Get the Portal 2 Soundtrack (Legally) Free!

Need some special music to test science by? Valve has you covered.

Valve's Portal 2 is rightly beloved by many for its pitch-black humor and mind-bending physics puzzles, but one thing that never gets quite as much attention as it really should is the game's soundtrack. Sure, other than a few bits performed by Jonathan Coulton it's never really all that notable, but it's well-composed and provides a perfect auditory backdrop to flinging companion cubes through space.

Valve wants to change that, and has released the first volume [http://www.thinkwithportals.com/music.php] of Portal 2: Songs to Test By to the internet - for no charge whatsoever. This first volume - of a planned three - contains 22 songs which can be heard at various parts in the game. There are also some shorter tunes specifically designed to be used as ringtones for your phone.

More companies need to do things like this, and it's no wonder that Valve has such strong good will in the gamer community. Now if you'll excuse me, this music has me in the mood for science.

(Think With Portals [http://www.thinkwithportals.com/music.php] - thanks to de5gravity for sending it in!)

Yayayayayayayayayay!
Game/film soundtracks are always good! And Portal's is no exception.

*downloads*

EDIT: After downloading, I fond that the song list does not contain 'Wheatley's Song' by MiracleOfSound.

I am thus disappointed by this album, even though I already have 'Wheatley's Song' off iTunes, all Portal 2 media must contain Miracles music by law! ;)

You can actually extract the music from all Valve games using GCFscape; you then just have to be able to sort through the music that's not pleasant to listen to on its own.

Seriously, why don't all publishers do this. Free DLC, free soundtrack. Thank you Valve, I hope that the rest of the game makers are paying attention, they need to copy you.

Also the fact that a lot of those things are like 30 seconds long, mixed together ingame depending on what you do when.

In other words, not listenable.

Yeah, that's why I hadn't bothered to do it yet for Portal 2, so I'm glad Valve released this before I took time to do all that work. :)

All of the games released before Left 4 Dead have only actual songs in the "music" folder though, so that made it easy. Left 4 Dead made it slightly more difficult by having both full-length songs (menu music, end of campaign music, the Tank's music, Midnight Riders) and small stingers that aren't great on their own.

My god, I hope that's sarcasm.
If not then... you have clearly never played Street Fighter 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFSqdUTZNdI

Donkey Kong 64: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EZMVEDwiHk
Project Gotham Racing 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3mNdSKEnU0
Marvel vs Capcom 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFA7FyCPtRc

Or any number of other terrible soundtracks...

Oh my God. Valve. Marry me. Because I am in love with you. For this. And Portal 2. And Portal. And everything you've ever done.

Gahh!!! Can't... resist... urge.... to do.... science!!! Fetch me my lab coat!

This is actually a really good soundtrack, and its awesome that its free. I love free stuff. This is why VALVe rules. And if you want, you can mix together all the ringtones to make a really cool 2 or 3 minute track. Its actually quite good.

Protip: If you have brought the game legally, you have every right to the OST and no one can tell you any different.

Now, if there is auxillary material on the OST disc, like remixes, it'll cost you, but the literal original soundtrack pieces are legally yours to extract from the game or acquire by any means otherwise.
