$90 US for XCOM 2? Seriously? Marking up the price for Australians and nobody else is already pretty messed up, but $90 US?!?!

In case you aren't aware, the Australian and American dollars aren't 1/1. Your game is going to run me $135. And an American only $60 US, or $90 AU. Hell, my European friend says it only comes out to $55 US in Euros there!

And this isn't the only game you've given a bullshit markup to. GTA5, Borderlands, Civilization 5, every game you've published on Steam is still over $100 AU, no matter how old it is. Even the original XCOM costs a ridiculous amount, especially if you want the GOTY. What the fuck are you thinking?! Do you seriously want an entire market to not buy your games?!

Seriously, I wanna know. I can't for the life of me figure it out.

Sincerely, a pissed-off Australian.

Edit: I just checked my local store; I can pre-order it there for less than it'd cost me to buy the game on Steam. A physical copy costs less than a digital one.

Wow. Just. Wow.

My brain can't even operate properly anymore, this is so stupid.

CC: Steam, why haven't you let us pay for games in our own currency yet? Every other currency on Earth can be paid in, including Norewegian[footnote]I can't spell, but now that it's been quoted, I might as well leave it up.[/footnote] kronor. Why do we have to convert every purchase into US dollars, which inevitably jacks the price up even if the publisher hasn't personally decided to fuck us over?

Well, as a Canadian, with the recent change to game prices in the last year or so, I can honestly say I feel some of your pain. It's 79.99 over here. Hell, MGSV was 74.99 CDN. It sucks. But hey, there's always Steam sales.

Ayup.

Still gonna buy it. Gonna buy the shit out of it. Gonna buy it in ways it's never been bought before.

At the very least Greenmangaming or some such similar site will have it for a bit cheaper.

Wow, that sucks.
Although I believe that 2K aren't the only ones to blame here.

Like how earlier in the year, we also had a 10% tax hike for steam games.
Not only that, but for me, in-store copies usually cost around $100, and if you want a collectors edition, I hope you have a thick wallet.

I don't know whether to say we're getting unfair treatment, or the economy sucks.
Either way, I rather dislike forking over that much for a game.

I almost never buy things through steam directly anymore.

here is a worldwide key pre-order for it:

~39 bucks american, not sure what that will translate for AU dollars on there, but as far as I know they don't screw the fuck out of you.

greenmangaming has their usually 23% off coupon right now, but that only puts it down to about 46 bucks, but there is that too.

Unfortunately, GMG still says $90, and doesn't say whether it's US or not, so I'm gonna say it is.

$90 usd? well that just went from a day 1 purchase to a steam sale some day. there is no excuse for it considering the first x-com game was released at half that price. price gouging assholes

Goddammit THIS! If you're going to spread cheek to the luddites in parliament and enforce a 10% GST on digital purchases (Something that is one of the most pants-on-head retarded things I've ever heard) at the very least you can allow us to make purchases in local currency!

I have wondered this for so fucking long. It's not like there's a limited market here. I understand NZ also can't get it in their local currency and it's USD instead.

Yes, Steam. Do that.

The pricing of digital games over physical copies has always baffled me. Say I want to buy a PS3 game, I can go to almost anywhere and buy a physical copy for about £40. But if I was to buy a copy of the same game from the Playstation store, it would cost about £60.

Why is this? I thought these companies where supposed to be encouraging us to into downloading games, but it costs an extra £20 for a game that I won't actually own once I've bought it. Its insane.

Hey mate, seriously, thank you so much. That is going to save me a shit-ton of dollars that I really don't need to spend.

I fucking love steam in almost all it's forms and believe that despite it's issues it really is the best thing that has happened to PC gaming since Valve was a thing that made games. Which is so I'm so fucking pissed that something as stupid and ridiculous as this occurs, I mean, holy jesus hell. 90 USD?!

I was talking to my family and they laughed when I said I hated the idea of the 10% tax on digital purchases in Australia, until I explained why it is so fucking awful. First of all, you have the American copy of the game. It's probably 40-60 USD. Then move it to Australia. But wait, those Australians are just dumb convicts, let's bump that price to 80-100 USD. THEN convert it to AUD. So let's take X-Com 2, 90 USD. That comes out to exactly 127.16 AUD. Then let's whack a 10% tax on it. 139.88 AUD.

That is too much goddamn money. My only hope is that if this 10% tax stays then it should be at least covered by the retailers already screwing us. But probably not. Apparently it's June 2017 when that tax comes into effect. Ugh. Why is being an Auzzie gamer so hard? The internet is already cruel enough on us!

EDIT: Does anyone know if those pre-order keys can come with the preorder DLC? I mean, hell, I hate their pricing structure but fuck me X-Com is the crack of video games.

Keep in mind that the Aussie Dollar tanked in the last few months. As a New Zealander, I've certainly felt the sting of our economies both losing a lot of value in a short amount of time. The buying price for Iron has dropped a fair bit (though its still higher than it has ever been) and since Liberal seems to have this impression that mining is the lifeblood of Australia, that'd be influencing the dollar a fair bit.

Also the massive downturn in China is causing our economies to drop. And our housing market. And our Dairy industry (If you're from sheepville that is).

Games were already marked up to shit down in Oceania, but with our dollars doing worse it makes buying games online even more painful.
Hey, you could always move to New Zealand. OUR steam store is in New Zealand dollars, which means we're better in every way. Y'know, the usual.

Why would you purchase on day 1, let alone pre-order?
Like, are you worried they'll run out of downloads or something?
Is this your first game or have you learned nothing about game pricing so far?

Just use the cdkeyprices website, way cheaper than buying from Steam. You can find everything cheaper there. It's only worth it to buy from steam when it's -75% sales.
eg Fallout 4: 60 ? pre order, 35 ? on cdkeyprices.

Your Xcom 2 is 50 AUD there. I haven't bought a game full price anymore for like 6 years.

My current "Favourite" thing about steam is that our AUD$ has dipped in value recently. The result is that we get 'regional' pricing of steam games which are in par with our ridiculous regional pricing....and then they're in USD, not AUD. So its regional fuck you pricing, with an extra helping of fuck you.

I moved to New Zealand from the Netherlands not too long ago. Steam asked me if I wanted to change my payment region from Euros to NZ dollars. Yea right, when Hell freezes over.

While i agree with this. The Australian pricing is so bad that when the price of the game drops it will be the original price of a full game

Kiwi here, can confirm steam is in our currency as is this game, has been for months now. They want $99.95 NZD for it. It's high for us, but nowhere near as high as for you guys, this is just insane.
