So what are your thoughts on what is it to have a life, is it bad not to have a social life and what ever else.

I love going out socializing and getting drunk and doing stupid shit.

BUT I still hate the "get a life" phrase. Its so nasty and condescending. Who is that other person to judge what you are doing with your life? Some people love going out and socializing, some don't. Do what makes you happy as long as it doesn't hurt others. Anyone who looks down on you for that, isn't worth your time.

this kind of person i am plagued with, sadly. the college i go to is infected heavily with chavs. at least once a day i'm told "GET A ****ING LIFE, BRUV. GRADES WON'T 'ELP YOU IN THE REAL WORLD" or words to that effect anyway.

grades do help in the real world, you low life scum. and don't you dare hold yourself above me because i want a decent job later on, but you low life scumbags don't think of the future, do you?

I hear this phrase get thrown around a lot in our little culture but what does this or it's opposite phrase "you no lifer!" mean to you?

I don't have a social life, if I am not doing my few hours of voluntary work then I am sat alone in my flat gaming, youtube-ing, job searching or forum-ing.

So what are your thoughts on what is it to have a life, is it bad not to have a social life and what ever else.

I would say that people who think socializing is going out to get drunk have no life, whether they actually choose to do it or not.

Socializing refers to a very broad set of activities, nearly the whole set of activities available to us in fact. They account for a large percentage of what makes life a fulfilling and worthwhile experience. We are also genetically predisposed to be dependent on social interaction; isolation is well-known to cause insanity if prolonged. As I've said before, this is why, despite all the horrible things that can happen to a person in prison at the hands of fellow inmates and how much safer it would be to be isolated in prison, solitary confinement is still used as a punishment.

I think you may be doing things wrong, and you might want to reevaluate your judgements concerning socialization.

Listening to someone elses opinion on how to live ones life is rediculous, you nly have one life to live so live it the way you want to.

There are many success stories concerning people with physical, mental, and economic handicaps, sometimes all three. A common theme in all of them is that they reject the idea that they are destined for mediocrity, and work to achieve their goals in spite of their limitations.

Accepting the idea that one's life is doomed to insignificance is the thing that holds people back, not whatever handicaps they might have. Even people without such limitations will fail if they simply let life happen to them. There are a handful of exceptions out of every several million people, but for the vast majority, happiness is the result of earning it. It will not come if you don't earn it, and if you have it and stop earning it, it will go away.

To paraphrase Randy Pausch, the barriers are there to test how badly you want to succeed. They are there to keep out the people who don't want it badly enough. The people who want it badly enough will find ways over or around them.

This is not meant to bash you or attack you, it is an attempt to try to make you realize that you are killing yourself with your acceptance of your fate. Please don't do that. It's not easy to get what you want, but it's possible, and it's worth it.

"a life" is the life of my cousins:

Playing sports, getting ripped, getting drunk, being irresponsible, having low intellect, being narrow-minded and BONEING EVERYTHING THAT WALKS THE EARTH.

My life is:
None of that. Gaming. Doing homework. RPing. Internets. Attempting to be good at drawing stuff (I have good and bad days).
But I'm social enough. I have good friends. Nobody truly dislikes me, like, with reason. I talk to girls.....
I'm just too sensible to do any of that other shit.

To me the phrase 'get a life' has simply lost its' meaning. To many people, what they mean by get a life is 'go out and talk with people and drink and party and stuff'. In real life, more often than not I am, in the least elitist way possible, often disgusted by other people's lack of common sense and intelligence, and prefer sticking to places where I can myself decide who I talk to instead of being forced to talk to bigoted douches because that's the current 'crowd'. I much more enjoy talking to the people I do like and being able to ignore the people I detest without everyone making a big fuss over it.

I don't have too much of a life right now, but thats because I'm in a temporary living situation in the arse-end of nowhere, so all I can do is mooch on forums and play WoW because thats pretty much all my senile laptop can manage.

I wish people didn't associate having a life with wanting to get pissed all the time, but thats more a personal gripe of mine. I'm 21 and people expect someone my age to be down nightclubs all the time.
My mother insists that when I am older I will regret not going out to get pissed all the time, but I doubt it.

Oh I know that feeling really well, and I've kinda gotten used to it. I know just today several people were surprised that I didn't go out on St. Patrick's Day and got drunk. Well when you have responsibilities and have to work in the morning I kinda don't want to lose my job over a few too many beers.

OT: I haven't been told that in a long time, and the only person that I know will still do that to me in my Grandma. I love her, but she's still bugging me about why I'm not married or anything. Well for one, it's not the 50s so I'm not going to apologize for not being married by the time I'm 18, and two, I want to actually have a career first.

I think the only reason she's still the only one is being I've given a sarcastic answer to everyone else as a kind 'fuck off' so they just eventually stopped. I know where I am in life and I don't need someone to tell me how I should run mine when they clearly have theirs to manage.

I work, got to college and have a couple of friends. If I'm not involved in any of those things I just sit on my computer or play video games. I'm not very happy but its my life. Nobody gives me nonsense over how I live but I live in a family of people that talk behind each others backs. I've overheard some conversations. Apparently my families very worried that I "don't have a life"(A.K.A getting a car and driving around, partying, girlfriend,bla, bla) and I never dated *Rolls eyes*. I don't really listen to people that have made far stupider choices than I but it still gets to me every now and again.. At least my dad gets me.

Pretty much this. It's a term for someone doing something silly that a normal person (or 'with a life') wouldn't be doing.

Particularly when somebody is obsessed with something in an irrational way.

To be fair, I was once told to get a life by a dude who follows the Saints around during NFL season painting himself in their colours and wearing nothing but a "speedo."

OP, I'm in pretty much the same situation as you.

Although I kind of agree with people when they say I should get out more. I sometimes hit the point where I desire some kind of life so much that it almost hurts. But I'm currently broken. I'll stay where I am until I'm ready.

You think I am bad now? If I get this job I am going for I am going to be worse off. It's a night supervisor job at an old peoples home, be spending near enough 100% of my time alone ...

I think people place too much importance on social interaction, there are plenty of things to do without involving other people.

Basically it's just people not wanting you to do things they don't like, and their inability to understand why you like what you're doing.

I find it really dumb to say that. Just because I don't go out and socialise with people at parties and shit doesn't mean I don't have a social life. With sites like Tumblr, Reddit, The Escapist ect I can socialise with thousands more people than these idiots who say that shit.

I usually just stop taking someone seriously when they use that term, to be honest. As far as I'm concerned, if you're living, breathing and generally enjoying yourself however you see fit, then you have a life. And it is pretty fucking stupid for other people to claim otherwise.

The only time I could imagine such a term being remotely accurate, would be to describe Josef Fritzl's daughter during her imprisonment or someone who has a life sentence behind bars et cetera, but to say someone has no life because they don't go outside? Or because they'd rather play a video game rather than talk to people is just downright idiotic.

Yeah, it's not really the sort of thing you can judge someone on. I think I'm fairly balanced between alone time and hanging out with family and friends, but either way you can't tell someone they have no life just because they live differently than you.

It's a stupid phrase, used by stupid people who believe that their way of living is the right way and everyone else is wrong.

I go to University, I do my work, play a few games, watch anime, read manga and yes I will occasionally venture into the outside world for either my own personal means, or to go out for a drink with a few friends. I prefer bars to clubs anyway. I hate having to shout at people just to make my self heard. Also I do these things only when I want to not because it's the apparent social norm.

My life belongs to me and me alone and there isn't a person or force on this earth with the power to change that.
