My best bit of advice is, don't be afraid to be yourself. It might seem daunting, but regardless of who you are, you will find a close friend if you just be yourself, and don't try to act like someone else.

I'm a teacher in the Dutch equivalent of high school. It's not as bad as everyone tells you, they do that so you behave in your first year, which you forget after two weeks. A lot of students have to adept to being the youngest ones again though. The hierarchy is still based on your age/class, and you're the youngest one again.

The best advice I can give you is to just be yourself, make some friends, stick with them and do a lot of stupid things. (I once climbed the roof of the gym with some friends, a deck of cards and 3 crates of beer)

Honestly, there's really nothing to be worried about... at least not at my school. I will graduate tomorrow, and I didn't have much in the area of worries. Although, I would highly recommend taking some sport or being in a club. That's really my only regret. If I had done that, I could have gotten into West Point...*sigh*.
But yeah, don't worry.
On a related note, I actually made a thread seeking college advice a month ago. Fitting, I suppose, that I should comment in this one.

I' am also a teacher and I thought this comment was Hilarious, cannot think of a better way to demonstrate the stereotype that all Dutch people just want to have a good time lol so good job, "LETS PARTY!"

You are right though; Kids want to grow up fast but should just enjoy it while they can. Have a good time and make friends. Just don't take any crap off people, every year there a few kids who think it?s cool to be dicks (yes even us teachers think so lol). They may expect you to cover for them or take the blame for something they did, don't. Once you leave school you will most likely never see these people ever again. In fact that?s the case for most people you knew at school with the exception of very close friends.

Lastly, don't let all the horror stories worry you, there mostly just rumours to scare new pupils such as yourself.

I just finished my freshman (1st year or 9th grade) of high school, and I absolutely loved it. Then again, my social life consisted of my extracurricular activity and I liked most of my classes, so take what I'm saying with a pinch of salt.

*Sigh* In Soviet Russia, High School is Going Into YOU.

In Denmark, we don't run the same school system, so I don't know exactly when I can classify myself as 'high school kid'.
Also, I can't tell you anything about the experience, because of the same reason.

ahh highschool...as a freshmen people will try to take advantage of you...let them or you'll get beat up (depending on what school you go to)

Best Year: i asked this one girl i really liked out on a date and he accepted it, we went to the movies to watch "the blind side" (her choice) after the movie i walked her to her house and it turns out her parents were gone all night one thing led to another...sex!

Worst Year: i got into a fight trying to defend my friend whos gay (yes i have a gay friend) i fought off 2 out of 3 guys but then the 3rd hit me in the gut with his bag and my head hit the wall, my skull was cracked

Hahahuh...seriously I can barely remember high school (and I'm Australian so that's year 7-12), so it can't be all bad. Not as awesome as university can be though...

I don't know what kind of High School you are going to but I know I went to a school where there were hardly any 'bullies' and most people got on fine. The people who were ostracised were basically the kids who had the attitude that they were better than everyone else and held it against the rest of the school. We had a witch, an 'out' lesbian who thought the world hated her, but people only let her be because she was so rude to people, we had a goth but he was awesome and we had a fat kid who blamed every short fall on his weight and people got tired feeling sorry for him. Other than that, everyone was civil, we got on well and it all flowed smoothly to the point I ended up at university with no major issues in my life.

But I'll give you some tips I found useful:
1) If you're going to do something that is considered strange - be proud but don't be loud. If you like playing D&D, find a classroom to do it in, or organise a space, don't do it in the playground because it will just give people ammo to pick on something they don't understand but consider worthwhile picking on.
2) Try not to be cliquey. Talk to everyone because even if you're not BFF, when you need help for some reason, they might help you.
3) Don't be the bully. Just because you might find yourself in a popular position, doesn't mean you have to justify it by bullying anyone else. Same for being popular. Don't try to work your way up the chain of people considered cool. What do popular people do? Who knows, but it's either no different from what you do or it isn't that interesting. If you're going to be popular, it will happen naturally.
4) Try not to boast. Be modest. If you're good at something, it will show. But people of your age get jealous easily and jealousy isn't well controlled so you end up with bitter kids who end up hating you because you go on holiday five times a year etc. If it comes up, mention it. But don't be that person who always has to be the best, or knows someone who is the best.
5) Try not to be too shy.

I don't know what my best experience was. Probably travelling to Austria, Paris and Germany on school trips. It was school, but it was fun. I started up a website as I learnt HTML which was based on people in my year. I did mostly positive things and put up jokes and youtube videos but also poked fun at people sometimes - I thought of it as quenching the bullies heat. No one ever found out it was me doing it but I loved hearing people talk about it.

I was academic and I was pretty good at sport until I ended up with Osgood Schlatters and couldn't walk without being in agony for a few months because my PE teacher insisted I was faking it so made me do sports and ended up with knees so inflammed I didn't go to school for 4 months. I ended up with some paranoia and wanted to change school desperately, probably because I was so out of touch with everyone. Even though the school knew my situation, social services ended up poking their nose in because some teacher said something and I ended up having to go back simply so no one got in trouble. Luckily, I got back into the swing of things perfectly fine and I generally have great memories of High School.

Hello, next year im going into high school and I hear a ton of horror stories about it. So that got me thinking, what do people on the escapist think. So just list your best and worst high school experiences.
Well, being English, I never attended a High School. However, I have seen High School Musical once, and from my understanding it is exactly like that! You will be surrounded by a weird cult consisting of fresh-faced teens. They are all wholesome, clean cut, and apparently carved out of wood. They will not let their forced smiles drop, except when they are a bit sad (and you will know they are a bit sad, because they will loudly sing about it just so everyone knows. High schoolers are attention whores, you see) and they spontaneously burst into (extremely aggravating) songs about the most mundane of tasks. Expect to hear the well-known a cappela rap 'I'm eating a turkey sandwich', perhaps a rendition of 'Oh no, my shoelace is untied' and of course the ever-popular among teens, 'Look at me, I have EMOTIONS!'. Worry not, young man, because the true lesson here is that everything is fine at the end. Status quo is restored, and you'll all get together and sing a little ditty about friendship and acceptance and whatnot.

Then you'll go on to make several sequels, a live show, release some albums and possibly have creepy, emotionless behind-the-scenes sex with Zac Effron. And that is High School.

Any questions?
You forgot the ever popular,

To the OP: Don't worry about it. 8th and 9th grade are where most of the bullies drop out, so by the time you're a sophomore, you won't have much to worry about. Do well in school, find a group of friends, and be yourself. I heartily recommend finding an extra curricular activity that you can stick with throughout highschool. Could be the music department, could be sports, tv production, drama, or pretty much anything that has a persistent program. The point is, see if you can set at least one class that will be the highlight of your day throughout your highschool career. Not only will you be guaranteed to have one class you like, but it'll give you a secondary (or primary) group that you belong to, which, while highschool isn't really as cliqueish as TV would lead you to believe, it still helps to have a group of friends and colleagues. You won't generally get bullied for not being in the right group, but not having a group of friends can get lonely.

Edit:

The rest of this guy's post is good advice, but as long as you have thick skin, the part I have quoted here is okay to ignore. The last two years of highschool, I played Magic: The Gathering daily at lunch, and only one person bothered me about it. Of course, he never liked us, ever since freshman year when the idiot was walking around pelting people with his wallet, so we stole it and ran for a while before finally tossing it back at him. Nobody bothers my friends for playing in college, by the way. The point is, the majority of people will think whatever strange activity you like is cool, because it's different. The 2% that don't A.) aren't worth your time, and B.) can be dealt with if they really start messing with you. Defending your honor personally aside, zero tolerance policies make a nice threat if you've got a real jerkwad picking on you.

Do not try to chat up a teacher no matter how attractive. Was not a good day for my friend. He was a little "intoxicated".

Watch the TV series Daria. It captures the spirit of school stupidity.

That should keep you sane.
Ahh. That's nostalgic. Likely this kid has never heard of the amazingly cynical Daria.
OT: I remember High School. The terror of being a niner. Don't worry, you get picked on in the first few months, and then you are forgotten.

High school isn't nearly as terrible as movies, TV, and other people make it seem. The worst part is the work. At least at my school.

"Rule is, get in a fight your first day, or be somebodies *****".

Sorry, just wanted to quote office space. High school really isn't that bad. My opinion may be somewhat unreliable since im only a sophmore though.
