Ok. I'm a frequent visitor of fanfiction.net and have been since my friend introduced it to me a year ago. the only problem is that no matter what section or subsection i look into, all i find is stuff that quite literally is nothing more than a thirty Sue Pileup (tvtropes.org reference for lots of Mary Sue type characters. and a Mary sue is... well go there and read it yourself if you don't know). and its not even the fact that the grammar is bad or anything, its just they are all the same thing. either they are stories about how the author creates a character who replaces someone they don't like in the story who everyone in world automatically falls in love with, or they just write stories that are so bad that i have to keep a steady supply of brain bleach flowing into my skull (kairi x mickey: the worst pairing ever to "grace" the site).

now i understand the whole issue with writing. people can only write (good) stories about what they know. I.E. can only see the world from their eyes. but i guess you could say i'm kinda tired of sifting through the crap to find the occasional diamond for now. im going on a two day car ride and my android can get the mobile version of FFN or even show Pdf files. so if we have any suggestions i will gladly take any and all of them.

i don't really have any preferences when it comes to what the story is about. i was just kind of curious about what Escapist fans have found to be good, if anything.

I have a friend who writes Harry Potter fanfiction. I have actually found her writing to be as good as the books at some parts. I very rarely read fanfiction, but the writing of hers which I have read is in my opinion excellent.

My Immortal.
Haha, no, seriously, I can't think of any. :3
Fanfiction is almost always a wish-fulfillment vehicle. Writers write stories about their preferred pairing, or they throw themselves into the story and go at it.
Proper fanfiction, I think, would be based on inspiration from the world itself rather than the characters. If people could get on that track, I'd read more of it.

I don't know if it counts but I find Ash is in a Coma and other creepy-pastas to be interesting.

Those lacking Spines

Frigging hilarious. I warn you tho', it's a Kingdom Hearts fan fic, but it's funny, it has a plot, and it goes about itself with a noticable point of self parody.

me and my friend have a theory about My Immortal and it goes as such.

once upon a time there was a person (my opinion female, his opinion male) who was around the age of 20-23. He/she loved to go to fanfiction.net cause its always fun to read stuff like that. but she got so sick of seeing all these fanfictions having no plot or anything even close to it, so she made a bet with herself. "im going to mock all these kids who think they can write when all they are really doing is puking through microsoft word. but i've got to make it so bad that people can't help but read more". and so she started writing My Immortal. and it went great. she made the writing so awful that people couldn't look away, like a train wreck...

..but right about halfway into the story, something happened. the story became sentient. it KNEW it was being written and read by millions. and being a creature of pure evil it started to get into the authors head. no longer was she writing the story. the story was writing itself through her hands. the same way how god wrote the bible through mans fingers, the devil himself was writing this story himself to put it on the internet. and then in the last ten chapters the authors mind started to snap. its why the grammar got so bad, not because it was intended, but because she couldn't help it.

now we may never find out what "Tara Gillespe" was trying to tell us in her original story. all we know is that she is no longer with us mentally.

(dear god why the hell does THIS sound more like a fanfiction then that piece of shit. hold on, im gonna write this down)

Have you ever been on TVTropes?

Go there, find the fandom you want, and see if they have a link to 'Fanfic recommendations'. If so, the tropers usually do pick out the very best of the fanfiction on offer.

Without having a show of game or series you want to see fanfiction of, I can't be more helpful than that. My interests in fanfic are pretty limited right now (because my interest in shows and games is pretty limited right now.)

EDIT: And because I always do this:

http://www.fanfiction.net/u/2151039/MelasZepheos

I wrote a Mass Effect fic! And some others.

I haven't found any that don't piss me off.
Then again I generally don't like fanfics, even the "good" ones, so my credentials for suggesting any may be suspect.

That made me giggle. Good work. xD
I like to think it's real... you know she has a facebook, right? It seems... suspect, but whatever. I have faith.

Looks like you just need to look harder, mate. There's tonnes of Fanfiction in every category where people are actually trying to write good stuff for their favourite series' canon.

I really only read stuff in the Half Life category though, because it's where I myself write. People there whose talents I can assert to are Super Chocolate Bear, HedyLamarr, Spartan-IV, Vulture (only written one story and its a novelisation), and if I was going to be a really cocky little shit I'd say Nintendolover222, who I doubt anyone will have trouble guessing who that is.

I would if I had the patience, but like the OP pointed out, you really would have to waste through the garbage to find anything good.

Not at all.

I've never been a murderer, but I can most certainly write a story about a murderer from their perspective - believing killing people is okay.
"Those hookers were ravenous, it was self defense!"
I'm writing a book with a murderer in it.

Well, if you're in the territory of "so unbelievably bad they're good" fanfics, look no further than Half Life: Full Life Consequences.

Other than that, The Terrible Secret of Animal Crossing is a good Lets Play/Fan Fic. Be warned, it is terrifying.

I don't usually read fan-fiction, for all of the reasons you listed in your post. I understand that fan-fiction can be a hugely important tool for a young writer to help get their feet under them, but a lot of times it ends up being a simple vehicle for wish fulfillment and that gets irritating pretty quick.

HOWEVER, I stumbled upon this Legend of Zelda story about a year ago and it is really good. The aforementioned diamond in the pile of crap, I suppose. And it is the only story I whip out when people ask for fanfic recs.

I have a love hate relationship with fanfics. My first fanfic ever was without a doubt the best damn piece of literature I have EVER read. I was excited because once I finished that one story the author stated that this was the first part of a trilogy. But upon further research I find out that this was the author?s last post in over 3 years. Going even further I find that the author had given up on the story and world she created, thus leave many such as myself high and dry. I have tried and with success here and there iv found other good ones, but never anything quite as good. And all this frustrates the hell out of me.

If you're interested in Firefly I highly recommend Forward [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4099993/1/Forward]. It has strong characterization, sticks to the cannon almost completely, has a plot that will make you go "holy shit!" more than a few times, and is just really, really good.

...Now if he would just update already....

I read a bit of one about Pokemon. It was about Ash, except in the story, Pokemon are actually deadly, vicious creatures. I think it was called something like "Sun Soul", but I'm not sure. It was pretty good.

Nope, hasn't been mentioned...
Well, I'll recommend Shinji & Warhammer 40K [http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3886999/1/Shinji_and_Warhammer40k].
A fan-fic of Evangelion, in which Shinji is actually cool. And not a total wimp.
NGE and Warhammer 40,000. You wouldn't think so at first, but it is good.

I don't read fanfiction that much, probably the only one I've properly read is a dark fic of the pokemon world called the sun soul.
