Going into Highschool

The one thing I always thought was hilarious to see is that when you start high school, you'll find out who really was a friend. I knew a bunch of people that I talked to all the time in 8th grade. When we started high school, most of them wouldn't talk to me anymore. It was just funny to see how fast people went form always asking me to go do stuff with them, to them acting like they never met me, just so some jocks would like them more.

Then, after I switched schools for junior year, the same people acted like they were my best friends when I'd see them, because there were so many made up stories that I was like a legend there, for reasons I still don't understand.

Well, your experience will depend on the school you go to. I go to a catholic high school with 1600 students (not all catholic, government funded, non-Catholics still have to take religion) (99% white, I've done the math). We have maybe one fight in the school a year, no one has been stabbed or shot in the history of the school (10 years), and the community is generally very nice. We do however have our share of idiots, mostly athletes who like to get the whole school in trouble, for instance we are banned from the local wal-mart (not that that is a bad thing), and there will be no prom next year because too many people showed up drunk.
My point is if you go to a good school you will have no problems, otherwise good luck.
Edit: I was voted "Most likely to become a super villain" by my graduating class of about 400, that is how awesome I am.

im english, so it may be different there but my school was like what i imagine prison to be, if you show weakness, people jump all over it. my advice, never back down and you should be fine. im not saying get into loads of fights and i am by no means trying to scare you, just dont get in with the wrong crowd and stand up to bullies.
OT, besides one kid shitting in the pool, nothing really good happened in my school.

Hello, next year im going into high school and I hear a ton of horror stories about it. So that got me thinking, what do people on the escapist think. So just list your best and worst high school experiences.

Well, being English, I never attended a High School. However, I have seen High School Musical once, and from my understanding it is exactly like that! You will be surrounded by a weird cult consisting of fresh-faced teens. They are all wholesome, clean cut, and apparently carved out of wood. They will not let their forced smiles drop, except when they are a bit sad (and you will know they are a bit sad, because they will loudly sing about it just so everyone knows. High schoolers are attention whores, you see) and they spontaneously burst into (extremely aggravating) songs about the most mundane of tasks. Expect to hear the well-known a cappela rap 'I'm eating a turkey sandwich', perhaps a rendition of 'Oh no, my shoelace is untied' and of course the ever-popular among teens, 'Look at me, I have EMOTIONS!'. Worry not, young man, because the true lesson here is that everything is fine at the end. Status quo is restored, and you'll all get together and sing a little ditty about friendship and acceptance and whatnot.

Then you'll go on to make several sequels, a live show, release some albums and possibly have creepy, emotionless behind-the-scenes sex with Zac Effron. And that is High School.

As an englishman myself I must agree. Our Secondary schools seem to have more alcohol and innuendo jokes than these american style song and dance routines.

For actual advice, over here you have to make sure you aren't afraid to speak up. You have to be ready to make new friends and talk to anyone. It gets better when you become 15 and everyone stops being whiney and emotional and starts making immature jokes all lesson. In my experience anyway.

My only advice would be to do all of your homework, every year, no matter how unimportant it is. Even though universities only look at grades 11 and 12, the study habits you form in 9 and 10 will carry over. My sister slacked until 11, and she is paying the price now on 12, she has to take a "Victory Lap" like about 50% of grade 12's, that is come back for a semester to up marks.

Everyones an idiot. Small fish big pong yadda yadda. Ignore the stories, year after year after year believe them and to be frank I'd be surprised if one in a million are true. I have just technically left high scool and am starting at my schools sixth form, its pretty awesome. The later years are great because the teachers tend to be way less strict about everything. Except exams, then they come down on you like the fury of hell. American right? High school is... what age for you guys again?

Adopt a why the hell not attitude and try to stay on friendly terms with everyone. Seriously lesson one I WISH I HAD LEARNED AT THAT STAGE is and MOST IMPORTANTLY:

Seriously. I mean find people like you and hang around with them but be nice and help everyone regardless of "group" it makes life a hell of a lot easier for you. People might be like "your not im my group luls" when you jsust be nice to them but it sticks that your a nice guy. Never go along with "we hate all of group X". Everyone in england tends to be alright people. Except the chavs. Dont go near the chavs. Ever.

High school is irrelevant. The university will provide all the knowledge you'll actually need in your chosen field and the general education expected from someone with an academic degree. High school can provide neither - all the basic disciplines (entry-level algebra, calculus, physics, biology, languages, etc) are covered by middle school, while high school only offers a rudimentary understanding of a painfully abridged version of the first year or so of university. Most classes there begin with "forget everything you've studied in school, because you have learned nothing".

The one thing that high school can provide is personal skills - both social and academic - which are highly likely to be helpful later, during the real education. Assimilate any and all leadership and manipulation skills and techniques.

Avoid high school if you can. If you can't, remember: in a few years it will be over and everything that happened there will be forgotten forever. Go nuts. If resistance is futile, might as well attempt to enjoy being a part of a nightmare collective from hell.

My advice is to study hard and get involved in one extra-curricular activity that you'll do very we ll at as opposed to three or four where you don't know what the hell you're doing. It will be easier to get a decent job and get into a good university or service academy if that is your plan.

That having been said, I still personally believe that High School is a crock of shit that teaches you nothing aside from compartmentalization and obedience. I still believe that it's tremendous waste of time and that the majority of people should learn an actual marketable skill instead of taking tests on subjects that most of them aren't intelligent enough to thoroughly study.

For me, my life didn't really change when I went into high school from middle school. It was pretty much the same thing. Also, Seniors are worse than Freshmen. Just throwing that out there.

- The most important academic skill you will learn is writing. Unlike most topics, it will directly affect your success in college and/or the Real World (TM). Learn to do it well.
- The second most important skill you will learn is public speaking. Give drama and/or speech & debate club (or even mock trial) a try.
- AP classes aren't just harder, they're also more interesting.
- The faculty can be your worst enemy or your best friend. Choice is up to you.
- Stay away from anything "harder" than alcohol.
- Tolerate people who are different from you. Don't explode if they fail to return the favor.
- Join an athletic team. I recommend basketball.
- Have a cell phone, especially after people start getting cars. Otherwise you're not getting invited to any parties.
- Getting into fights every once in a while is understandable. Using anything other than your fists is not.
