Disgaea 3's pretty much the only good one.. in my opinion. Tons of good JRPGs on PS1/PS2, tho.

FF7 is decent and cheap. Wild Arms is a pretty good one so I've heard. Those are the only ones I really know about >_<.

Don't be a bigot.

I think you've made the classic internet error of mistaking bigotry and expressing an opinion.

How does that work exactly? Bigotry is largely opinion. While free to express your thoughts, it's best when done within a similar context of the topic.

When someone asks "What are some good JRPGS," it would not be particularly smart to say there aren't any. Here, you are passively forcing your opinion onto another whose tastes are of obvious variance to your own, while not adding anything helpful to the conversation. Perhaps a statement of "I myself do not enjoy JRPGs, but I've heard that (Example) is pretty good." Here you both contribute something worthwhile to the conversation and state your opinion.

And while were on the topic, does the Monster Hunter series qualify as a JRPG?

It depends on your definition of a JRPG, since Monster Hunter isn't really a TRADITIONAL JRPG if you get my meaning.

And I think pedantically specifying the language I used is a little pointless, and since I find these forum arguments arduous and childish, I'm not going condone it any more.

Thanks for respectfully sharing your opinion...
I... Think...

I would suggest maybe something like Valkyria Chronicles. While it isn't a standard jRPG in terms of gameplay, it will certainly introduce you to the level of storytelling that goes into jRPGs. So if it turns out you don't really like it, at least buying the game won't be a total loss as the combat is absolutely fantastic all on its own.

If you're looking for something that perfectly fits the jRPG archetype, then sadly the PS3 is rather lacking. There's Eternal Sonata which is an a-typical, saccharine sweet, fluffy, colourful, and pretty jRPG but I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending that game to a first timer - I mean it's good, but not brilliant.

I would say go back a generation and pick up one of the fantastic jRPGs the PS2 has to offer. Final Fantasy X being a particularly stellar example, as well as the Shin Megami Tensei series (Persona 4 is generally held up as the best). It's either that or hold out for Final Fantasy XIII, White Knight Chronicles or Tales of Vesperia to hit the PS3.

The jRPGs on offer even on the Xbox360 are pretty dreadful so, you've sadly picked the wrong generation to try out jRPGs!

Thank you for remaining civil and polite, and kudos for that underlying tone at the end. I'll admit I get a bit zealous against trivial posts, likely cause from coming directly off of browsing YouTube. The community there is definitely one of the worst I have encountered.

I guess the biggest issue here is what qualifies as an JRPG. I myself refer to them as Japanese games with RPG elements, rather than narrow them down to only those with a turn based battle. Of course, by that means Dirge of Cerberus could be considered a JRPG, which seems oddly wrong. It's really up to the OP to specify what to look for here.

Let's dig through my small collection of games for things not mentioned yet. Jade Cocoon here, as well as the Digimon World series (of which I'd recommend the first.) There's the Lunar Series, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Dragon Warrior series (I only have III for the GBC and Monsters) and Pokemon series.

Not sure about PS3, but the first three Wild ARMs games are good. The first two are PS1, and the third is PS2.

I've never played four or five.

Apart from Disgaea, Eternal Sonata is available on the PS3 as well, otherwise, there aren't many jRPG's.

The Last Remnant and Tales of Vesperia will come to the PS3 as well (porting...)

There are more coming, but you'll have to be patient.

But if you wouldn't mind with some PS2-titles as well... Oh boy, joy will know no end:

Final Fantasy
Shadow Hearts
Valkyrie Profile
Breath of Fire
Shin Megami Tensei (including Digital Devil Saga and Persona, forget about Devil Summoner)
Odin Sphere
Xenosaga
Grim Grimoire
Star Ocean
Suikoden
Dragon Quest
Jade Cocoon
Wizardry
Dark Cloud (Dark Chronicle)
Arc
Grandia
Legaia
Wild Arms
Tales of ...

Go to PS1, and you can add

Koudelka
Chrono Cross
Xenogears

Not all of them are worth it, but... read some reviews, they'll sort 'em out for ya!

I'd have to agree to some of the above statements in that this is probably not the best generation to pick up a JRPG. Since you got the PS3 and (I assume) an internet connection, go over to PSN and download ff7 and Wild Arms.

I would also suggest FF7 Crisis Core if you have a PSP. It's not your standard turn based combat which makes it fun to play since you're controlling you own movement while swinging a sword/casting spells. And while the dialogue is absolutely fucking horrible, it's still worthwhile if only for the backstory to the original FF7 and the combat.

My rebuttal?

Anywho: Final Fantasy 7. Cheap, pretty good, lasts a long time.

Does Valkeria Chronicles count? If so, it is worth picking up. If not, listen to the others.
very good idea, Valkeria Chronicles was amazing I was shocked that I almost passed it up.

I think they're working on porting Tales of Vesperia to the PS3, but most of the good jRPGs are on the 360 for some completely uncomprehendable reason.

...That is really weird. The JRPGs all migrate to the console not designed in Japan and... and... *head explodes*
