make sure you get Maria its the best gun in the game (its owned by the guy that shot you in the head)
Q-35 Matter Modulator. Nice try though.
Don't listen to the energy weapons haters, it is more useful than they think. You don't need to find more ammo as long as you have a good science (you should anyways) you can recharge the spent shells into more ammo.
Ahem

Ranger Sequoia

Guns - 1
Energy weapons - 0
What? Sorry, I couldn't hear you over the amazing energy weapons

Alien Blaster[/quote]

sorry? I can't hear you over the massive stockpile of ammo for the Ranger Sequoia

If you happen to run into Nightstalkers, Cazadores, and/or Deathclaws before you are at least Level 15, run screaming.
Nightstalkers aren't THAT bad.

Cazadores are...OH GOD, they make me sad and want to OD with med-x.

Deathclaws aren't that bad though, I mean, they only hang around one area.
I first encountered them at level 10. They attacked in a pack. I only survived using all of my 10mm rounds and pretty much demolishing my 10mm SMG and wasting most of my stimpaks.

And Deathclaws... I think you can still agree that running is the best idea if you meet them at a low level.
Oh damn, when I met Nightstalkers I was totting the heavy incenrator and sniping, so everything went a lot smoother with me.

I remember in FO3 with my level 17 character when I first met a Deathclaw, I was so confused something could take me down in about 3 seconds when I could run around and barely have to use stimpacs.

Oh, and make sure you download the official patches before you start. Adds plenty to game stability and reduces the number of bugs.
Please tell me it's free... I have no Microsoft points to spare.
It'll be free. I'm guessing from your post that you're playing on XBox. Not sure how that works as I play on PC and get the patches automatically through Steam.
I know how it works. Patches and the like are either automatic or available as DLC.

If you plan on being a rich character, pour an extra point or two into Endurance at the beginning. For every point of Endurance, you can buy a cyborg enhancement at the New Vegas Med Clinic that will increase your abilities.
It costs 4000 caps for each of the implants that gives +1 to a SPECIAL stat of your choice. (eg. 4000 caps for +1 Intelligence.)
It costs 8000 caps for a Damage Threshold boost (+4)
It costs 12000 caps for health regeneration (1hp/10sec.)

Those are worthy investments, but you need one point of Endurance for each implant you want to add.

Also, Endurance adds health, which you'll need a lot of.

So yeah... invest in Endurance early on.
Important to note that only your initial Endurance and any increases via Intense Training count toward your max number of implants. Anything else is ignored, including drugs and the endurance implant.

BIG RED WARNING LIGHT

Stay away from Deathclaws and Cazadores.

Really. Don't go north.

Learn Caravan and build a good deck ASAP. It's a licence to print money.

Just remember to do all your selling before you play a merchant... then clean them out at caravan... then do all yourt buying... then clean them out again.

shh you'll ruin my argument...

on a serious note, go to the gun runners and buy the stuff you need to make the ammo and you'll be swimming in it in no time.

Make... Ammo...? Booerns. I'll stick to my anti-material rifle.

Mwuhahaha I have too much money in NV.

I basically stole all the Casino money, and almost everyone who played Caravan.

I just snagged a copy yesterday and I watched the ZP review and he said the same thing. And I felt the same way you do. And I can tell you only death lies in them there hills. Flying horrible death

Any preliminary tips? (that won't spoil or break the game?) That is, I'll find the gamebreaking exploits on my own.

Fallout 3 Veteran so feel free to reference FO3 as a comparison.
Stick to the roads early on. There's a few bandits here and there (along with a few mines), but it's not like Fallout 3 where avoiding roads was the smarter move.

And take the time to learn how to play Caravan. It's easily won and will solve your cap problems before you get to The Strip.

New Vegas is a friendlier place than the Capital Wasteland, so the early going isn't going to be a huge challenge. It's mostly about figuring out the players and how you fit in. Personally, I enjoyed that a lot more.

Good to know. I love FO3 but hurdling through the first few levels, trying first thing to get all the 'towns' explored was a damn chore.

There's far less reliance on VATS - it's a gameplay addition rather than dominating combat entirely. Also, optimised melee characters are oh so slightly overpowered.
Good news for my assassin character I have on FO3.
Chinese Stealth Suit is my GOD.
Well, I've got some bad news for you: the Stealth Suit no longer has a stealth field, just +5 Sneak and I think it may increase the strength/duration of Stealth Boys. And Stealth Boys are ridiculously rare, unless you side with a certain faction.

Fallout New Vegas is brilliant. Quite difficult though, at the start.. Especially if you go North. The most important rule is to stay away from the mountains and the quarry. If you aren't comfortable with your weapons or armour, you aren't ready to tackle that stuff.
Also, combat skills like Guns and Energy weapons aren't too important, compared to things like speech, repair, science and lockpicking.
Another important rule: Remember which armour you're wearing. The legion don't take too kindly to a badass with ranger armour and a fireaxe...

I found Barter in Fo3 to be sacrificeable. I got money just from consistent play. Does it have a bigger part in NV?
Much bigger. It has the same benefits as in FO3, but in New Vegas, there are skill checks in dialogue for many different skills, not just Speech. Having a high Barter will be useful for solving quests diplomatically, because often it works in the same way as a Speech check. This applies to all skills, but particularly Barter. It's vital for a diplomat character.

Its also more useful anyway, because weapons and armour are much more expensive. You can pay several thousand caps for a set of combat armour.

Have a stat of at least 7 Luck and a high Barter skill and you'll be rolling in money as soon as you get to New Vegas.

Like others have said, DON'T GO NORTH. Really, take the suggestions of the NPCs and take the safer route. Even sneaking will do you no good there.
