THIS IS A PR STUNT TO MAKE LOTS OF NOISE BEFORE GOING FROM BETA TO FULL SERVICE
Sorry for yelling but so few people read other posts.

I worried about their fate when I realized that their catalog wasn't really growing all that much and the initial wow factor had worn off after a few years. Also, the problem with selling classic games is that you've got a fairly limited number of them as well as a small market, and once that's saturated it's pretty difficult to continue making money. I applaud their attempt to make a go at it, and I enjoyed patronizing their site while they were still around.
hahahahahaha

wait no...thats not funny at all.

It's actually possible that this is a PR stunt. Some time ago CDPRojekt did similar 'marketing' for their 'lower price' game re-release series announcing how the whole project is going to be shut down only to actually re-brand it some time later.

As some are saying, it may be a publicity stunt [http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=23418875#post23418875], a bad one at that.

It's apparently a PR stunt [http://www.destructoid.com/gog-com-is-down-don-t-panic-it-s-not-forever-184350.phtml]. That's D.Toid, with an apparent quote from one of the Gog.com team.
If they put in DRM they would lose a lot of customers, since no DRM is why most people, me included, buy from them.

If it's a publicity stunt:

Fuck you. I now know what GoG is and will purchase to my hearts' content once it goes back online, but I still feel violated. VIOLATED!

Actually good show CD Projekt, good show.

Honestly, this is TWELVE DAYS after I finally bit the bullet and started buying stuff off the site. I was going to wait until I got my new netbook next month (old games + netbook = win). Thank God I didn't, and that I have all the downloads.

The fact that I regard HOMM III and MOO II as the greatest PC games ever made and that they were both there finally sold me. Sure I already own them, but playing Master of Orion II without spending hours
fiddling around with DOSbox to run it on Windows 7 was worth the six dollars.

Oh, and I was just browsing for more games last night. What a slap in the face. This is either the worst publicity stunt ever (for which someone needs to be dragged out the back and summarily shot) or the site is in genuine trouble but didn't think it might be worth warning its customers in advance. What if I'd bought that Codemasters pack five minutes before it went down?

Awww crap. I was going to buy a whole bunch of their stuff as soon as I got a new computer. Well, I've only just got it, and now GOG is closing up shop? I don't believe in a deity of any sort, but obviously somebody up there hates me...

Be cool people. They did say that the spirit is not broken. They never said they will not be around in the future. Until they categorically say that GoG will never be reborn in any shape or form then I'll hold out hope that this is a stunt to promote interest.

What's the bet there will soon be a DRM style of system, like Steam, that just requires a client and login so you can still download the game and install on as many systems as you like, but you have to login as yourself to play. That wouldn't be too bad.

They gave no warning what so ever. That just blows. I have yet to finish downloading all the games I bought so I basically lost everything except Duke Nukem 3d, Rise of the Triad, Prince of Persia and Beyond Good and Evil. They literally robbed me damn it. I can't believe it. I'll never do digital distribution again!

They'll have a way to dl your stuff next week.

This news story needs to be updated. So far all signs point to this being a marketing ploy related to them going out of beta. It's stupid, but it will increase sales, so good for them, but it's pretty douche-y. I expect it back on the 22nd when CD Projekt talks about stuff.

Having to use DRM to satisfy publishers? damn. The worst part is that GoG versions of games almost never appeared on torrent trackers and when they did people blasted the uploader in the comments for harming GoG.

GoG was one of the proofs that some (a lot of) pirates wouldn't do it if your games were convenient to get.

Edit: if it's a publicity stunt it's a bad one what aree the chances a pirate say's
"Oh no GoGs closed there's no way to get DRM free games any more I'd better share the ENTIRE back-catalogue so others can feel the love of DRM freedom."

If I had to guess: this will turn into something akin to Impulse or Steam.

Which I can live with. I prefer to buy old games from GOG if I can and ignore them on Steam unless Steam is having a really good sale. Usually because GOG has the decency to make it compatible with pretty much damn near anything and I have no idea if Steam tries to do the same. Valve is pretty good with their own games, regarding the PC, but they don't sound like people that do work for other companies in order to make a game compatible to current Operating Software.

I have full faith that if this does become a program that lets me purchase and play games through it, CD Projekt will do a tremendous job.

I have no knowledge on Impulse other than the basic gist of it. I like the name, though.

God damnit! I was thinking of picking up Outcast from that site at one point, but I never did it because I never figured out if it'd work on Windows 7 32-bit or something. :<

You will inform us shall GOG rise again, right? Please Escapist? Pleease?

Really sad about this, I got some gems from this site (both free and purchased) and was poised to get me some more :(

I do hope it comes back stronger and better with the same list of hard to get / quality classics but more profitable somehow!

I'll stick with the PR stunt theory. Because of 3 things:
1.They threw a promotion just last weekend right before going down (got perimeter for 6$)
2.There are news of this EVERYWHERE.
3.I don't want GoG to go away!

It's a little ironic that I missed this story until today because I was playing Still Life from GoG that I bought Friday after work. This better be them moving out of beta, how else am I supposed to one day teach my kids what games were when a game's genre actually meant something?
