Old mother Lady Masako is such a ridiculous character. Never mind that the number of women warriors I encountered before her was already absurd. Extent of women being trained was mostly to protect the castle as a last line, since alternative was rape and death, same as in Europe. But I'm supposed to believe this old lady wouldn't immediately get her ass kicked.
She was properly trained and experienced. And she is from a time where women of samurai households were generally trained in weapon even if rarely deployed. Most of the grunts she is fighting are not. That part actually works. The only issue with her story is imho how the heck her sister managed to get all those ressources for a newly to establish samurai clan. Also I don't think Masako is supposed to be all that old. She is likely in her late fourties, which is absolutely not too old for fighting.
I know that the portrayal of women is very unrealistic and that the armor depicted is from three centuries later.
Now if you want complain about that :
- Masakos armor works better for the time than many of Jins options. But yes, it is still too modern.
- This is an era where high ranked female fighters do make more sense. Tomoe Gozen died 1247, slightly more than 3 decades earlier. A women who was personal bodygurad of the shogun, fought in several battles, had duels with enemy commanders and took their heads. And while the most prominent, she is not even the only named noble female fighter of those conflicts, both side have several that made in into the Heike story, which is the most complete account of these events. And people seemingly did not find that strange.
