An analyst discovered that people tend to favor games developed in their home countries.
Gamers Really Love Games From Their Home Country, Says Analyst - GameSpot

I can say myself that I tend to pay more attention if I know that a game is developed in my home country, but I suspect I'm an odd duck and for most people it's a matter of the developer in question being at their home turf when it comes to public relations and therefore knowing what channels to go through to get the most eyeballs on their titles. That and favoring their home market since they can more easily account for what the impact of said advertising is.

I remember the time I was in Copenhagen shortly after a new Hitman game by Danish developer IO Interactive was released and there was a square where the game was advertised prominently. I doubt they pulled such big ads all across the world, so it probably garnered more awareness than average in their native Denmark,
I've never given two shits where a game was made. If anything I prefer Japanese games but that's more because of the style of games they make rather than being Japanese related specifically.

I would also add that local games tend to have the local language from the beginning and without shitty translation and often even good voice acting.

For the most part, I do like games made in Korea. But there are so many things that gets in the way from reaching GOAT status;

1. They have only just began to expand on releasing games outside of the country; Yes, there are online games that have been around for really long time, but the ones that were made available globally pales in comparison to how many online games that are exclusively available in the Korea

2. Too much focus on the mobile gaming market. This is a huge one! there aren't too many people who own consoles or gaming PC. If anyone wants to play a PC game, they simply go to PC cafe. But just about everyone owns mobile phones. So there has been huge focus on development for mobile games.

3. Way too much focus on profit. If you think western publishers are terrible, you need to look at the BS antics of Nexon, NCsoft, Netmarble, and Krafton. The reason why SK is only now having single-player games is that online games have been very profitable. Thanks to the economic boom in the 1980s, everyone gained this sentiment where profit comes first, and everything else can be put in second place. While this has affected so many aspects of the society, the game publishers put profit first.

There is one publisher, called Pearl Abyss, which is considered #1 when it comes to shadiest publisher. They had success with their MMO, Black Desert, raised their company value in the stock market, promised release of other games, but hasn't done so. Crimson Desert is supposed to be released this year, but even this game was controversial for being stuck in development hell.

Do I want to see more games being released from Korea? Absolutely. But games like Lies of P, Stellar Balde, and First Berserker Khazan are such an anomaly; Like, I'm surprised some devs dared to try something that doesn't generate constant profit

I am proud of what these developers accomplish but they can break away from the Soulsborne mold now. LoP, SB, and Kahzan kind of already do this, but more should still be done to take different gameplay avenues or genres.

And I would encourage Korean devs to keep doing this.... Too bad the industry execs are as much of an asshole as the ones in western side of the world.

For example, back in 2023, Korean Maplestory community found out that certain servers practically required more p2w compared to other servers. The items that players need to spend money on was a cash shop item in a form of lootbox, and it was discovered that despite being the same item, certain servers had better chances of unlocking rare items.

The lead directors held a live QnA, and one of the devs said the following (trying my best with the translation here):
"We are trying our best to give our player the best experience...... If we have the drop rates all the same, the reboot servers don't really have a purpose.....I realize we haven't met everyone's expectation, but I believe everyone needs to treat this game as a game, and stop getting so worked up"
That last part set the community on fire, and the director who said that is no longer with the company.

My point is, I want to enjoy more games from Korea. But not a whole lot of them make it over to the global market, and they are more often than not surrounded by controversies.

This probably means the same for anyone who pre-ordered at GameStop, Amazon, or Wal-Mart. At least they didn't wait until the last minute to say this.

I still don't understand why they changed the tone of the game from comical to serious.
I got into a conversation on Reddit about how Obsidian isn't a good studio and all their games have been just "decent". People remember that Fallout New Vegas was good, but New Vegas is only good because it's way better than Bethesda's games, not because New Vegas itself is great.

Every game Obsidian has made has just ever been in the 6-7 out of 10 range. I feel like they come up with good ideas and have decent writers on staff to flesh out a decent world, but they are missing something in terms of gameplay and mechanical progression.

Maybe if they picked up some of Arkane's old people and got some designers who did Deathloop, or Dishonnored in house, they could put together their good ideas with people who can make good game systems and it would drastically improve their games.

Or maybe work on only 1 title at a time. Obsidian launched Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed this year and they're both sizable titles for a studio that size. I feel like those projects taxed them too far and perhaps should have put a title on hold to really flesh out and expand a single title before resuming development on the second title.

Or find their niche game type and stick with it. I dont like CRPG's but the Pillars games are supposedly good.

Overwatch 2 is dead.

Introducing.....uh.....Overwatch.....again. https://xcancel.com/PlayOverwatch/status/2019118032635724211
Well, it certainly looks like they are serious with the rebranding, considering it's starting from season 1 again, and adding 5 new heroes at once. It might be a perfect time considering people seem to hate on Highguard more these days, and some might feel the nostalgia to come back to OW.

The least they could've done is add a subtitle to indicate a clean slate. This honestly sounds like they are baiting the players of the first game to comeback.

Sigh..... sadly I am a sucker for whenever devs add these significant updates. And just like how Blizzard is trying the resurrect the playerbase, I guess I will resurrect that old OW2 thread.

Honestly, I think I was a bit harsh on OW2; I admit I was part of the hate mob, and didn't really give it a fair chance. I am not expecting much out of this re-launch, but as I always say with these games, they are welcome to prove me wrong

I mean it certainly doesn't do anything to help Highguard in any way. Considering how many people still have OW accounts with lots of progression, they'll come back for 10 new heroes and a bunch of content for sure because they've already got investment in it.

According to this report, AMD has confirmed that the Steam Machine is "on track" and will be available "Early 2026".

Do you think they'll announce the price by then?
