Gaming mouse, are they worth it?

If you really want to, go ahead. I use a dinky little wireless Microsoft mouse, and it works fine for me.

I use an MX Revelution. I can honestly say, that I could not live without it. If it broke, I would hae to get a new one. It is that good.
This is what I have as well, and I love it. Its not really a matter of it being a "gaming" mouse that makes me like it so much though. Its just really high quality. The best feature it has for gaming imo is being able to switch between smooth and click-by-click mouse wheel.

I can confirm that this mouse is great. If you can find it, though, I really prefer the MX700, it the same thing, just wireless. I can't tell the difference between using the 700 or 518 in terms of responsiveness, and I just like the extra weight of the batteries.

I got mine for free, for some reason my dad's work has all these old computers, but somebody thought they all needed gaming mice for ALL OF THEM. Somebody had just got a G5, and asked around if anyone needed his old mouse.

I got a Razer Death Adder as a gift for my birthday, I don't think I could spare the cash to buy any decent mouse myself, but I definitely like having it. It makes a slight difference in FPS games (Which I play a bit too often). I would say, a gaming mouse is well worth the money under a few circumstances. The first being that you can find one cheap, and/or can afford it. The second being if you 'game' often enough to put it to use. If you're like my mom and asking if you need a better mouse when all you do is check your e-mail, then no, you don't need one. As for my mother, if you ever read this, your mouse is perfectly functional and unless it breaks YOU of all people don't need a new one.

It's a Logitech MX518. It fits my hand comfortably, is extremely precise, has two extra programable buttons by my thumb, and another two for instant switching between high & low sensitivity (even in-game). I would highly reccomend it if you want to get a better edge while gaming (also works nice for anything else).

What're the benefits of a 'gaming mouse' compared to... say, a regular logitech optical mouse?

I can give you my 100% guarantee that a gaming mouse is not worth it, especially if you are buying for extra buttons, none of which you will use. My teacher told me he talked to a Logitech rep. once who told him the gaming mouses are pretty much just cool to look at, but otherwise no better than a regular mouse.

I think of a gaming mouse as something above 1000 DPI, and has some sort of customization beyond what the OS will give you regularly (through hardware or software) And has more than the standard number of buttons. They would be designed for extensive/intensive use.

To LivinginSterio, while a lot of the time a regular mouse would suffice, compared to all the others I've used, my MX700 is just so much more responsive and durable that I really would not use anything less. My old mouse couldn't track a lot of my movements when I was playing a game accurately, I play on fairly low sensitivities, so when i would swing my mouse to turn quickly, my old mouse couldn't keep up with the speed I was moving my hand at. If I played on a high sensitivity, I couldn't line up a shot, because the mouse wasn't able to track small movements.

That's the exact mouse I have. Absolutely love it; fits my hand perfectly

I use a Microsoft Laser Mouse 6000 (yeah, that's the name -.-)

It works well for both gaming and other stuff, I don't feel a need to upgrade to something more fancy ^^

I think it is. I got a Razor Diamondback about 4 years ago and I still love it. I've used it more than any other accessory I have for my computer. The optics work on just about any surface, if you got a current model, you'd be hard pressed to find a non-responsive surface.

My mouse is an icy white, dual button, laser guided Microsoft mouse with red lighting accents and a fully rotational scrolly thing with specially designed finger grip manufactured for optimal performance.
In other words, this.

Yea, check out that bad boy :p

I can give you a 100% guarantee that I was better at FPS games after I got my 'gaming' mouse. Also, I wouldn't trust anything said 'reps' say, seeing as they're just there for marketing purposes.

I personally use a 2nd Generation G5. It's a solid mouse. I used to have a 1st Generation G5 but the wire pooped out on me.
The G5 is a very classy mouse. I like it very much for non-gaming, too: it is shaped well for an easy grip, has a good texture, you can add weight to stabilize it, it has what I consider the right amount of extra buttons (two on the thumb -- great for web-browsing), and the dpi switcher is occasionally useful (more so for art than for games).

I think their gaming keyboards are getting pretty ridiculous, though. All kinds of pointless junk. Especially the little display screens. I just bought a high-end non-gaming keyboard and it's way nicer.

I got my Razer Diamondback several years ago, when 800DPI mice were still the norm and the difference blew my mind. Years later, I still love this mouse and would buy another one in a heartbeat. A top-of-the-line gaming mouse wouldn't be noticeably more precise than my old DB, and I've gotten so used to the feel of it that other mice just feel weird.

To the OP, "yes, but it depends". Precision wise, anything greater than 1600dpi is probably unnecessary; the most important factor is feel. Select a mouse that feels good, and you'll wind up loving it.

I use this one, and I don't plan to change it... ever

It's basically copy of Logitech's G-series, but it's great. I bought it for for 15$, its called A4tech X-710BK.
It has 6(SIX!!) dpi settings (100-2000dpi),button for triple click(or whatever you want) and two side-buttons.
Did I mention that it has its own internal memory, so you can make your own scripts and macros?
If you plan on trying gaming mouses(mice xD) this is must-have. I will repeat - 15$
