Can anyone recomend some good books to me. I like a book with a good plot and I lean more towards action or books that are thought provoking.

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher [http://www.jim-butcher.com].
Optionally, his other books are awesome.

If you're into zombies, Max Brooks [http://www.randomhouse.com/author/results.pperl?authorid=48807] does good work.

And for your weird apocolyptic future fix, William Dietz [http://williamcdietz.com/] does good work. And I like his video game novels too, which is somewhat unusual for me.

I have to try it out. Do you know anything about the Warcraft series. I've been thinking about giving them a try. I've also thought about reading Atlas Shrugged.

Seriously, if you want a good book, don't go for ones based on other material such as Warcraft books. Books are meant to be read, understood and paced differently to other mediums.

Try Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club is a place most people start), Will Self always has interesting, thought-provoking stories, Philip K Dick mixes sci-fi, action and philosophy with amazing results (movies based on his books include Blade Runner, Minority Report, Paycheck and A Scanner Darkly, all vastly inferior movies when compared to the original)

BTW, Atlas Shrugged is intensely boring.

My favorite fiction books are Catch 22, Fifth Business, and 1984. None of them are very action-y but they are thought provoking and considered classics. World War Z by Max Brooks is quite good as well.

For non fiction I recommend The World Without Us. Its about what would happen to the planet if all humans died suddenly.

If you are looking for licensed stuff then the novelization for Revenge of the Sith is a very good read. Far superior to the movie.

BTW Atlas Shrugged sucks.

If you like sci-fi I would recommend The Risen Empire by Scott Westerfeld or Slan by A.E. Van Vogt. Both excellent thought provoking sci-fi and the Risen Empire has some fascinating battle scenes!

ICE STATION by Matthew Reily

I promise you will love it. it is non-stop (well written) action and has a fantastic plot

Plot - It's about this squad of marines who have to investigate and defend this Research station in Antartica after the station discovers 'something made of metal and sends out a distress call. The marines get their first, but station is soon attacked by French and sas. (it's not sci-fi).

(in fact anything by Mathew Reily is awesome, except temple...stay away from temple)

If you like Tom Clancy-like thrillers, there's a series of books by a guy named Patrick Robinson. They're really great, as good as if not better than Tom Clancy. Atleast in my opinion. And the New York Times's opinion. But what does that matter?

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (Blade Runner) by Phillip K. Dick

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card (Also; Ender's Shadow. Xenocide. Speaker for the Dead)

If you like Fantasy and Action together, the R.A. Salvatore's books on Icewind Dale and the Drizzt Do'Urden series are quite good.

EDIT: Seems like someone already took care of Dick, and Palahniuk too.
Fight club is a great place to start and he has many more. My favorite is Survivor. Also Haunted, Lullaby, Choke, Invisible Monsters and Diary. All fantastic. Rant is good too but kindof aping Vonnegut. As long as we're on the subject, ANYTHING by Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Robbins, William S. Boroughs, Hunter S. Thompson, and Herman Hesse will leave you breathless. With Hesse you should probably start off with "Narcissus and Goldmund" or Steppenwolf. For Robbins then "Skinny Legs and All" or Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates. For Vonnegut, Galapagos or Slaughterhouse Five. Also Joseph Heller writes some amazingly deep stuff but writes with a very slow and metered pace. Happy reading!

The Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons

The First Book is more like a collection of short stories that explain the past of the characters of the main plot (Think Lost with awesome Sci-Fi Stuff) and the Second Book, the Fall of Hyperion, concludes the Plot.

Epic, thought-provoking and has lots of cool ideas and some nice action. Sci-Fi-Must-Read

Thanks for reminding me, I was meant to read 1984 but I had forgotten about it.
