The only thing that wears a little thin on me is when I'm talking to some of my really nerdy friends and they make ridiculously obscure references to things I know bugger all about, and find it weird that I don't get it. I apologise for not knowing all the ins and outs of Linux or for not knowing a minor quote from one episode of Bleach, but I wish they'd not think it abnormal that I am not as massive a nerd as them.

I can't stand console fanboy's, also people who play counter-strike or wow for 5 hours a day and then call you a nerd for playing games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Command and Conquer (not that im offended by being called a nerd, it's the fact they're TRYING to insult me)

RPG's, unless its an RPG-7 and its aimed at some enemy armour.

Also fanboys. Period. No game is perfect, never will be, get over it.

One for me has to be something that irriated me for a few years at my school. I'd be talking to a few of my "normal" friends in the morning and a friend of mine called Jake would come over out of the blue and start talking about his adventures the night before in Azaroth and the World of Warcraft. It was pritty fucking embarrasing, and I was good mates with usually so I couldn't really tell him to piss off.
My friend you have NO idea how many times that has cost me women in bars, I DONT CARE THAT YOUR WARLOCK OUT DPSed A WARRIOR, LET ME BLOODY PULL!!

I'm going to go straight ahead and assume that everyone reading this post is a geek (unless your lost on the way to porn or bebo). Oviously, there are plenty of hobbies and activitys that surround us nerds i.e. Comic Books, Video Games, RPGs ect. And theres also a lot of things that geeks do that issolate us from the normal people.

But anyway, what is main geeky thing you hate? What is the part of our culture that really gets under your skin?

One for me has to be something that irriated me for a few years at my school. Another thing that annoys the hell out of me is people correcting my gramma and spelling on forums. Im dislexic and often have to edit my post 3 or 4 times before they make them perfect so its pritty embarrasing when someone calls you out on it.
yeah i agree with you on the grammar monkeys. I`m a frenchy so my english is out the damned window

When people choose to ditch their friends for games. Maybe I'm being selfish because I personally don't too often get the chance to hang out with friends, and maybe they do, but seriously, you shouldn't pass up a once a week/month/year opportunity to do something you could just as easily do the day after.

I hate competitive gamers. I mean, the ones who get REALLY angry when they lose - those people most definitely need to be made fun of because they get so angry you'd think someone had slept with their spouse. Guys who talk about games a lot? There's a time and place for it (in geek circles) but not out in public.

I find internet culture (or, the dark underbelly of it) in general to be far more annoying though. Internet "jargon" in real conversations (i.e people talking like those horrible lolcat image captions) makes me rage :p

Oh man do I ever have a laundry list of this stuff.

Single-minded geeks: Just because I happen to enjoy a good game of DND every so often does not mean that I want to talk to you about it every time we run into eachother. There are other things in life.

Magic the Gathering: Admittedly it's more the people who I've known who play it. Namely a specific group of people at my old high school, all of whom had incredibly elitist attitudes and pretty much never showered.

Anime Fangirls: Yes I like anime, but I find it very difficult to get along with most anime fans, especially the girls. To them I have a few proclamations to make: Sephiroth is a fictional character, stop creaming yourself over him. No I do not want to read your FF Yaoi Fanfics. And finally, learning a few common Japanese words does not make you any more Japanese than the rest of us.

Ultra-Competitive Gamers: Basically people who get so absorbed in any game, be it video or tabletop, that they remove all elements of fun out of it. As was previously mentioned in this thread, I don't particularly care about every minor detail, I want to have FUN playing a GAME. Thank God I've got a sane group of people to play DND with.

LARP: God I don't even wanna touch this one with a 10-foot pole

Elitist nostalgia: Yes, the SNES and a good majority of its RPGs were awesome. However, automatically discrediting anything to come out since is completely stupid.

As a non english person, when people suddenly start to mix whole english sentences in their speech, while it isn't needed. This often happens in the rpg crowd, using sound bites from popular series or books.

btw...for the larp hater...I larp ;) But there are a lot of misunderstandings about larp folks. I guess larpers are the new DnD'ers when it comes to bad image.
Pshaw, I don't understand the stigma, I would LARP if I could, and if I knew the group I was LARPing with was into it for the reason I am (character acting and costumes, I loves me some character acting and costumes, and in a LARPing environment, I don't have to stand on a stage and freak out).

... I find cosplay to be a sad and depressing affair. I remember reading an online article about how some cosplayers are ruining American anime fandom, and 2 years later found out that the president of my college anime club was the cosplayer in question.
If there's a pastime associated with geek/nerd-dom that I actively dislike, it's cosplay.
Come to think of it, LARPing comes next, and for similar reasons.
But I've enjoyed Warhammer and Magic, many years ago, which appear to be nearly as reviled. So I wouldn't deny anyone their fun, no matter how sad and pathetic it looks to me.
Also, I am utterly bewildered by the extent to which many geeks have fetishized Japanese culture.

Pfft, then don't take your Level 34 Night Elf out on the pull, easy solution.

Manga/anime just fills me with molten hatred. I just find it repulsive.
Interesting, please elaborate, as it's rarely that I run into someone with that strong of an opinion about it.
The conventions of Japanese art leave a great deal to be desired, but I stop short at saying I'm repulsed by it. So your opinion interests me. (Feel free to PM me if you don't want to endure the slings and flames of fanboys.)

I seriously find it hilarious that people say they hate Anime and Manga... I mean there are what, 6-700 mangas or more, hundreds of animes... And you can't really say it's the style, every artist has his/her own style even if some elements can be similar. You might hate it because it's a cartoon and you think you're too old for such things. Just because you've seen and hated an episode of Pokemon/Yu-Gi-Oh/Other animated advertisement for toys etc. isn't really enough to completely hate an entire culture =P There are LOADS of animes with very interesting storylines. Not all series are intended for 7 year olds. Some say they got turned off by hentai, but hey, just ignore that stuff. It's just a product of a nation that is sexually frustrated like nothing else =P Only having censored live action porn can do that to people xD [/pro-anime rant]

I don't know if I hate anything that much... haven't had much contact with any geeks that aren't like me, JRPG/Manga/Anime fans that is. And I love discussing that at any occasion. I don't mind one bit what others think of that.

I'm really open minded though so it doesn't bother me if someone starts talking about their D&D/WH(40k)session or hardware specs, I just tell them that I have no clue about that stuff so their exploits/knowledge probably won't amaze me =P

Ah that sounds all too familiar. I was attempting to score once when one of my friends interrupted my conversation to enquire as to who's lightsaber style is the coolest in Star Wars. I nearly strangled him. I don't even know that much about Star Wars!

Seriously the japanese obsession. You pegged it that most are girls, and I hate to say that most of my nerdy girl friends are the annoying fangirl types. One goes as far as to give everyone nicknames based on anime characters - "trista-chan!" ::cute squinchy eyes and peace sign::
I'm even wary to tell people I'm thinking of taking a class in Japanese or Mandarin - I'm an international business major, it's *strategic*, not so I can watch anime without subs -_-;

PS: A girl isn't worth picking up if she thinks a conversation about star wars isn't cool :D

Short hand being spoken, there's no need, my sister uses it, she's not even a geek

Elitism amongst gamers

carrying on about their modded game, I really don't care how you've made a good game better

L.A.Z.E.R, this isn't a spelling thing as such, but that pisses me right off, L.A.S.E.R is a acronym "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation".......argh!

10^9 is not a billion and 10^12 is not a trillion

Sulphur doesn't have a "f"

Sorry if those last few seem to be aimed at America I'm a science and math student and constantly being told by a few lectures otherwise it does my nut, I'm a proud Englishman
American's are taught Sulfur with an "f" and according to wikipedia, both ways work.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfur

Oh and I despise Star Wars. It just never interested me.
