I know people that refuse to play legend of Zelda Windwaker, which is a real shame because its one of the most innovative and fun Zelda games. their reason for the self imposed boycott is its cell shaded art style. they say they don't like the graphics. I don't really understand a games graphics are the general term for the over all aesthetic of the game. As technology gets better we will see more and more things like Windwaker, where the game designers have gone for a dedicated art style rather than an attempt at realism. You may ask why but you probably already know the answer. if your going to spend hours staring at a screen then why not look at something interesting, we look at real things all the time.
It seems that allot of gamers think they know allot more about games than they think they do. for instance just using the term "this games graphics suck" shows a great measure of arrogance. Allow me to do my best to clarify, graphics are the collection of visual elements in in a game. everything from image resolution (clarity), animations, to frame rate, to artistic style falls under graphics. Most of the people i know who complained about the lack lust graphics in Windwaker did so because of the cell shaded art style, you cant really argue against the crisp images and fluid frame rate.
In another example I got Elder Scrolls 4; Oblivion when it came out and i still play it often, however my biggest complaint with the game is its attempt at realism. the environments are all hi definition creations to be marveled at while the inhabitants of those environments appear almost out of place. thats not entirely true the fit and look good in the environment when their dead. the animation is ridged and difficult to believe. This breaks the realism, and makes the living inhabitants of Cyrodiil seem out of place and alien.
so the next time you go to complain about a games graphics take a moment to figure out for yourself what exactly strikes you as unappealing.
