Whatever spawned this.
You seriously think FF7 shouldn't have been made? really?
I second this, a horrible game that spawned an entire generation of horrible games.
I'm not going to flame or complain here. Just going to say...
/ Countered

Just in case the Gaming Gods decide to make a terrible mistake and delete that masterpiece from history. Along with it the inspiration for several of my fictional works and traditions.

The Madden series for obvious pumping out an expansion pack every year.

And Halo 1 onward, because the series has stagnated since then. It also spawned Red vs. Blue, and if I hear one more joke about Kaboose, I'm gonna cut someone.

This. This sad, pathetic excuse for a fucking game.

Sonic Unleashed made up for it though.
Something is very wrong with you. Very, very wrong.

We could have done without Sonic 06 and all Sonic games after it. (Except maybe Sonic Rush.)

Also Ratchet and Clank Size matters.
But then there wouldn't be awesome games like Sonic Colors!

Trust me. It's not as shitty as previous titles.

Don't believe me? Play it yourself.

This but Sonic Unleashed did NOT make up for it. In many, several in fact, ways it was considerably WORSE.

At least Sonic 2006 had an intruiging betrayl story arch between Shad' and the robot.
How was it worse? Please, do tell.

Way too many games on this list that are very popular and enjoyable, that some people just hold a grudge against. And it's too bad, because a game you don't like not existing isn't going to help you in any way. No ones forcing you to play it. So in an attempt to be more reasonable, I am going to say Too Human. Why? Well, because from what I remember, Too Human was the game that prevented us from getting a sequel to Eternal Darkness. Who out there is going to say that they would prefer Too Human over a sequel to such a classic horror game?

Well since you asked nicely, alrighty.

Firstly I felt that Sonic 06' actually had something of a strength in its initial premise. It took a few steps back, looked at the series and said 'okay, what if we throw out what we know, and go as if a lot of this was new'? As a result we got an entirely new world, a new eggman design, and several new mechanics.
Admittedly they didn't pan out very well (GOD those Non-Stop Run zones drove me insane) but it was an attempt.

Sonic Unleashed certainly tried adding new things, but they are things that don't even seem good in concept. Sonic is now a Werewolf, okay, already we're starting off with a facepalm here. Adding to that the melee sections, which for anyone who's played them feels gratuitious, and the new mechanic goes out the window. Aside from that main element the other mechanic (find enough coins/rings to start a stage) is just arbitrary padding and not pleasant at all.

Also I have to admit. While 06' went on a very basic premise (Eggman attacked) and grew into something more involving, Unleashes just started off in a bad way. Eggman turns Sonic into a furry super monster for... no real reason... and then releases him again onto earth! Why? So he can release some super-demon that we already know is going to turn around and bite him in the ass anyway. And then that little pixie with the amnesia trope. Just... I couldn't get my head around the number of bad deicisions that came into it.

The way I see it, both are BAD games. However 06' was bad because of execution alone, there wasn't all that much wrong with the premise of what they wanted to do.
Unleashed though, was as bad on paper as it was in play. That is why I see it as worse.

Force Unleashed 2. The first one was far from prefect and completely unnecessary but at least it had closure and, seemed to have been self-contained. There was no need to make a sequel but then...there it was. I still haven't played FU2 except for a demo and would like to continue living in denial that this game was ever made.

Don't worry man, the demo IS the game.

Words from the master. All games have their place, but when it's just for the money? Yuck...

Plus, I wish Star Wars: Republic Commando had never been made. Nice team tactics, good gameplay, nice cliffhanger-ish ending. THEN NO SEQUEL! Eternal sadness...
Look.. like Twilight, I don't like alot of these games. But enough people do and that's obvious.

There is nothing wrong with Twilight existing, not every movie needs to be a moving artitic masterpiece.

Likewise, not every game needs to be an incredibly work of art.

Games, movies, TV, books.. these are all entertainment.. they can also be moving, challanging, horrifying, and all the other things a work of art can be.. but they don't have to be.

Its okay for things to be just mindless fun.
I don't have anything wrong with just mindless fun either, not every game has to be a masterpiece containing narrative and emotionally adept characters. Hell, there's nothing wrong with bad games existing either, as long the devs at least tried to make something unique. The games that I'm talking about are the ones that are just corporate-designed gruel with nothing special about them at all, made to be bought but not enjoyed. Not just because they're bad games, but because it makes it harder for people to get actually good games made when all the producers are drooling over Activision's giant pile of money and just says "make that happen". They're clogging up the industry with homogeneous sludge, and I like to think that if they had never existed we'd be seeing much better games out in existence today.
Like maybe "Mirrors Edge-Good Edition". something I'd like to see.

Cod...I hate it, plus, when you think about it, it's kind of for casual gamers, whenever I look at my friends' achievement list the only games I see are CoD and Fifa...They're not refined gamers who love the classics, they just love shooters and killing people.
Honestly, just think about it, I don't see CoD players playing anything else at all, no matter how good the game is, they're not REAL gamers.
:p
What does that make me? I have beat just about every COD, and played through Halo 1,2,3, and Reach (not a big fan of the game, but as huge as it is I wanted to see if they improved what I didn't like in each one). I also have nearly 100% Mass Effect 1 and 2, Fallout 3, Oblivion, and have over 120 games in my collection from nearly every genre?

Moral of the story: blanket assumptions are bad.
I was saying about the ones who only play CoD mate :)

I'm going to jump on the "Treyarch" band-wagon for this discussion, because I truly believe that the only thing wrong with the CoD series is that Treyarch became involved and transformed the series into a giant cash-cow milking. Not to mention most of their games sucked, as CoD 3 and WaW were merely carbon copies of Infinity Ward's previous titles, with WaW being far less balanced/enjoyable than CoD4. Black Ops I guess is okay by comparison to Treyarch's previous titles, but by this point the CoD series has become so bland and overdone that Black Ops needed to do a lot more than add another zombie minigame and cut down MW2's online multiplayer to be anything other than just another boring cover-based shooter that the industry has been bogged down with in recent times.

EDIT: Argh, hit post too soon. Anyway, think about what the CoD series would've been like without Treyarch. We would've had CoD 1 and 2, then 3 would've been Modern Warfare 1, and 4 would've been Modern Warfare 2. The games would've been fewer and more spaced apart, meaning the series would've ended up far less tiring.

I think we could've nixed a few Dynasty Warriors game. A few were good. Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires was good and should be kept. But most need to go.

No problem my friend! I just think it's unfair for people who only ever play CoD, to be the ones who have made it apparently the greatest game ever and unfortunately the best selling, when it's just so casual, in my eyes...
Don't flame me!

And I LOVED this game... But what's done is done.
At the time I didn't have a gaming rig (a year ago) I used to go back to this and its expansion (that wasn't just 15$ for a multi-map!) when I wanted to have a good shooter experience.

Final Fantasy 12, 13, The Last Remnant, Infinite "not-a-real-word" Undiscovery. These titles have caused a decline in my love for Japanese games, and they have polluted me against a lot of ones that aren't so bad. Seriously, the only Japanese game I've bought recently was Dead Rising 2, and that was made by Canadians technically.

What is with the animosity to Fallout 3. I'm not going to derail this thread completely so whoever does it has to do it in twenty (four-letter being a word) words or less. I got into the series at 3 and thought it was fantastic. I picked up 1 and 2 and tactics, and I see the faint glitter of why the series is so popular, but honestly it's hidden under so much obtuseness I can't tolerate it some days.

Unacceptable answers and why:

It's not turn-based/Yeah turn-based in a massive sandbox... root canals are more fun.
Limited Dialogue options/You got full V/O out of the deal.
Charisma is now useless/It's still was pretty useless.

+To Fallout 3, I'm not one to petition graphics most days, but the retro-futurism needed 3D bad. You can hardly tell it's there in Fallout 1 if it weren't for the posters and ads and what not.

EDIT: The graphical comment doesn't hold any real sway. I realize 3D was infantile in 98, but I'm just saying. Fallout on a 360 is epic.

Arguably the first game to really use cover-based shooting as a core gameplay mechanic.

I'd have listed Shenmue on here for being the first to really use QTEs during a cutscene, but eh.

now that I got my smartass drive out of the way

I'd have to say, whatever game that got the FPS genre into the bullshit that it is now

you know something's wrong when a game based on shooting the fuck out of your enemies forces you to hide like a little ***** every 6 seconds

Sonic may have gotten horrible, but the game that introduced me to the disgustingly horrible games industry was Frogger: The Great Quest for the PS2. There was an awesome Frogger top-down 2.5D grid-based platformer for the PS1 (it plays way better than it sounds), and I had my hopes up. What did I get in return? A horrible plot, a bunch of puns so horrible that I didn't even like them as a kid, and gameplay that involved either spitting at your enemies or using "frog-fu" on them, the primary difference between the two being that spitting was ranged (they even used the same button). All of this made so much worse by the cheese grater they hired as the protagonist's voice actor, who spouts out pathetic one-liners at every opportunity. It's like Nathan Drake if you take away every single redeeming quality and amplify every horrible quality ten-thousand fold. The gameplay was horrible, I had no clue where to go for some time, the small bit of replay value was ruined by the fact that you had to start an entirely new game to get anything you missed, and if I wasn't mistaken, there was a game-breaking glitch on level 2 (either that or they didn't give you any hint at all where to go after defeating the enemies). The game /literally/ made me sick. I despise its every fiber of existence, and if I find the game again, I'll smash it into pieces and send it to the dump so nobody else has to suffer through five minutes of play.
