I now guys who only play FPSs and such, but they've never really called other games "gay." Unless they just don't like the game; but I have games like that too.

Youve got to be kidding right, now there is another new label? This is fucking ridiculous. Regardless of the game you play, youre still a gamer. Enough of this stupid crap already, stop trying to segregate gamers because you dont agree with what they do outside of gaming. These stupid labels are starting to border on plain discrimination.
Starting?? I believe that ship has already sailed. We fight over what consoles we like. We fight over what games we like claiming our opinion is the only one. We bash each other over everything. Calling the entire gaming community a bunch of homophobic racists disguised as pointing fingers at one console or another. We have a single bad experience online and instead of claiming it an isolated experience we insist it must be everybody. It must be the game. It must be anything other than us. We need Jack Thompson back. At least he gave us a target to shoot at other than each other.

You don't get to mock people for liking different games for you. You get to mock them however, if they claim to be a gamer and turn out to know absolutely nothing. Like people who call themselves hackers and know nothing about computers. I'll agree with the majority here and say they're gamers in the casual sense. They play games like that, but play sports etc. A hardcore gamer I would personally define as someone who devotes most of their time to games, outside of normal socialising. Here's a simple test. Ask them about genres. I did this with someone you described a while ago and they described Oblivion as the 'medieval' genre. Feel free to rip on them then.

It's worse than your example of a Gramer in my area. Seriously I have a friend who considers TF2 a kid's game(considering he's never played it).

"Gramer"? Jock who "thinks" he's a gamer? Source please, since this is the first I've heard of your so-called "gramers". When I clicked on the topic title I expected a discourse on grammar, maybe Kelsey Grammer, and figured you just couldn't spell.

Speaking as a jock-turned-gamer who not only plays Madden and GTA but also plays Paradox games, trading sims, and the Civilization series (and would never use "gay" as a pejorative), I have always said that the reason jocks stuff nerds into lockers is because nerds are even more insufferable and self-absorbed than jocks are because nerds aren't just arrogant, they've also got a hell of a victim complex. Give me the sports bar crowd over the PAX crowd every day and twice on Sunday (three times during NFL season.)

I think of a 'gamer' as a person who plays and enjoys games. These 'gramers', as they appear to be called qualify. They sure as hell aren't as much of gaming buffs as we are, but they still play games. And why insult their choice of titles? Halo and GTA are renown for their quality, and some people like sports games (not me, but that's beside the point). This 'gramer' thing is similar to insulting a movie-goer for only watching rom-coms. It's silly and incorrect.

I thought this was going to be about Grammar Nazis trying to purify video games by condemning those with the grammar of a child with the IQ of a 2 year old.

You defines what I prefer to call 'meathead gamers' and yes I dont like them because of what they have made popular. I dont hate them or think they should go away but...well, the best games they do not play.

I think another term for 'Gramer' would be 80% of the XBOX LIVE population. And yes, it's because of people who (stereotipically speaking) chug redbulls and beers, give a nerd a swirly, then goes on Halo and questions/insults your sexuality without ever meeting you, that games like Gears of War 2 sell a crapload.

Look on the brightside though, there's always multiplayer games like TF2.

And just for the record, Creativity isn't JUST defunct because of "Gramers." For publishers, going with a generic FPS is probably going to be the more profitable and safer decision, rather than agreeing to publish a wacky and creative game with alot of heart. I mean, look at Psychonauts. In my opinion, it was an excellent game. Very creative, with alot of heart. Took Tim Schaffer quite a while to find a publisher for it. And what happened?
The game then sold horribly, and Majesco was financially screwed.

From a CEO's perspective, Safer is the better option. If they know something will sell well, they will keep pumping them out there. And let's not forget that one of a companies biggest priorities is to keep itself alive.

And finally: It's all for the purpose of fun. They like it, so let them like it! They can have their opinions, and you can have yours.
I would simply like to reiderate what I said before when this kind of question came up. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.129416#comment_form]

Agreed.

Yeah see, "gamer" is kind of a general term. And as much as hardcore people would like to keep casual people out of that distinction, there really isn't anyway for them to stop casual people from jumping the fence, so to speak. However, the more and more people discuss this topic, the closer we get to having a hierarchy in the "gamer" world, a tier system if you will. And to take things to that level I feel betrays the number one rule of any "gamer", which is to have fun.

I haven't heard the term before either, but I know people who can be described as "gramer."

I personally think that 'Gramer' is a bullshitty term made up by elitists who want to feel superior to people who aren't as absorbed as them in a past-time. Why is it that someone has to be a 'Gamer' or 'Not'? The title is an irrelevant non-specific term that people once used to mean someone who played games regularly, now it seems you have to be able to answer a variable pop-quiz of 'classic games', identify with obscure indie-hits and one-off wonders, and have a certain degree of skill to be classed as a 'Gamer'. You're not a fuckin' astronaut because you take an interest in games and it certainly shouldn't make you feel as if you're the judge of who and who is not at you perceive level of 'Gamer'.

Also, the sentence "Is there any hope for true gamers" sounds so much like the paranoid rambling of men who claim that "lesbians are taking all the hot straight girls" that I honestly can't help but wonder if there's hope left for people who enjoy games when people think that extra consumption and removal from their safe ridged exclusivity is detrimental to the industry in the slightest.

funny you mention it, here in MX we are filled with what you define "Gramer", they just go for the full selling titles like "SUPER MEGA GUN DOWN 56" or something, i remember i almost cryed because i was over hiped with the expectance of Fable 2 and when i asked "are you going to sell them at 12 like Halo 3 and gears of war 2"

they said "we were going to, but no one but you have pre-ordered this game, so you´ll have to wait untill we open again the next day"

ooooh, that make me feel awfull because that was the only store that actually sells video games and all they have in their inventories are "FPS" and other repeated crap

i saw they had a frikken image of Halo Wars, i thought "well, perhaps they are going to bring it" a week later it was gone, i asked why "well, every time they asked us what kind of game it was when we mentioned it was an RTS they wouldn´t pre order, so we are not going to stock the game"

yeah, that sucked, i wanted that game, well... now not so much i rented it from another place and i hated it, but still people only seem to buy "mainstream" games here in MX.

I'm sorry, but this is a bloody ridiculous statement. Yes, I agree that it's annoying when someone goes around insulting games with more than three colours for being gay, but those make up a minority. I mean, so what if they're douchebags? Douchebags are people too, and people want entertainement. Besides, it's not all that bad, is it? I've got a friend who's never been good at games or even remotely interested (Well, we played maplestory and perfect world together a while, but nothing hardcore) and yet under a month ago I got Counter-Strike, TF2 and Unreal Tournament 2004 (UT and CS were for the nostalgia factor) as well as half-life 1. Now, my buddy was spending a lot of time here, and he's an artist, so he's got a drawing tablet. I asked if I could try playing CS with it, he said yes. It went awesome, and he was inspired to try. Now he's addicted to CS and half-life, and he's gonna borrow UT and TF soon. He's been down lately, and I tell ya, he grinned with each headshot, quite an unusual sight. I've actually gotten him hooked on FPS'es, and he's as far away from a douchebag as you get.
Do I feel like he's intruding on my "TRUE GAMER TERRITORY"? No.
TL;DR: Suck it up and try to look at the positive sides of it

In response to this, I propose a game with two playstyles.

In one, you play a fantasy RPG in which you travel the world, killing monsters and saving towns so that you'll be strong enough to fight the final boss.

In the other, you play a FPS starring a Space Marine in the same setting as the RPG, only your job is to kill EVERYTHING. Leave no puppy alive! Leave no babies intact! EAT THOSE BABIES SOLDIER!

That will either get FPS players to try other games or get them branded as potential radical psychopaths. In which case we can hunt them down and eat their entrails. Mmm, entrails.

Way to paraphrase moviebob. Down to the whole Castlevania example.
Did you find yourself inspired after watching that episode, but not quite inspired enough?

This sounds like another thread that bashes the fan base of certain games.
