Gender confusion...

...in forums.

In some of my threads or in other threads I've contributed to I've noticed something weird. Some people to automatically refer to me as female. I know this has probably happened to a lot of people now and again, maybe, but it seems to be happening to me a lot lately. I'm a little confused as I've never made out to be female, hell my profile states my gender and name as male and Adam. I'm not especially feminine in how I say things so this is pretty weird for me. I think its possibly because of my avatar or because some of the threads or posts I make aren't stereotypically male. I guess.

Anyway, I was just wondering how many of you have been mistaken for a different gender and how weird it got, and how you felt about it.

Definitely your avatar.

It's what people see first anyways.

I'm lucky however, as mine is both so it's impossible to make a decision on it. although my profile does say male...

I'd say it's probably the avatar.

I've been told I talk like a guy from time to time. XD

Figured.

But I'd like to take this oppurtunity to tell you that your avatar sent me into a 5 minute laughing spree the first time I saw it.

Same, but normally I find that beyond "her" and "him" I won't treat male and female members all that differently. Or I at least hope I don't.

I usually can't tell who is male or female so I don't really have a problem with treating people differently. You could all be mixed gender android assassins for all I know. If I have to use a gender pronoun I either guess if I'm feeling especially fat, or check their profile.

People make assumptions about your gender based on your avatar and username. Hell, until a couple of days ago I thought Aby_Z was a girl, which he apparently gets all the time. I've never had a problem since my stereotypically male name is in my username.

I get this more at uni than here.
Sometimes I look at someone and wonder, are they male or female?

At least here you can sneakily look at people's profiles.

Just because his avatar is a woman doesn't mean anything. Just because I have a Repo-man as my avatar doesn't mean I go around repossessing organs which the owners defaulted on for a mega medical corporation.

I sell fresh ones on the black market as a side business. Nothing more.

As has already been established, yes, it's your avatar that makes people jump to the wrong conclusion. As for myself i can't say i've ever been mistaken for being female, though i can't deny people have said i'm sissy as an insult just because i don't always agree with the default, masculine Kratos syndrome.

WHO TOLD YOU SUCH A LIE. A TOTAL FABRICATION. DISREGARD SUCH A SILLY NOTION. NOW. NOW. NOW

Anyway, yeah i'd hate to feel that I was treating anyone differently on the forum because I knew their gender, race etc whether it would be positive or not. Normally i'll just say 'the poster' or put their name down, I really just do it on a post by post basis.

I know disasters may not be manly but BUTTONS!? Good sir, buttons are the most manly invention since the bullet spraying fire car that also turns into a giant robot, also on fire.

When I was in grade 7 I had stupid long hair and a high pitched voice. Surprisingly, I was only ever once confused for a girl, and that was from behind.

I often do that too, until I realise that the person is looking back at me. The quick look away and casual whistle is my only defense, thank god it isn't obvious.

I get my gender mistaken online all the time (I have absolutely no idea why). Most times I either roll with it and pretend to be a girl or politely correct them, it depends on my mood.

When I was younger I had short hair, I used to dress/act like a tomboy, and was seen playing football most of the time, people used to ask my mum how her 'son' is doing...

I usually get called gay/fag for an insult. Or wimp. I would suspect its for a similar reason, I never find myself alligned with the macho stereotype.

Ooo, my avatar has a girl and a boy in it, I wonder what that makes me, DUN DUN DUN!!!
Silliness aside, I kind of like trying to figure out the gender of people I see posting a lot(without use of the profile page, that's cheating!). I guess I'm easily amused by stupid crap. People get my gender wrong all the time on the internet, doesn't really bother me or anything though.

I have never been mistaken for a female. Which, when you look at the avatar, the profile and the rather handsome pic of me on my profile, isn't really hard to see why I have yet to be mistaken. I did however mistake one of my best friends on this for a guy for about a week til I checked the profile. ><

I have been mistaken for an American quite a lot, though. I want to know why.

I do this all the time, especially on newer members.
It's fun to stalk keep an eye on the community here...
