The Sam & Max games are good for a shift from fast paced shooty-bang-bang to actually thinking and getting a good chuckle out of it. Then watching a little rabbit do all the shooty-bang-bang.

My PC game knowledge is limited to say the least, so other suggestions would probably be better to look into.
I am, however, throwing out another Team Fortress 2 recommendation. If you like it, it'll keep you occupied for hours.

I hope you're trolling.

Anyways, Starcraft is as competitive as any other game with multiplayer. You're going to run into competitive players. You're also going to run into noobs.

I personally don't play melee. Especially not when I can play the custom user maps.
