People wonder why so many animals in Aussie have such potent venom comparative to their size/prey, well I have the answer for you. The venom is made to kill Australians! The animals are trying to wipe out humanity on their continent.. Dun dun duuunnnn! ;p

I live in Australia and this is the first I have heard of this.
Damn you traditional media! How dare you focus on swine flu instead of the real issue of giant spiders!!!

A similar situation exists in Tasmania (I think) where residents of a town are terrorised by large, extremely resilient ants that can kill if you have an allergy to their venom, an allergy which is very common.

Come to Australia!
We have the greatest wildlife in the world!
Damn right we do! The largest range of, and most lethal snakes in the world...and the box jellyfish.

Jesus CHRIST I'm glad I live in Adelaide. Huntsmen I can deal with, but not THAT.
Hunstmen are more venomous and are (prepares aussie accent) hostile little critters, well I know the brazilian hunstman is extremely hostile, the aussie version is probably more laid back until you eye up his missus.

I've had a tarantula sine I was five, in my experience, as long as you don't scare them or do anything violent to them, they make pretty good pets and won't harm you. Admittedly my spider isn't that big, and probably never killed anything bigger than a cricket, but that's my two cents.

It ain't that bad. Once they lay eggs in your skin, you're pretty safe, well... no, you're not. Sometimes the movement of the growing babies in your skin wakes you up at night. They eat their way out of your skin, then they slowly eat you, inside-out. Oh well, it's worth it for the lovely climate :)

And spiders.
and werewolves
Okay! So the only things we have to fear are spiders, snakes, WEREWOLVES, sharks, dying alone, zombies, clowns, heights, big dogs, robots with human brains, Johnson's wife, AND fear itself!
-everyone nods in agreement-

i used to live in australia, now i live in sweden it's cold, wet and grey. Still miles better than everything burning and freak fucking spiders everywhere.
soon the spiders will catch on fire and you really have a b-movie going.
In Sweden a poisonous animal means something that does slightly more than a bee sting.
In Australia a poisonous animal means something that deals death within 2 hours, very poisonous means death within 2 minutes.

Oh, I am so going to hell for this, but...

"You Totally for the ones that kill ya instantly with heart shots!"
hell was never more worth it. =)

I live in Australia. These tarantulas are no big deal compared to some of the other spiders we have that already live in urban environments. Tarantulas don't kill humans for a start, also they're fairly easy to spot. Check the facts about Australian spiders here:

http://www.termite.com.au/spider-identification.html

Compared to the two at the top of that chart, the tarantula is nothing to fear.
