When this gamergirl trend started people were all over it. Now it's about finding a girl who enjoys the same genre/group of games that you do out of the masses of attention seekers.

Male here.

Find it unbelievably stupid, playing on Black ops or Modern warfare three. The things girls say to seek attention for guys.. "Don't Shoot me I'm new heheheh!" Or "I'm a girl go easy on me." Or my personal favorite.. *Sarcasm* "Oh you shot me your so mean to me, shooting a girl." And some people just eat it up! isn't the whole game about shooting each other up for points to win? Not a freakin' sissy tea cup party. If I wanted to see girls be attention whores, would be on Facebook. No its a video game, play it right.

To that, I bloody shoot up the whining brats until they rage quit. Pft. Just because you have boobs doesn't give you the excuse to be a poor gamer.

What worries me here is how people define "attention whore" in this thread.

I gush on Facebook about games I'm excited about and rage when my pre-orders take forever to get delivered. I go on and on about how awesome this-and-that game was to friends who couldn't care less but still politely nod and smile. When I meet new people, I will at one point or another in the conversation ask them if they play games.

... am I an attention whore?

Oh, and I don't really play multiplayer games (because I prefer to suck in peace) so none of that "HAI GAIZ IMMA GURL" for me.

That's like a description of me but I get away with it because I'm female! Hooray!

(double standards are sometimes ftw)

Sorry to curb your enthusiasm but we already covered that, read page three to see how this story ends. :p
That reminded me of one of those old make your own adventure books. xD
Ah, I'm glad the subtlety wasn't too much. I almost gave it away but I held off in the very last second :D.

As for the whole manchildren thing, that's just a myth, men never truly grow up, no matter if their thing is golf or games or politics or w/e, they're still kids inside. As for the living with your parents part, that's just a monetary thing, I'm sure if these men could live in a place with the exact same levels of comfort but without their parents there they'd opt for that in a second, I know I did :D.

There are tons of girl gamers and they usually keep a better conversation then most dudes that I talk to. The thing that I've noticed is that the definition of "gamer" is really odd nowadays.

Like, a girl that can play a JRPG for almost 100+ hrs on one playthrough could be considered a gamer, but a "hardcore" gamer is someone that plays all the major titles that you'll probably forget about in a couple of months. Some male "gamers" call themselves that due to the fact that they play Halo or CoD religiously.

It's like, you aren't a gamer unless you put hundreds of hours into the multiplayer of the game. That's kinda why I like Yahtzee's reviews since he focuses mainly on the single player aspects.

One thing that truly irks me are those girls that feel the need to "prove themselves." Like that Mrs. Violence chick, that said something along the lines of "I'm a girl gamer, and I wanna prove that girls can play video games" on the Controller, that Battlefield 3 webseries. There are plenty of games out there, but FPSs shouldn't be the genre that make you a gamer.

Believe me, I've had so many more intense moments in Catherine and the Persona games that had my heart beating so fast due to being nervous or accomplishing something then in any "hardcore FPS."

My girlfriend is pretty poor so whenever she comes over to hang out we spend all our time playing games like Zelda or Arkham City (both of which she beat). She even beat Persona 4 before I did and I'm the one that owns it! I think it's safe to assume that she's a gamer, even with her measly 6 hrs of CoD: BlOps online playtime.

Sorry for the tl;dr essay here, but I feel like needed to get my point across. Plus, I have nothing to do at work right now, soyea.

All I have to say is, have you watched that recent WoW ad that showed that girl gamer.... As a gamer period I found that ad to be very insulting.

Actually, "hardcore FPS" is a paradox since modern FPSs are all surprisingly easy and dumbed down so that they'll attract a wider audience. If they were talking about things like competitive fighting games or starcraft or something then yeah but just playing an FPS online a lot in fact makes you less of a hardcore "gamer" than having played even just one Jrpg all the way through. Playing Jrpgs or other slower, longer, more thought-demanding games is a testament of your gamer metal. Playing an FPS is a testament of breathing.

A friend of mine's a bit like that. She sports a Zelda-related tattoo and whatnot, but barely plays videogames. Rather, her gaming apparel and body-art has more to do with seeming hip and happening to her clique of gamer friends. But whatever, she's pretty awesome.

I don't consider myself special for being a 'gamer girl', but I will identify myself as such and make jokes about it :D

I don't care if girls play games or not. I don't rate a girl/woman's worthiness on whether or not she's a "gamer".
Girls have the right to like what they want, play games or don't. The whole meme "girls don't play wow" is one of the most idiotic statements I know, especially with the follow-up that girls that play wow suck because they're girls or are internet-whores who e-seduce guys for gold/gear.
In my WoW guild there are quite a few women who play, and they're extremely good players. They play all class types (tank/heals/dps) and excel at it. My wife plays games, she's good at most of them (except FPS's cuz they make her sick from the motion with a few notable exceptions). Hell she's beat games/instances/raids that I couldn't do myself.
It doesn't make her "hotter" to me that she's a gamer. I am just glad we can share something in common, something we're both passionate about.

I just always approach them and act friendly and talk to games to them, and when they have no knowledge ask why they call themselves a gamer. I don't even ask them obscure things, I mostly just ask what there favorite genre is and what other genres have they tried outside it. Most of them haven't played more than that one game.

That was pretty much exactly what I was getting at. The more popular games are what people that don't know crap about games are kinda viewing as the hardcore games. So even the simpliest thing like "something moved, shoot it" is considered hardcore today. Give that whiny 12 y/o on Xbox Live a copy of Skyrim and see what he does. He'll probably have no clue as to what to do. Most of the girls I hang with have been playing Skyrim (or rather, most of the Elder Scrolls series), yet I don't see them flaunting around with the "girl gamer" rant.

Meh I'm not that surprised by girl gamers anymore. I've talked to a few online and one of my best friends is one and I can tell you they swear and scream like the rest of us when we die.

They are no different to guy gamers. Simple as. And any girl who thinks they are are just seeking attention for it.

I laugh when girls are all I play COD but when you ask them anything about it they can't really recall any of it. Its actually pretty sad.

Also the marketing these days to man-children is horrible with these 'girls who like to play.' Its about as plastic and fake as when it was women that were into sports now its just migrated to video games.

Like, I feel like I don't get taken as seriously when I play online and such because I'm a girl.
Which is actually one of the reasons a lot of "girl gamers" identify themselves as such. Because you're never going to break a stereotype by letting yourself be marginalised.

On the other hand, there is the flip side of "doing it for attention." But that's just specialised attention whore syndrome, not a "girl gamer" thing. Of course, it works because male gamers pay so much attention to female gamers based on a perception of similarity.

After all, girls as a whole are strange and scary. This common ground is clearly something that more readily allows approachability!

Or something. I don't get it, but I've never been considered a "normal" part of any subbacultcha.

Has anyone else ever noticed how many girls lately seem to think they're a "special snowflake" just because they play video games? It's really prevalent on Facebook especially. Statuses like "Yes I'm a girl, and yes I play video games <3". Or "lol I'm such a nerd, playin COD text ittt." Seriously, do they expect guys to just jump all over them like the fact that they play video games makes them hot suddenly? I'm not a guy though, so I guess that's why I'm posting this. Thoughts?
Simple answer is that theyre attention whores. they just happen to be attention whores who like to play video games and they know many people still consider the concept of a girl gamer to be a rarity. i find that most girl gamers wont even make their gender known

Take out "lately" and I'm with you. That delightful attitude also has something to do with females and the population at large regarding male nerds as woefully undersexed and desperate. I've seen time and time again girls and women use nerd guys as an emergency dump valve for male attention. Or at least they try.

That said I have seen some players just flock and vie for the snowflakes attention. Not even sure that they know they're doing it; the 'sweet, smart and cool' phenomenon. When the little attention whores popup I just roll my eyes and hope that most gamers don't think that all of us who are female are like that.
