Hey guys, question. I've been buying old games that I missed for the PS2 the first time around in the last couple of years.

is there any other suggestions of games I should check out.

Metal Gear Solid 3.

Out of the series, the most under-appreciated. So many skipped it because it was a prequel but it is so great because the game and its narrative stand so well on its own.

Great gameplay, the best boss fights of the past decade, great characters, Kojima's writing at his best and it has a great sense of humour but is most rewarding in its depth.

It's old school, back to basics and boy does it nail the basics. It's a stealth game with such depth you'd be tempted to call it an action-RPG.

I'd recommend the Subsistence version if you can find it at a good price... it's a re-release upgraded to have a MUCH more advanced camera. I.e. it is fully 3D rather than almost always at a fixed angle. The MGS3 that came in the "Metal Gear Solid Essentials" is equivalent to the subsistence version.

(also Resident Evil 4... though I'd play it on Gamecube if I had the choice. Also Timesplitters)

Lots of games I haven't heard of. I was considering God Hand but I know nothing about it. I've just heard I should get it. I'm waiting for the HD revamp of ICO (it's too expensive as is right now). And I already got Silent Hill 2. I briefly played Getaway, my dad used to own it.

I assume this means I'll be able to understand regardless of not having played any other Metal Gear games? Also, does Metal Gear 1 hold up and is it still an enjoyable game even though I know the whole cool final boss controller switch thing.

Devil may cry 3, Killer 7, God of War 2, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, Psychonauts, ICO, God hand and Okami are all great games.

Yep, I haven't played God Hand or Silent Hill 3 but Psychonauts is like my favorite game ever (I played it on the Xbox though so I didn't think to mention it. I liked Silent Hill 2 and Okami as well.

If you are into RPG-games, then you could of course take a look at Final Fantasy XII, but if you are getting tired of FF, then you should check out Rogue Galaxy (great RPG). If you are more into Hack-and-Slash, then try Devil May Cry 3 (I recommend the special edition) or perhaps God of War 2

I like Final Fantasy. I just didn't like 12 for some reason.

The Suffering games are fantastic, too.

Oh, yeah, I guess that's one of the few survival horror games for the PS2 i've overlooked. I got Silent Hill 2, Rule of Rose, all the Fatal Frames, and Clock Tower 3. What is that about, anyways?

Oh yeah, I definitely had Soul Caliber 3 too. It was fun for a fighting games. Although, as that last sentence alerts too, I'm not huge on fighting games.

I always really liked the Star Wars Battlefront games, so I'd definitely recommend giving those a try if you havn't.

I've actually been thinking about going back and revisiting some games I never played for the PS2, so that's pretty convenient of you to make this thread!

Rogue Galaxy is good, but I'm currently stuck at one area, lol. Still it's got good cel-shaded graphics, a real-time battle system, and lots of unique characters.

They aren't PS2-exclusive, but Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is good.


Don't feel too bad, I'm also just discovering a ton of great PS2 games! Sadly, a bunch of great games are also on Wii, PC, and 360, so I haven't played my PS2 near as much as I'd like.

I would try the Legacy of Kain series (including Blood Omen) and the Shadow Hearts games (except 3, it kinda sucked).

Well damn. Just about every game I was going to say has been said. haha
I'm playing God Of War 1 as we speak. Pretty fucking awesome game.
Oh and don't forget, there's always the PS1 catalog to play.

Retry RE4 it's the best of the series and Ashley is smart enough to run behind you most of the time, If you try DMC I recommend just playing 3 DMC1 hasn't aged well at all, I tried playing it just 2 days ago and cried, and 2 was.... well.. ppl just don't wanna talk about 2. ZoE2 is a mech game that plays out very nicely, fights get fast paced but always keep you feeling like you're in control.

The only problem with Retrying RE4 is i'd have to reacquire RE4. The only games i've rebought are FF7, Psychonauts, and JSRF (And JSRF was only because it used to be $1.50 in the GameStop bin).

Also, semi-related, have you tried Bayonetta, and is that any good. The whole concept kind of made me laugh and not take it seriously at first but a lot of people said it's fun but bizarre, and I love bizarre games (like Katamari).

Bayonetta is alright, but it's kinda of rip off of DMC. The storyline is a complete mess and I found Bayonetta to be damn weird looking. It's not a bizarre game like Katamari is, more bizarre like "wtf are they talking about and why are her legs so damn long!" Awesome bizarre is a hot pink gorilla wearing a suit and top hat head banging to metal music, that's Katamari; weird bizarre is a guy sitting next to you at a bus stop wearing a skin tight leather suit and mask telling you how he likes witch craft and gets thrilled from having hot wax poured on him, that's bayonnetta.

Bayonetta is from the same guy that made DMC, he just did it with Sega, instead of Capcom. I'll take Bayonetta over DMC anyday, as I hate DMC.

Another game I recommend: Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space and Bujingai: The Forsaken City. It's a hack n slash, based on Wuxia movies such as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, starring J-pop star Gackt

Yes. MGS3 stands well on it's own, though it is full of references to the rest of the series it means nothing plot wise. Mostly only Ironic Foreboding (ironic in the sense of audience knows something the characters don't).

MGS1 and 3 are my favourite because their legends play off each other so well. The Big Boss legacy, the Metal Gear and Outer Heaven. MGS2 is practically a spin-off game as far as I am concerned as it wasn't even about the Snake family line but someone utterly different, Raiden. And he isn't that interesting anyway.

One thing I will say is if you finish MGS3, and before you start MGS1, explore MGS1's briefing options and you will find some videos of Solid Snake being briefed before his mission and all of these go over what happened through Solid Snake's life. It explains really well and gives context to what has happened in the past 40 years, particularly, Outer Heaven.

Well since you already bought Psychonauts and everyone else here has said all the great stuff already, im gonna go with "Ring of Red". Think Japanese Mechas meets WWII + Advance Wars. But you get to ride and control teh mechas in combat. Ah te memories.
