In your case, it's definitely the avatar.

I usually check if it's someone I haven't seen before, and if their profile doesn't say, I just assume they're male.
Or you go through extreme lengths to find out about them. That was really...odd.
Or that. Um... sorry?
Yeah. You were way off by the way.
About your gender? How far off can I be?!?

[sub][sup]Yes, I know what you meant. Why did you leave all those false clues on the internet then?[/sup][/sub]
False clues? You just chose someone who has a very similar name to me.

And the same Skype and e-mail account as you?

But I don't think anyone has thought I am a female. I don't talk in an especially feminine way, and say very feminine things (not that I've noticed), and my avatar is the manliest raccoon you can find, so...yeah.

Definitely your avatar.

It's what people see first anyways.

I'm lucky however, as mine is both so it's impossible to make a decision on it. although my profile does say male...
Your avatar is...both? What ever do you mean?

In some of my threads or in other threads I've contributed to I've noticed something weird. Some people to automatically refer to me as female. I know this has probably happened to a lot of people now and again, maybe, but it seems to be happening to me a lot lately. I'm a little confused as I've never made out to be female, hell my profile states my gender and name as male and Adam. I'm not especially feminine in how I say things so this is pretty weird for me. I think its possibly because of my avatar or because some of the threads or posts I make aren't stereotypically male. I guess.

Anyway, I was just wondering how many of you have been mistaken for a different gender and how weird it got, and how you felt about it.
I find gender irrelevant on forums. Though if the need to use a pronoun arises I always say "she" following in step with D&D's style. Whenever D&D needs to use a pronoun they always use "she" when no gender is assigned. When I don't use my default it is always based on an avatar (whether it is a physical character like in an MMO or a picture under your name). Although on a forum like this I don't think your sex matters as much as what you say. I have had people here get into arguments with me go off on a tangent that they had a Y chromosome and the actual argument is an afterthought. Please don't do that. It isn't that we don't care that you are a guy or a girl. It just doesn't matter (to us).

...Fine, I admit defeat. Although, I'm not sure why you needed to figure out my full name.

Perhaps my humor, gamertags and the liking to purple hints them enough in order to jump to horny conclusions.
I love purple, when did that become a girl colour? You women with your colour-stealing ways... :(
I usually treat people "neutral" if I'm not certain of their gender, and if I have to guess (as in WoW or other such places) I always go for guy. It's just the odds...

I don't really think that it's normal for a guy to have a picture of a girl as a face.
It kinda goes against the point for me.
To me the point of an Avatar is to reflect an interest or something close to you. Music is close to me so I chose one of my favourite artists.

I know it doesn't matter to anyone, it doesn't matter to me either. I was just curious to others who'd been mistaken for another gender and how they felt.

Yes, it's your avatar.

And I'm often mistaken for a girl on chatroulette, surprisingly. It never ends well.

It was a challenge and an experiment in how secure the internet really is. Rest assured that I have no malicious intent towards anyone on this site.

Also, huzzah! Victory!

Not one here, the name kind of gives it away. Today though, just this morning a little girl walked past pointed at me and said "whats that?", what I assume was her mother then said "It's a boy I think, or a girl" then pulled her away.
I wasn't sure weather or not to be insulted.

So far, a couple of folks on this forum have mistaken me for a guy. XD I am, in fact, a woman, as the feminine username and chibi-Supergirl avatar might indicate. I find it kind of funny. But I don't mind too terribly much, really. I politely correct and move on to the next topic.
I assumed you were female also, i always guess by avtar, a female avatar tends to ere toward a female user. Thats why my avatars a guy anyway, its meant to represent you while you post. I have never been mistaken for a girl, fortunately escapist users don't really care what gender you are when discussion is in full swing.

Well your avatar is a female, and not a female from an anime show like half of the Escapist forum goers seem to be, so I assumed you were a woman. I never bothered to check your profile because I usually only check profiles when I accidentally click the avatar.

Apparently people think I'm a woman because of my avatar too, but I disagree. Just because I'm a man doesn't mean I can't have the cutest avatar ever! Now excuse my while I bury my remaining masculinity.

Damn I thought this was gonna be a thread about sexy traps D=
Better luck next time.

I try not to assume people here are male or female, so I don't make the mistake of guessing incorrectly. But, sometimes I do make an assumption of one's gender. It's those damn avatars. XD

I get mistaken for a guy online fairly often - it's not like I hide my gender or anything.

I should never have let the photo onto the internet. Where did you even find it?
I was actually really lucky finding it. I bookmarked the behind the avatar thread for situations like this and I found this picture on the first page I clicked on. Also I have wallet sizes if you like :3

I would change my avatar to a picture of a penis for the lolz, but I don't particularly want a perma-ban for a crappy joke.

People don't assume im male or female but they do assume i'm an arsehole.

They are, indeed, correct.
Plus I should REALLY change my avatar... the stock one makes me look like teh n00b.
