of the Flood... presumably.

Plus: No competitive multiplayer. Shitty firefight. Little to no upgrades from Halo 3 engine. And it was INITALLY A FREAKIN EXPANSION PACK.
It was built on the Halo 3 engine, they never promised anything more than that. There's no competitive ODST multiplayer because the ODST multiplayer WAS the Halo 3 multiplayer. You may feel like Firefight was shit, I personally thought it was a fun idea - I much prefer it to the Gears of War horde mode it allegedly ripped off. I'm glad it was included in Reach with matchmaking.

So not worth $60... if it was even $10-$15 dollars cheaper I'd reconsider.
It's either worth playing or not, quibbling over whether it should have been a few bucks cheaper is just nitpicking - ultimately, you voted with your wallet.

Assassin's Creed 1 and 2, truly, the only games I do enjoy buying seem to be RPG's by Bioware and Bethesda and Obsidian(not alpha protocol though). I also enjoy multiplayer games as well.

Although I purchased plenty of bad games before I paid attention to review scores (both the Eragon and beowulf video games are most prominent and the least amount of fun). The one game I truly regret buying (or being given, in this case) is Endwar. The game is an RTS in which you can use the xbox 360 headset to control your troops using voice commands. The game received decent reviews when it came out but I didn't enjoy it at all. I got the headset for the game and despite the novelty of voice commands (which are inaccurate at best) the actual gameplay and story seemed t be extremely uninteresting and the mission variety sucked. I still regret asking for it for christmas.

Bioshock, it was not worth $5.
Haha, good one... Now seriously take that the fuck back right the fuck now.
Nope, Unlike most people I was able to see through the interesting setting and realize how shit the GAME part of the GAME was.
Ok, I agree on the point that Bioshock is one of those: 'You can go faster later in the game! So we make your character retardedly slow!' And: 'You need a power for this now! What? Later? Nah, we don't do that. GET POWER NOW!' games.

But come on! $5,- for a game that had reasonable graphics and a well plotted storyline! You hardly have the right to complain because you spent 5 bucks!

For me I wasted money on Warhammer 40.000 Strike Command. ?20,- for only 15 levels (ball bustingly hard levels) and the facade of being Real Time. It's not |-( the back of the game dissapointed me.

There is no music, only some flash animations (with tweeeeeens! |-( ) and the soldiers cry 'waarlgh, for thee emporowr' when they die. There is a 'Finish turn' option, but to do that, you need to pause the game. Why don't you have a shortcut for that?!
I can complain about the cost because at no point was I enjoying it. Almost every moment made me want to tear my hair out and burn my hardrive in frustration because of how broken it was. for that experience, any price above is a waste of money.

I'm sure you've already recieved a lot of crap for these comments, but here's some more anyway. Bioshock was the only shooting game on 360 that wasn't complete generic bullcrap. How can you say the GAME part of the GAME was bad? It was the only FPS that even had a GAME. Walking around a sunken city looking for gene modifications that grant you new, powerful, diverse, and creative abilities that grant you access to new parts of the city is a bad GAME? Defeating hulking metallic monsters to recieve material that let's you empower and modify your character in a way that suits your prefered play style is a bad GAME? Discovering secret passages and fragments of civilization that give you more of a glimpse into the cities past and how it fell is a bad GAME? What exactly are you talking about? It had the exact same camera and controls as Halo, combined with an almost Metroid style exploration and progression mechanic. I agree with the notion that a game's story and setting are vastly less important than the gameplay and controls, but Bioshock was brilliant in nearly everything it. Are you trying to start something, or are you just retarded?
Well I've explained many times before, but here I go again. Incredibly poor hit detection, if you can even call it that. I've consistently seen crossbow bolts phase through enemy heads. This doesn't mix well with basics mooks being able to take more hits than an M1Abrams tank, resulting in every firefight costing half my ammo from every gun; a commodity that's in such short supply that I'm amazed a civil war could ever take place. I was almost always out of ammo, not trying to scrounge up enough to get by but just out, comletely, only leaving the wrench as a viable option, and this is despite looting everything I saw, making more, and even pulling it out of my ass (I'm pretty sure that last one was a glitch). You ever been forced to beat an elite bouncer to death. And I know what your going to say so stop right there, what about plasmids? the things the game's based around? Well yes I suppose I should've used those to save ammo, oh wait, I tried that, they were fucking useless. The ones that are supposed to cause damage do virtually no damage, and the ones that distract just don't. You'd think being engulfed in flames would be cause for alarm, but no the enemies are perfectly content to keep shooting while they patiently await the flames to go out, I guess they realize they really aren't that dangerous considering how little damage they do. The fact is that everything about how the game plays is broken, which is why the vita chambers were implemented. The developers knew the game was a task in masochism so they added them in to make the game winnable without actually fixing its problems. This is why the game sucks. Setting and atmosphere are the only things the game does well. Everything else sucks.
I totally see where your coming from, and I agree with a lot of it, but I know people who've beaten the game w/o vita chambers on the hardest difficulty. It's all about using plasmids creatively. I don't like the game as much as most people do, but I respect everything about it and realize that it's one of the few truly unique games of this generation. There should be much fewer combat based games today (about 90% of shit that's announced today is some guy swinging around swords on chains and chopping up hordes of inbreds) and of those, more should be like Bioshock. Also, it's worth 5$.
I'd agree with you if unique was synonomous with fun. I respect your opinion, but I'll take generic, fun, drivel over unique but frstrating and boring anytime. I couldn't even really enjoy the story or atmosphere anyway because when I was in those moments I couldn't stop dreading the thought that the gameplay would soon return.

When I was but a wee lad, my father and I went to the store to get me a Playstation 2. I was full of joy, oh yes I was. To celebrate this moment, I bought a game. That game was Surfing H30. To accurately describe the torture caused by that game, I would have to destroy all life in the process. It was that bad, that broken, that unplayable, that shitty.

When I was about 14, I bought a Mortal Kombat compilation for the PSOne.

I thought I'd love it as much as I did in the arcade, but the intervening introduction to Tekken just meant that I found it virtually unplayable.

My husband also bought me Soul Calibur 4 when it came out, and considering how awesome 3 was, the development team appeared to have totally phoned it in.

The Elder Scross IV: Oblivion.
I'm sorry, but I just couldn't get into it at all. There were so many things about the game that annoyed me, I just hated the whole thing, which was a shame because I generally like these types of RPGs. Then again, I honestly wasn't expecting much.

No you can go ahead and bombard me with comments about how I "don't understand" the game.

Oh, and also this PS2 game called "RTX Red Rock." Controls were stiff and awkward, combat system was confusing and unbalanced, and the all-around design of the game was just... weird.
It wasn't horrible, but it was disappointing. But again, I wasn't expecting much from this one either.

Resonance of fate, because the gameplay sucks. Didn`t play long enought to have anything to say on the story, but the characters are... Boring. Yeah. And that cost a lot too, 600 KR, in USD that is around hundred dollars. Wow, that seems like a lot of money. But in Norway it isn`t as much as it seems, is`s a bit exspensive, but around the normal price for a brand new game. Still, worst game I`ve bought.
