To be honest I think Gearbox overrates itself to an extent. They DID come up with a cool game that will probably have a successful sequel, but overall it's not a very imitatable property that is going to see a lot of successful spin offs. I think they are blind to their own failings, which includes the simple fact that they didn't really manage to capture the RPG player market due to the game being too simplified and shooter oriented. What they managed to do was create an "also ran" Shooter Franchise, capturing some of the spillover from the big shooter titles. Those observing things would rather try and imitate the major successes, rather than the skag picking at their leavings (so to speak).
If I was them I'd bee viewing the lack of imitation as a sign of their standing, and not make such arrogrant predictions.
Please note I am not saying Borderlands sucks by any stretch of the imagination, just that despite what the numbers look like, it's not a title where this should be inviting declarations of shock.
For the shooter/RPG hybrid, I think more people would be interested in trying to knock off things like Bethesda's take on "Fallout", which did manage to pull from both audiences. Of course that franchise is teteering on a brink from having become a little too shooter-centric (which was Borderland's major problems), and also the simple fact that it's not easy to imitate as it's been built off of Betehsda's own engines which they put a lot of time and effort into. Chances are without games like "Oblivion" that developed the basic tools in a safer envioment, we never would have seen this happen. The only ones who really engines like that are Bethesda (and it's very buggy), and not many companies are exactly roaring at the bit to try and knock off something that monolithic on the chance of a successful franchise.
Speaking for myself, I think those who have an interest in trying to compete for an RPG/Shooter hybrid might want to spend more time looking at the indie market. What the guys who did "EYE: Divine Cybermancy" could probably produce with the resources of some of these other titles would probably be the holy grail for those looking for a real-time, first person, action-RPG. It suffered from it's cobbled engine and production budget though.
Who knows, If Borderlands 2 is that huge a success and innovates signifigantly in the RPG direction from the first game, perhaps Gearbox will get it's imitators.
Personally I will be laughing really hard if we do see a lot Borderlands knock offs and Gearbox cries after this though. It would be ironic to the extreme.
