I think we can all agree Borderlands is far from being a unique game.
Furthermore, the game really doesn't have much going for it since all in all you fight the same few enemies in slightly different desert landscapes with a million guns that all do the same set of things with different damage and elements. Every quest in the game is a fetch quest mimicking the last and the stories attached to them come in a wall of text which is unacceptable these days.
Really? I certainly haven't played any games that gave me a Borderlands vibe lately.

Considering that Borderlands is Diablo with guns, I'd say there's not a lot original to rip off.
What, besides its distinctive visual style, clever writing and wickedly dark sense of humor?
What game are you talking about? Not Borderlands or Diablo obviously.

Something about this makes me think of when Cliff Bleszinski went around saying Gears 3 should've been rated higher than Gears 2 when it was released...little self-indulgent.

To be honest I think Gearbox overrates itself to an extent. They DID come up with a cool game that will probably have a successful sequel, but overall it's not a very imitatable property that is going to see a lot of successful spin offs. I think they are blind to their own failings, which includes the simple fact that they didn't really manage to capture the RPG player market due to the game being too simplified and shooter oriented. What they managed to do was create an "also ran" Shooter Franchise, capturing some of the spillover from the big shooter titles. Those observing things would rather try and imitate the major successes, rather than the skag picking at their leavings (so to speak).

If I was them I'd bee viewing the lack of imitation as a sign of their standing, and not make such arrogrant predictions.

Please note I am not saying Borderlands sucks by any stretch of the imagination, just that despite what the numbers look like, it's not a title where this should be inviting declarations of shock.

For the shooter/RPG hybrid, I think more people would be interested in trying to knock off things like Bethesda's take on "Fallout", which did manage to pull from both audiences. Of course that franchise is teteering on a brink from having become a little too shooter-centric (which was Borderland's major problems), and also the simple fact that it's not easy to imitate as it's been built off of Betehsda's own engines which they put a lot of time and effort into. Chances are without games like "Oblivion" that developed the basic tools in a safer envioment, we never would have seen this happen. The only ones who really engines like that are Bethesda (and it's very buggy), and not many companies are exactly roaring at the bit to try and knock off something that monolithic on the chance of a successful franchise.

Speaking for myself, I think those who have an interest in trying to compete for an RPG/Shooter hybrid might want to spend more time looking at the indie market. What the guys who did "EYE: Divine Cybermancy" could probably produce with the resources of some of these other titles would probably be the holy grail for those looking for a real-time, first person, action-RPG. It suffered from it's cobbled engine and production budget though.

Who knows, If Borderlands 2 is that huge a success and innovates signifigantly in the RPG direction from the first game, perhaps Gearbox will get it's imitators.

Personally I will be laughing really hard if we do see a lot Borderlands knock offs and Gearbox cries after this though. It would be ironic to the extreme. :)

It might be because Borderlands is the sum of the following parts:

1 Part Fallout 2
2 Parts Baldur's Gate
1 Part Unreal Tournament
1 Part World of Warcraft
I'd say it's more like

5 parts absolute 100% shit game.

Honestly. I've played some BAD games, but Borderlands takes the cake. Nothing compares, not even ET.

I like shooters. I like RPGs. I like cel-shading. I HATE Borderlands. I'm ashamed I bought it.

I got the Hitman collection for $7 on the Steam sale. I havent played it at all, and I don't really care because it's just $7. But I spent nearly the same amount on Borderlands GOTY and honestly, I don't even think that game and all of its DLC combined are worth the $8 I spent.

It's the only game I've ever been so infuriated to have bought, and I'm glad people don't rip it off because the last thing this industry needs is more steaming piles of shit.

/rant. God damn.

Clever writing? you make me larf. the story was boring, dull with no interesting characters and arcs.

and humor? well i guess its true, it's has so much horrible mechanic and game design choices that it's actually funny.

OT: GEE I wonder why Gearbox /with massive sarcastic tone/.

I was tired when I posted this so I'll be a little more clear about what I mean here. I'd like to also note that my above complaints don't reflect my overall enjoyment of the game. I played it a lot when it came out and Borderlands 2 looks like a huge improvement from the first.

Borderlands does have a particular feel to it but at it's core it just adds up to a FPS MMO with some graphical polish and missing features. You don't really see games like it on consoles, that's for sure. But on PC? A Google search will leave you with at least a dozen results of games with the same core.
