I'm guessing they lifted the idea off The Dark Knight, where Batman had an idealistic cult following that was doing it wrong, with guns and shoddy suits and whatnot.

I'll have to wait and see on this one. But I thought Batman disliked other vigilantes and armed citizens operating in "his" city, with a handful of exceptions? There would need to be some ultra-dire circumstances for him to revoke that rule.

But there's something to be said for letting the player experience Gotham-the overgrown insane asylum-through the eyes of a typical citizen.

Yes In batman detective comics number 867 to 870, And it's actually quite good, one of my favorites next to the Black Mirror

Not quite a typical citizen seeing as how most of Gotham isn't role-playing a couple of warring fan clubs doing TF2 for their favorite cosplayers :D

OT: Inconsistency is a staple of American comics to be honest. It's almost expected that you'll go 400 issues before finding out they decided to retcon it so that none of that happened. Monolith shouldn't worry too much.

Hm.

You know, if they approached it from a "spies Vs Mercs" angle like Splinter Cell multiplayer it could be more faithful to the expectations of fans.

The Joker gangs get to go wild with guns n bombs.
The Bat gangs utilise stealth, non lethal weapons etc.

However it could also be really interesting if it is a "hockey pads" scenario.

Both the Joker and Bat gangs have to watch out for random asskicking at the hands of their "inspiration".

Bats may show up at random and kick your ass for wearing hockey pads.
Joker would kick his followers asses because... Well, he's Joker.

Both NPCs would kick the ass of both gangs at random (maybe quite rarely) and thematically it would still make complete sense.

I find it odd to think somebody would chose the Bat side, and then expect to be able to go around gunning people down (even if they are bad people) with Batmans approval.

Nobody... and c'mon, I mean NOBODY is going to buy into that.
Batman doesn't just "not use guns", Batman fucking HATES guns, fan or no fan, EVERYBODY knows this.

If you use guns/kill and wear his symbol while doing it... He isn't going to like you very much.

Gotham, aside from being located on the East Coast, has got to be one of the most obvious 1920s Chicago send ups I've ever seen. Metropolis is New York.

OT: I dunno. I'm not going to claim anything definite, but this sounds like a lazy, uninspired cash-in with no justification for its existence whatsoever.

Maybe the Batman's team will be like the gang he gets on his side in Frank Miller's graphic novel.(Can't remember name of the book-brain not working)

In the story, he gets them to stop using the weapons and call themselves Sons of the Batman(?)[Damnit brain! Why aren't you thinking!?] Possible they take a twist where they keep using guns.

If you're wondering how citizens dedicated enough to dress as Batman can justify the use of firearms, despite the Dark Knight having sworn off them in the early part of the twentieth century, you're not alone. I get how the Joker's nutso charisma could inspire a legion of violent followers, but wouldn't putting on a cowl and toting a machine gun around just make you a particularly annoying target for the real Batman to punch in the kidneys?
I mean, it happened, in the second movie.

Batman wannabes armed with guns, trying to take the vigilante movement to the next step.

You know I find this idea really interesting. Every batman game has you playing as the batman. Some do it well, some do it poorly, but most have similar mechanics, similar means of attack, similar motivations and similar weapons.

I like the idea that instead of playing as the dark knight you play as some low level dipshit on the city streets. Caught up in the same tide of theatrics that caused many of Batman's own villains.

Another interesting aspect, that I really hope the developers pick up on, is that batman and the Joker would have no qualms whatsoever beating the shit out of the players, regardless of which side they are on. Batman because they running around panicking people with guns, Joker because he's a damn lunatic.

Hell, why stop with batman and the Joker, why not include other bosses to serve as their henchmen, Mr. Freeze? Poison Ivy? Scarecrow? Why not?

On the whole this seems like an opportunity to see a different side of Gotham, what Gotham looks like before batman shows up, a bloody and violent mess where crazy people dressed like hamsters run around with sub-machine guns trying to steal hilariously poorly defended jewels for Gerbiletee, queen of the domesticated rodents, so she can use it as a focus for her death laser.

Bonus points if they get Mark Hamil in to do the voice of the Joker.

So basically the only 'batman' thing is the aesthetics?
multi-player type games dont really get story, and a team based shooter type gameplay is hardly original or something I'd think 'ooh, batman/gotham city/dc comics.

There might be something interesting or suprising, but without much justification why this should be a batman (without batman) game, it just sounds like the usual licensed meh game at best.

I just don't see the real point to this. Like ShadesOfGrey84 said, it could basically be anything, it just so happens to have a Batman logo on it..

It's way too early for me to make a judgment call on a game like this. However, based off what I've read, I cannot help but feel like they're using the Batman's license on another piece of Shovelware.

I do hope I'm wrong and that Gotham City Impostors brings something unique to the table.

Color me interested. I don't really care about the backdrop, but it's Monolith, making a fast paced multiplayer shooter. They do that really well, and it's been years since they've made a game that lent itself to that playstyle.
