I have never been into anime or manga, and want to see what It's all about. I want to know what you would recommend for a first time manga reader who wants lots of action, but also a good story?
I've been told Death Note is quite good, but do you have any other suggestions? Thanks.

Death note is an awesome manga. Full Metal Alchemist is also good (in my opinion anyway). Then again, I've only watched a few anime/read a few manga so my opinion may not be the best =p

Try Mahou Sensei Negima. It starts out rather perverted (it's by the guy who made Love Hina) but it becomes a very good shonen series. Ask NeutralDrow for details.

For other recommendations, browse TV Tropes or Onemanga, I guarantee you'll find something. Hell, if there's any shonen anime you like the manga is almost always better (the Dragonball manga was apparently rather brisk).

Akira.

The best comic I've ever read. And yes, I've read Watchmen.

Well. Hard when we don't know what genres you like. Tho I'd recommend : Elfen Lied. Since it's one of my all time fav mangas
Well, one of my all time favourite games is Lost odyssey. So I guess I like fantasy/swords/spells/big monsters.

Cowboy Bebop is brillaint.

Fullmetal Alchemist someone has already said, but I love it too and would recommend it. It's fantastical, has swords, big monsters and aclhemy, which is a little like spells/magic, so it fits your criteria quite well.

I'd second one piece too, that's also good.

Demon Diary:It's funny the charcters are pretty good and despite being about terrible Demon Lords the Main Character,Raenef is adorable. Its only short comings are that it's fairly short and the ending just comes out of no where but has a funny and sweet end to it. It's one of my personal favorite Manga.

Blade of Heaven- A giant sword fighting manga with quirky Humor and funny characters, it can be serious but it's not above jokes.

I agree.

One Piece is rarely ever mentioned when asked for good manga, but there is a reason why I shall recommend it: it's really good. Of course, here in America it seems no one really cares for it (probably due to our stupid love for 'ninjas' and crap like that). Sigh...

Anyways, One Piece is kinda hard to get into, but it is so worth it if you can deal with initial few arcs. If you don't want to deal with them then I recommend starting at the Baratie Arc if you want to get to where it starts picking up. It will take awhile to get to the current chapters (there are over 500), but it's a great series.

If you want some more recommendations, I'd say Eyeshield 21 for the comedy/characters, Bakuman (which is written by the people who did Deathnote), Vagabond if you want seinen, Fullmetal Alchemist for an all-around great story, and...that's all I can think of currently. :p

i'm going against the grain and not recommend one piece, as they are not pirates. pirates don't help people, or dress up in theme related costumes.

i reccomend berserk, but new chapters for it come out once every 1-2 years, so be ready for a long wait for the end(they aren't even close to it.).

GTO. Great Teacher Onizuka. This manga has EVERYTHING: Action, comedy, suspense, drama/romance, and flat out lunacy! And best of all, none of it ever seems contrieved, over-the-top or out of place - this wild mix of elements is not only blended together perfectly, but in such a way that it actually feels like something that could happen in real life!

The hero is Eikichi Onizuka, a lazy, unambitious punk who suddenly decides to become the greatest teacher ever. He is eventually able to get a job at a private academy, where he is assigned a class so rebellious that teaching them is considered a suicide mission. (They actually make several attempts at his life!) However, as Onizuka remains more of a street punk than a teacher, he is able to relate to the kids' problems and goes to great lenghts to help solve them.

The manga deals with everyday situations as well as more alarming problems, and much of the fun comes from Onizuka's nearly superhuman ability to come up with the most insane solution to any problem that may appear.

(A somewhat tame example, so I won't give away any of the REALLY good stuff: One girl is upset because her parents are getting a divorce. Onizuka attempts to remedy this by showing up unannounced at their house one evening, shirtless and carrying a sledgehammer, and whacking a large hole in the wall separating the parents' bedrooms, forcing them to share each other's privacy.)

Bottom line: Onizuka is a truly great character, and GTO is one of the best comics out there. I highly recommend you try it!

Anyway, a lot of good ones have already been recommended, so I'll hang back this time.

I like One Piece, History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi ( a normal guy gets trained by a bunch of crazy martial arts experts somewhat against his will and gets into a lot of trouble), Zatch Bell(Boy from another planet comes to earth with the power to shoot lightning out of his mouth. he has to battle 99 other people like him, and he can't use his powers without a partner), and Kekkaishi(guy has to guard site where monsters converge and evolve into larger and more dangerous monsters). also D.Gray Man( wariors o the church fight against living weapons that evolve by killing people) and Eyeshield 21 (really funny and unbelievably strong football)

Depends what you're into, Death Note isn't so much action as it is a conflict of intelligence, so if you want to see people fighting with their 'pens' go for it, Its excellent.

Basilisk is a ninja spin on Romeo and Juliet, quite interesting but also very brutal.

If you're looking for something incredibly lengthy go for either Naruto or Bleach.
