What's you worst case where a retailer tried to rip you off?
Mine would be at game crazy. You know those scams where Gamestop keeps trying to shove the Edge card down your throat? You know how they keep badgering you about it and hope you give in?
Game Cray has a similar program. The biggest difference is that they didn't bother asking me. They just signed me up anyway.

They never bothered me about them before. Probably because I have a pseudo crazy/murderous glare on my face whenever I visit a Gamestop.

Well I never go to EB or any chain stores to get games, all they try to do is rip people off.
Some little kid was in there once when I was unfortunately in there with a friend, and he was trying to trade in about 5 N64 games and his n64 for some new Xbox or something or other game.
They offered 2 dollars each for the 64 games and get this - a dollar for his 64 console, 4 controllers and cables. 1 dollar.
I told the kid to sell his stuff on ebay or craigslist and he'd at least get $50. Some of the games he had still go for like $30 dollars or more. It was outrageous I almost punched the EB clerks face when he tried to convince the kid I was lying.

On a personal experience, I was once at a local used game store who has some good deals and bad deals, and I was looking for Jedi Outcast for the GC. They were selling it for $45, in a case that was cracked, with no instruction manual, and it was "discounted" because there was a "minor crack" in the disc. The disc was visibly cracked from the center all the way to the edge. You could easily see it with the naked eye. I asked the clerk if he was actually serious and he assured me that "all games were tested" and "once I bought it if it didn't work I could trade it for store credit".
Or how about I don't buy a broken game for about double what it's worth?

I got ripped off my an online gaming retailer. You buy ONE game from them & the next thing you know, they're taking $20 from you every month. On top of that, I stopped buying games from them because me & about 25 other people in their support forums can't force the game installers to actually install.

The Edge card thing at my GameStop is helpful for me. My most recent subscription cost was -$3. Due to it giving a bonus on trade ins and discount on used games, it made me money on my first go.
It would be annoying them pressing on you time after time though.

The biggest rip-off is with PC games. You pretty much CAN'T return them unless the disc itself is dead.

Careful using the edge card those really are scams.

most people i've seen on here complaining about being "ripped off" is just a company trying to make some extra money and the person behind the counter earning a bit more money for himself as well. since the object of any business is to make more money, trying to sell you something they make a lot of money off of isn't a rip off, it's just good business sense

The Gamestop here in town is ran by my oldest friend of some 25 years. He's a good guy and he hires good people. I appreciate that the business itself is like a scammy pawn shop but it's a pretty nice establishment we have here.

I don't really have problems with my local Gamestop since they are nice people. Although one time I tried to sell a game their and only got 20kr for it, but at GAME I got 100kr for it. But it was a long time ago and now GAME is no more! (The store in my city that is)

I've never had my local EB jerk me around, they all tend to be nice and even help people find good deals and refuse M-Rated games intended for minors.

Last week I went in to a Wal Mart (ugh...) and they were charging nearly NINTY dollars for the latest releases. Borderlands is good, but I shouldn't have to take a second mortgage to afford it!

back in 2005 I saw a PS2 game "ashes cricket '06"(or something along those lines) on the shelves for pre order and the asking price was $200AUD. I kid you not $200AUD.

That sir, is ridiculous. The Wal-Mart I go to has games for I want to say $59.94 for new releases. You'd think Wal-Mart would have a standardized rate for these things seeing as how $60 is like " The Price " for new releases.

Slackers sells new games, but not really, they open the game case up and put all the game discs in a giant binder. Seriously they might muck up a disc.

At least they sell old consoles.

You don't know the half of it. Not only do I hate that people think four cents is a significant enough drop in price to buy from a company that undercuts its suppliers, they also grossly overprice many things in my local outlet.

They also are trying to shift Call of Duty 4 for the low, low price of SEVENTY Canadian, Guitar Hero: World Tour for nearly TWO-FUCKING-HUNDRED, and the Bioshock/Oblivion combo for (sit down for this one) ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY DOLLARS.

I went straight up to the manager and asked what the hell was going on, and he said that he was told by the Head Office to put those prices. But the way he said it, he was basically saying "We here at Wal Mart know you idiots are willing to shell out exorbitant fees for these little toys, and are too stupid to walk East for three Goddamn minutes to get to EB Games.".

He really needs a kick in the teeth.

I hate it when stores do that with any optical media. I'm buying new because I want the guarantee that no clumsy idiot put scratches in the disc, and I'm not paying full price for a package that's already been opened.

It would have cost me money had I not gotten the card. I don't read the Game Informer, though. I am using them to make a collection in case I need something to burn for heat after global warming causes a new ice age.
I would shop elsewhere if I could, but the only other place that sells games around my town is Wal*Mart.

Maybe not in your country you can't but over here in Scotland I can buy a game take it home unwrap it, run it on my PC and then return it within 30 days for a full no quibble refund provided I have the original case, instructions and the product is in resellable condition, i.e not damaged in anyway and as long as I have the receipt. One good thing about the UK is the consumer protection laws are very specific and in fact render EULAs as nothing more than something to be clicked through to get to the install.

Saying that the local Game store here sticks a sticker on all it's products that says that the game can only be returned if the sticker is still there, hoo boy I would love to see the sales assistant stupid enough to refuse my refund because I had removed that sticker.

As for all the other stuff, needless bitching about companies that are, basically, there to make profit. They don;t force you to buy their product so you don't have to.

I went straight up to the manager and asked what the hell was going on, and he said that he was told by the Head Office to put those prices. For taking advantage of the lazy and stupid? Really you serious? If you're to lazy or too stupid to take a 3 minute walk to a store that is selling the same product for a fraction of the price then really you aren't smart enough to be allowed to spend money at all. The guy doesn't deserve a kick in the teeth he deserves a damn good hand shake. We live in a world were people are getting more lazy and more stupid and these people deserve to get the piss taken out of them at every opportunity. Can I get that manager's name, I want to buy him a beer.

I hate it when stores do that with any optical media. I'm buying new because I want the guarantee that no clumsy idiot put scratches in the disc, and I'm not paying full price for a package that's already been opened.
Been down this road before and my opinion of people who think this is the same now as when the topic cropped up two or three months ago. Get a grip if the disc works who cares if the packaging was opened or not it's a disc not a god damn car. And don't use the 'it's the principle of the thing' argument because THAT principle is as retarded as the people who think it IS a principle.

What they care about, is actually having stock to sell rather than having stock to be stolen. Besides, I've never had a problem taking back a disc that wasn't working properly so long as I've kept the reciept and most clever people check the disc straight away. You can always ask to check for scratches etc before taking the game home. It's really that simple.

OT: My partner has never complained about being ripped off before. He usually checks prices before buying and then calls the most expensive retailers rip-offs then.

EDIT: It's technically new until it's used.

My friend bought a game in 2003 before they improved security and opened it up to find someone had stolen the disc, he paid about $20 for an empty case.
