Look I got the whole gaymer con thing, but making being gay one of the qualifications in a sporting event?
Imagine the scandals: Five time swimming champion admits bisexual tendencies, hetero fling while training.

Once again, a thread on this forum that displays exactly WHY gays feel the need to "segregate" themselves from other folks.

Stay classy, Escapist posters.
How are the Negro Leagues doing this year?

Again. This is exactly why they want their own Olympics. They were outcasts from society from the beginning. Certainly, things are slowly changing, but after being dismissed from general society for so long, it's little wonder why they'd want to separate themselves.

What else, really? Should they be grateful because society doesn't openly hate them anymore? Better late than never?
So their response to no longer being outcasts, is to make themselves outcasts?
Read the thread, learn about the event, and you'd realise it's actually open to heterosexuals too.

Captcha: that's enough. Damn straight it is, Captcha.

"No longer being outcast" is a fairly arguable statement. Less, certainly, but it's too early claim that there are no homophobia or sexuality-related hate crime now, ever, and everything is fixed and dandy. It still happens, and in many places, it's still considered an acceptable norm.
And honestly, I imagine another incintament to create own LGBT communities and establishment is this very undercurrent of "We don't openly hate them homoes anymore, they damn well appreciate it!" from the ivory towers.

Furthermore, they're just holding their own sports competition, with a slight but not exclusive theme. I don't see how it's somehow turning them into ingrate social outcasts. They're not creating some form of isolated state unified beneath the Rainbow, they're just holding a sports tournament. That is all.

EDIT: And let's not forget that there is no unified LGBT hive mind or psi-collective. The whole integration with society question is a knotty one, and different people have different ideas about that. Some feel that it's self-segregation and as such pointless and contra-productive. Others feel it's the only way to truly be free, to create your own community where the regular one failed you. Others still probably don't care much either way.

If the gay olympics, in no way shape or form, involves skinny jeans or dudes kissing dudes with -amazing- hair...I will just be sorrily disappointed.

Huh looking over their FAQ it looks like the Gay Olympics are much closer to what the actual Olympics should be than the Olympics. That is more amateur athletes than professional and representing cities instead of countries.

I personally don't care about Olympics events, no matter who or what is being represented doing what sport in wherever the games are being held. If the world stopped the "real" Olympic games, I couldn't care less.

That out of the way, you guys need to understand why so many homosexuals would want this. Imagine that you're performing some sport in front of people all over the world, mostly from countries that want you dead, in jail, or punished in some form for who you fancy. Outside of the first world, homosexuality can land you anything from a steep fine to death; even in the first world you can still be killed or discriminated for being gay. Although as a gay guy I want the gay community to meld with greater society, it's hard not to understand why homosexuals go for things like this; aside from the fact that sports tend to be very homophobic, just look at the comments here.

Then why call it Gay Olympics in the first place? Just musing.
They're called the Gay Games because they're primarily about the acceptance of alternative sexualities, with the majority of the entrants being gay. I would have thought that were obvious. It is possible to have an event focused on one demographic without denying entrance to others, you know.

Because homosexuality is the only alternative sexuality. This shit is false advertising.

That's retarded. Because being gay is not a disability. That doesn't make sense.
Aaaaand now I've just read it's called that becauase it's about accepting people as gay.

SHOULDN'T THE NORMAL OYLMPICS BE DOING THAT? Because y'know, discrimination being illigal isn't it?

Well, actually I kind of added the "alternative sexuality" thing myself. It does primarily seem to be about people who are gay and lesbians, but it's also noted that "Anyone can participate, regardless of ability, age, sexual orientation, race, gender, nationality, political or religious beliefs, ethnic origins, or HIV status." So yeah, first and foremost gays, but also about anyone competing equally which preumably includes other sexualities. No one's falsely advertised anything, except for me since I've just misread the information on the FAQ there.

I would assume the Olympic Games are about the Olympic Games, not sex or race. Are the Olympics really that bigotted?

Why not Stephen Fry? I suppose he's not that athletic really. I expect Neil Patrick Harris could manage a fair turn of speed, though.

Not in most parts of the world. When the Olympics are held in Dubai or some other wealthy city outside of the West and a few parts of Asia, homosexual athletes had to keep themselves in the collective closets so they won't get arrested or lynched. Being gay is illegal and definitely looked down on in most parts of the world, and people have to abide by these laws whenever they visit for whatever reason. Even then, gays are still discriminated against in many parts of the USA and UK. Although I disagree with the entire notion of Gay Olympics, I can understand why they'd want their own games.

That would just be Olympics Starring People Who Are Gay. The Gay Olympics needs some serious flamboyancy. I mean, by all means have Stephen Fry as a commentator and we could have Neil Patrick Harris handling the medal ceremonies, but when you call something the Gay Olympics, it had BETTER have an excellent performance. With a musical number. You wanna call yourself the Gay Olympics, but then not offer any 'gay' sports, and then let straight people in, you need to reclaim your gay points on the opening.

OT: I must admit, it would be fun to have an Olympics that's all about being really happy and joyful.
That's a parallel universe where Arnold Schwarzenegger pulled a Michael Jackson and got a sex change for some bizarre reason > >

Idk, maybe because sports tend towards being full of homophobic pricks, at least here in the UK.
