GCSEs...

I took my GCSEs two years ago now and it feels like forever! I got mostly C's, a B in Citizenship and a D in Geography.

They were built up to be so important, but the only thing they did was get me into college and sixth form. College and sixth form got me no-where because A-Levels are no more valued than GCSEs these days. Hell, looking back my 5 Cs don't count for anything, I got an apprenticeship with the council and they took me on my word!

Ugh - that really annoys me. What people who write/believe those articles don't understand is that the world has changed since they took their exams, and the exam system changes with it. Also, like the A Level system has proven - if the exams are too easy, make a new grade

im just done with my first year of uni. for you mate i would definitely recommend going to uni. a) you spend 3 years pissed and having sex, b) you meet some of the best people you will ever meet, and c) anyone who says a degree doesn't put you ahead of your peers has clearly never been in charge of anything.

and relax, seriously, GCSEs are more a indicator of how well you are expected to do in the future, you won't be expected to list which ones you got or how good they were unless they are as far as you got in education. if your smart, and you study hard, they will just be another grade to rattle off to a employer in a few years. A levels are the first big ones.

Still that doesn't make them any less important for you now, so good luck mate, all the best tommorow (or today...)

So...the wait is finally coming to an end. In about 8 hours GCSE results for UK students will come out, and I for one am very worried. We've been working towards this for about 3 years, and it is a pretty big milestone.

Personally, I probably shouldn't be worried, because I've been fairly lucky with my education and I feel I performed well, but that doesn't stop me from bricking myself right now...

So Escapists - are any of you in a similar position, and if there are any others who took them last year, how did you find it?

I did absolutely fuck all work towards them, got full As and A*s across the board, and my teachers told me that they were sure I must have done some extra work (because, like I said, I did fuck all in class). I laughed and said no, and they were all there, just standing dumbstruck. Yeah, GCSEs were piss easy.

In my opinion they count for the last 3 years of my life It's more a personal struggle than an employment/uni based one

relax mate, a) you;ve done them... so theres nothing you can do anyway now... and b) if you've worked for them (and you sound fairly bright anyway) you won't be getting bad grades :-D

See, I'm actually toying with the idea of Uni. There's nothing academic I want to study for three years, and I wouldn't apply to something just for the pissups and 99%-failure-to-get-any parties, but I don't wanna miss out on the whole experience, you know? I'm thinking of going to a music performance or drama college, since that's what I do, but I'm not sure, and I'm not sure what grades I'd need to get in. I'm doing a 2 year BTEC after dropping all my subjects (I did fine on the practical in music, for example, but the written fucked me over on the day), and while some people say it's the equivalent to 3 A levels (in theory, it should be), other people say it's looked down on. It really bugs me...

Its not that they don't matter, but just so long as you get into A-levels you're fine.

i can't get this across storngly enough, as im just a text block on your pc screen, but i would urge anyone, absoloutely anyone who has the oppurtunity to go to uni; go. don't have any doubts absoloutely the best decision i ever made.

aside from the terrific social side and horrific fiscal side of it, theres the fact a degree rates higher than any other qualification to a employer, fact. they say post grads are struggling to find work nowadays? they're not. its just not as easy as its always been.

besides which, when you are 40 looking back if you haven't been to uni i can guarentee you will regret it.

For what it's worth, I was predicted great stuff at the start of secondary school - like, Oxford sort of deal - but completely tanked in my GCSEs as a result of sheer laziness (A in French, five Cs and a few others), then jacked in A Levels after a year (before AS was invented) because I couldn't be arsed any more, but I'm now at university and just about to start the final year of my degree.

Of course I'm not suggesting it's a good idea to go that route... just trying to demonstrate that it's not the end of the world if it doesn't go to plan. I wouldn't be so flippant as to say GCSEs are meaningless but, to be honest, you'll probably never be asked about them after A Level and you'll certainly never be asked about them if you go on to get a degree.

For everyone who has no idea what you are talking about you should mention what GCSE's are.

OT: I live in Canada, but we have Provincial exams which are the same thing. They are a waste of time though.

Don't worry. GCSE's are worth fuck all and have no standing on the rest of your life.

Only 2 GCSE's actually matter and that's Maths and English Language. Science matters too if you want to do a science subject at uni. Other than that, the rest of the GCSE's arn't worth diddly.

A-Levels will get you your tariff points to get in to Uni, so don't worry about it.

My Brother just got his GCSE's, got C's in everything....which is actually amazing considering he was in school for less than a quarter the year due to his illnesses...We're rather proud
