Is it just me, or do people who play video games have no respect for really good games anymore? I spoke to a friend the other day who told me that he only ever plays Call of Duty. He also said Portal 2 was "rubbish" and had never heard of Shadow of the Colossus. I know several other people who claim to be gamers, but never play anything other than COD, FIFA and Skyrim. Don't get me wrong, I think Skyrim is an amazing game (the other two...not so much), but...

Is this just a bad experience, or have classic games vanished from the sight of modern gaming?

I dunno, the people I hang around with are usually the opposite. They actually look DOWN on me for playing CoD (single player, I don't dabble in MP), and I consider myself to be a really retro gamer. I still look back fondly on my ZX Spectrum.

I think you have a broader perspective of what a game can be.

I rememeber playing some geeky game, when a friend came over to visit. I don't remember exactly which game, it could have been Capitalism or Eve Online. It was probably something with a lot of numbers on the screen.

My friend asked me what I was doing, and I said I was playing a game. He said "How are you playing a game? That is just a bunch of numbers." He didn't understand that numbers can be a game. He expected a racing game or something about killing aliens.

I think when we encounter a new concept we need to get used to it, before we can enjoy it. Unfortunately at the moment the industry seems too timid to introduce new gameplay concepts, resulting in a narrow playing field. Classic games did have more width, more types of gameplay.

Why? Because Fifa and CoD are just a slightly better version released every year, whereas TES is a slightly worse version released every 5 years?

I too thought Portal 2 was boring.

Because CoD is cool . It's like the jocks of highschool .Popular . And the people that don't like CoD( just like those that don't like the jocks) are treated like outcasts, and any other game genre ( just like every other social group in highschool) are less important To each their own i guess , i just stop caring what other people like or what other people think after highschool . If people want to spend their hard earned cash and time on that , good for them , but i like my games with a little more depth .

I see it the other way around. Hating CoD is what's cool.

It's just a bad experience on your part. Stop hanging around with philistines, perhaps. I would be repulsed by the people you call "friends". They are a disgrace to anyone who appreciates gaming, the sort of muppets who play games because they are popular and cool, not for actual enjoyment.

Depends, i'll take my jock example again, but this time with nerd/jock cliche . Jocks are cool , everyone likes jocks , nerds are uncool , everyone ignores nerd . Jocks make fun for nerds . Nerds hate jocks. It's definately cool to hate jocks when your part of the nerd crowd .

Lets apply that to CoD shall we? CoD is very popular , everyone and their mother knows what CoD is , and It's popular . For those that don't like CoD ( like most people in this comunity on the escapist ,it definatly is cool to hate on CoD. Depends what comunity you side with .

I think this is the first time in my 31-year existence I've been implied to side with the jocks. :p

I think if you looked at the sales figures, they would look something like this

In the 80s:
Jocks spend nothing on video games
Nerds spend $2 squillion on real games

Now:
Jocks spend $20 squillion on COD and FIFA
Nerds spend $3 squillion on real games

If you simply ignore COD and FIFA, real games are doing quite well.

No. We will not restart this dumb fuck trend of "to be a real gamer you have to have played X, Y & Z"
That is just stupid. And Good is very, very subjective.
Oh and for the record. I have Shadow of the Colossus. Its shit. Anyone who classifies it as a good game, to put it nicely, can stay the hell away from me.

CoD and FIFA are real games this your point is invalid.

That said, I don't enjoy certain classics. Like Kasurami wrote, the more accessible games will appeal to some to the same degree we are attracted to the more complex games. Just reward those developers who make games that appeal to your tastes to help reinforce your niche.

People like different things.

Live and let live I always say. Or at least I used to, before I killed all those people.

I spoke to someone one time who thought the Transformers series was fantastic, and that The Big Lebowski and Goodfellas were awful. He wasn't wrong, he wasn't an idiot, he wasn't against my preferences and I wasn't against his - he simply had a different outlook on movies and what I enjoyed was typically different from what he did.

As a medium broadens its audience (and no medium has broadened like gaming this generation) you're going to get those who go to the accessible games - the Halo, the Call of Duty, the myriad of iOS, Facebook and Android games - and you're going to have those who have a deeper attachment to the medium who play the more complex games, just like you're going to have the people who have a deeper attachment to film and seek out the independent, arthouse stuff.

It's not an us-or-them situation. That's like saying there can only be the Coen Brothers or there can only be Michael Bay.
THIS!

I know people who won't watch any movie from 20 years ago because what they care about (big explosions, somewhat believable CGI, cutting-edge HD picture) is serviced fine by what is being made now.

On the other hand, there are people like Moviebob who have put the movies of yesteryear on a pedestal, and rarely think that recent films match up (look at the shellacking he gave to The Artist , which most people seem to think is pretty damn good).

The majority of people will be satisfied with modern media, occasionally dipping back into older things that suit their tastes (I imagine that the OP's friends would like the original Doom or Duke Nukem ), just like there will be people who love older things and disparage the 'crap' that is being made today.

I think you misunderstood me.

I am not saying that CoD and Fifa are bad games and anyone who says otherwise is wrong. I am saying that CoD and Fifa simply do not appeal to me. I like games with depth and, to me at least, depth is not one of the strong points of the aforementioned CoD and Fifa. I can understand why people like them. It's just that I don't.

Most gamers have absolutely know idea about the gaming industry. You can't blame them any more than you can blame a person who can read for not knowing the full history of western literature.

I'm sorry sir but your answer is too well-mannered, and makes too much sense, and is not elitist.

Please fix it.

Whew, sorry, just trying to keep up images for all the "Hardcore"(seriously?) gamers out here. I actually agree completely.

Just let people enjoy what they want to enjoy and don't condemn anyone for having fun (Unless they're harming others). Variety is the spice of life, etc.

Oh well.

EDIT: For grammar errors and to add:
