I fell asleep with mine on, and by the time I woke up, I had rolled over on them and bent them. So as I'm making adjustments to my frames to be able to see normally again, they're on my mind.

Do you wear them? A lot of people do. How off is your vision if you do (or what mutant power requires them, Scott)? What style? Anything else you'd like to share with the class?

Mine are pretty close to Daniel Jackson's nerd specs:

Big and round is optimal for me because I have bad vision and if they go with this shape they can actually make the lenses lighter and thinner, so less distortion (yay?). Plus, I have a large head and small glasses look REALLY small on me. Big glasses look small on me. large glasses? Look fairly normal.

Okay, so that last bit wasn't serious, but the rest is. Kind of curious about how many other Escapists wear them (for any reason, not necessarily just nearsightedness)

Without trying to sound offensive, I don't really understand why anyone wears them whilst contacts exist. I wore glasses for about 6 months when I first discovered I had bad vision. I didn't hate them, but they aren't as good as just having good vision, which is what contacts are like.

Secretly I suspect people only wear them to look smart, yet ironically a smart person would just wear contacts.

Yep, I'm stuck with them thanks to my parent's shitty eyes. Luckily, I only really need to wear them when I drive and when I need to see something far away. Which is great, because my new pair sucks ass.

I look even more like a total dork when I wear them and I swear they didn't look like this before they re-adjusted them. Went like a cave dweller for an entire day thanks to that appointment and I walk out with horrible glasses. Now just to wait for them to release cybernetic eyes and I won't have to wear them anymore.

edit:

Easiest answer in the world to this. I don't like putting shit near my eye, much less on my eye. I would probably suffer a minor panic attack every morning I put them on.

These are pretty much the exact ones I wear:

They're a titanium frame, very light and very comfortable.

My eye sight sucks. It sucks bad, REALLY BAD. I'm very nearsighted. I'm not exactly blind without my glasses, but I can't see much more than shapes at a distance beyond arm's reach. With these bad boys my eyesight goes up to 20/15 (for those doing the math, that's better than "proper" 20/20 vision).

I don't like putting shit in my eye on a day to day basis, and I hate having to carry around eye drops. Worse yet is when I stay over at someone's house overnight (you know, because of the coitus) because I inevitably fall asleep with my contacts in, which is HORRIBLE FOR YOU. Honestly, glasses are a lot more convenient for me, just whip them on and go. Rather than having contacts I'd rather just get laser eye surgery if glasses ever become bothersome for me. After all, like you said, nothing is as good as ACTUALLY having good vision.

Also, I have dark rings under the eyes all the time (not from lack of sleep, it's just something genetic that runs in my family), and glasses make that a lot less noticeable.

I believe some people find that they irritate their eyeballs, I haven't tried them myself so cannot speak personally but I do know a couple of people that discovered that they just couldn't use them.
Cost could be another factor?

Personally I don't understand why people would wear fake glasses :/
but anyway, been wearing annoying spectacles for a few years now for driving. I hate them but I need to see to drive, I hope to get laser eye surgery one day.

Wearing contacts regularly is really, really shitty for your eyes. Causes corneal abrasions, ulcers, and can contribute to/instigate chronic dry eye. Girlfriend has a friend whose eyes got so dry she blinked and actually peeled her eyeball. Required surgery.

Then you have LASIK, which causes permanent dry eye in some 90% of cases.

So ultimately it comes down to how much one values the integrity of their sight and the health of their eyes versus a very mild aesthetic consideration (and in many cases, glasses can be argued to be an aesthetic plus). Not sure where you'd put your "smart" vote in that equation, but I know where I'd put mine.

I don't recommend it.

You'll hear LASIK outlets tell you the dry eye is "temporary". Dry eye is a self perpetuating/cyclical disease, and once you have it, it tends to be permanent. The meibomian glands atrophy and stop functioning properly, and there is at present time no treatment beyond palliative measures.

As someone who doesn't need glasses but DOES have dry eyes, I can tell you that you do not want them, and no matter how irritating you find wearing glasses it's by order of magnitude more pleasant than dry eye. Unless you like feeling like you have sand in your fuckin' eyes 24-7, being photo-sensitive, and having serious eyestrain from the second you wake up in the morning.

I started wearing contacts when I was 12 and loved them. I used to sleep in them and everything, and it was awesome. Something about my eyes changed about 8 years ago (maybe allergies/more staring at monitors?) and now after wearing contacts for just a few hours I get headaches and my eyes become super dry and uncomfortable and sometimes tear in my eyes. Now I can only wear the expensive one-a-day ones now, and I only bother with them when I know I'm going to be outdoors and away from the computer all day. I don't like glasses, but it's preferable to headaches and crap.

Oh yeah, and I have to have prisms in my lenses so that I don't see two phones when I'm on my phone, and that's sadly not treatable with contacts. I also thought that was normal v:

Here's what I wear

My head is really small, and all the cool styles that look awesome on everyone else look like ass on me. I like mine a lot, but had to go to three different places to find them.

These are basically identical to the frames of the glasses I wear:

]

I wear my glasses basically all the time, I actually have two sets. One is in the same style frames but pink, those are a weaker perscription set of bifocals that are for reading on the bottom half, and computer use on the upper half. The ones with purple frames are my distance glasses that I wear the rest of the time. I also have a pair of prescription sunglasses in Gantz frames, but I can't find frames that look like the ones I have for those.

My vision is absolutely awful, I have astigmatism which makes me horribly nearsighted, on last check I was like 20/70 and 20/80(Edit: I'm fairly certain that rating is entirely wrong, but my eyesight is awful.), I'm basically blind without my glasses. My prescriptions are out of date too, so this thread reminded me that I need to save up to pay for new lenses, because I get high clarity, glare reducing, and scratch resistant lenses that are rather expensive. Also my prescription sunglasses have to have double polarized lenses, because I'm very sensitive to bright sunlight.

Trying not to sound offensive? Then why did you basically say people who choose to wear glasses are being stupid? Besides that contacts can put pressure on your eyeballs that can actually make your vision worse. Also you increase the potential to damage your eyes by doing things like poking your self in the eye, when you wear contacts.

On that note: Rigid contacts hurt because my eyes are very sensitive, while I hate basically having to peel soft lens contacts off my eyes.

Just had a brief discussion with my friend sat across from me who has had the procedure done. She said that wearing contacts gave her dry eyes but since the Lasik her eyes have been fine. Saying that she did tell me that she was informed before the procedure, of possible side effects such as dryness and halo's when driving. (whatever that is)
But she and one other person I know are both happy with the results it seems, thanks for the heads up though, I shall research thoroughly before committing to anything.

I'm fortunate enough to have very mild nearsightedness. By which I mean that while I'm legally required to wear glasses to drive, it's more that after a certain distance I stop seeing facial details than it is that I can't tell where the face is. It's probably best expressed in this image. That's basically what the world looks like to me without visual correction, which generally isn't enough of a nuisance to warrant constant correction. So I wear them sporadically.

As for the style I use...well pretty much this right now:

Contacts make much more sense if you have to wear them constantly. If you only wear them situationally, like as reading glasses or driving glasses, then it makes far less sense. I'd imagine that people who require bifocals would be similarly unlikely to get them simply due to how bifocals work in the first place (long story short, you look through different parts of the glasses as needed).

Yeah, the main reason is money. Contacts are costly while I can get specs on my insurance scheme for practically free. I've wanted contacts for a while however and will get them as soon as I can be bothered to visit the opto.

I also don't like seeing everything all the time. I'm short sighted but can function (just) without glasses in most circumstances. I need them to read further than a few metres, to watch movies and to drive at night. The idea of wearing contacts kind of scares me being able to see my reflection in a window 50 metres away.

I just stepped on my glasses last week but I'm still wearing them. I just popped the glass back in crookedly. They're still wearable.

Not to be yet another dog in this pile, but glasses are simply easier to put on. You grab 'm and slide them over your ears and nose. Done. With contacts you need to be at a sink to wash your hands first, and then you need to carefully place the suckers on your eyeballs. And at the end of the day you need to yank them out again. That last part especially aggravated me.

I had contacts for a few weeks, and it's nice to see better all around you, to not have rain obstruct your vision, and ofcourse to look less nerdy... But at the end of the day I'm just a lazy guy. I like being able to take a nap in the middle of the day, and not have to carefully remove lenses from my eyes to do so. Even my sisters, who wear contacts and have way worse eyesight than me, will have their glasses on quite a bit because it's just way more comfortable.

OT: I just have regular looking slim, square shaped specs. I used to have this thick-rimed pair, which were nice a sturdy and gave a wider view, but the lenses got scratched up. The ones I got now are starting to get a bit scratched, too. I may be in for a new pair.

These are my glasses:

I have worn glasses since I was 8 and am very nearsighted(-6.25/-8.5), I have never wanted to wear contacts because it seems like way more of a hassle. I have thought about Lasik, but honestly at this point I like having my glasses. I think I look better with them and not as some would put it, because they make me look smarter, but because they contrast with my face.

Contacts for me as well. I usually only wear glasses in the morning or late at night. Glasses on too long gets annoying for me and they automatically make you look nerdy. The only glasses I wear in public are sunglasses. :p

I don't understand why people ram a piece of plastic into their eye to see when there are glasses, external hardware that doesn't require you to dick with one of the most sensitive parts of your body.

Secretly I suspect people only wear them so they don't look like nerds, yet ironically only an embarrassed, social inept non-nerd would care either way.

As to the original topic, I got PRK surgery a while ago while in the Army (PRK is an alternative laser eye surgery). So no more glasses! Beforehand, I just wore whatever the Army gave me. I didn't care. I didn't care for the laser surgery either - My boss made me do it. I think he stole the fun bucket of Vicodin they gave me.

I do wear awesome sunglasses all day, though.

Both my parents have to wear glasses for reading, but my eyes are fine. Wearing glasses makes my eyes water, and I can't normally see more than a foot in front of me with them on.
Does this mean... I'm adopted?
I'd wear glasses if they didn't completely fuck with my vision, just because they'd probably be the sort of thing I'd wear. Especially since I can't wear sunglasses all the time. Actually got told off by a doctor for doing so. He was under the impression that I couldn't see shit because of them, just because it wasn't a sunny day, and I was indoors. Sucks to be him or anyone else that wearing sunglasses indoors makes them unable to see.

Whoa crap, someone who isn't a family member who is actually as blind as me! I've been crazily short-sighted since I was 5, (-7.50/-8.50), and have needed bottle cap lenses since then as well (it was the eighties, they were freakin' thick back then). So I made the move to contacts as soon as I could, which was around middle school. It was a hassle, but couple months down the track it was just another routine much like brushing my teeth.

I'd love to go the Lasik but after examination they said my corneas are too thin and would collapse after awhile and then I'd be well and truly blind, so that's not an option for me : (

Anyways I don't mind wearing glasses every now and then, still much healthier for your eyes (getting oxygen to those arteries) but I still prefer contact lenses for more active stuff like swimming, running, martial arts, etc.

Contacts are expensive as balls and irritate they eyes, I don't see what's so damnably clever about wearing them. Secretly I suspect that people who wear them feel ashamed about looking 'nerdy' to the extent where they'll jam bits of cling film into their eyes.

OT: I wear glasses too, and the only thing that annoys me about them is the constant fucking cleaning of the lensy bastards. The ones I wear are quite thin. I also happen to be a graphic design student, which makes me a Saab and a turtle neck away from being one arsehole of a cliche.
