I don't understand the differences between all the ring colors. All I know is the yellow one is evil (is it Cowardice? Greed? I forget) and the bad guy uses it. Beyond that, I don't know what it can do that the other colors can't, if all the colors have a special power etc.

My only experience is with the Green Lantern from Justice League Unlimited, and even that is vague, except for when he was a kid and made that badass mech suit.

Yellow represents fear, and it doesn't seem to discriminate between the forces of good and evil. The rings seek out those who can instill great fear, no more and no less. (Batman was offered a ring at one point, for example).

Red represents rage and has the notable ability of turning its users into animalistic beasts.

Orange represents avarice, or greed. Notable in that there aren't actually any Corpsmen of this spectrum; one creature holds both the orange power battery and the orange ring, and because he's too greedy to share, he creates the rest of the Orange Lantern Corps out of energy.

Blue represents hope, and can act as a direct opposite of red; for example, Blue Lanterns have the ability to extinguish the everlasting blasts of fire that Red Lanterns can create.

Indigo represents compassion. Because of their great emotional empathy, members of the Indigo Tribe can replicate the powers of other Corpsmen.

Violet represents love. Sort of unique, as they don't create Violet Lanterns, but Star Sapphires (Star Sapphire is a long-standing GL villain).

And, of course, green represents willpower, bravery and the ability to overcome great fear.

Basically, each ring color and its respective Lantern corps. represents one part of the "emotional spectrum". It goes:
Red: Rage
Orange: Greed
Yellow: Fear
Green: Willpower
Blue: Hope
Indigo: Compassion
Violet: Love
Black: DeathZOMBIES!

The rings all have different strengths and weaknesses and other reactions to each other. For example, the Green Lanterns' infamous weakness to yellow stems from the idea that willpower is weakened by fear, and Blue Lanterns can't use their rings unless a Green Lantern is present because hope is nothing without the will to act.

The different colors pretty much have the same powers (flight, ability to breath in space, mental constructs, etc.), but some of the rings have a bonus or two. For example, the Red Lanterns can vomit a mixture of blood and napalm.

Edit: And ninja'd

I've never actually seen any cartoons with him or read the comics but I know some of the basic info' that they use a ring to give them powers to manipulate...green stuff and I've forgot...I failed...sorry.

I'm a huge GL fanboy. Even during the 90's, when comics in general went kind of insane, it was always my favorite title. The Rebirth/Recharge/Sinestro Corps War/Blackest Night/Brightest Day saga is probably some of the best writing I've seen come out of the DCU in a long, long time.

Guy Gardner was always my favorite. He's the jerk I love to hate.
I'm more of a Hal Jordan fan, but Guy's pretty awesome, too. I heard he got a new spin-off series at the start of Brightest Day called Emerald Warriors or something.

Definitely going to agree with you on the quality of Johns' run. He's become one of my favorite writers because of his work on Green Lantern.

They mix it up a bit with grizzly bears and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann references.
Tengen... Toppa... Gurren... Lagann? :D

OT: don't know much, but I do know that if I had that power you explained I would create a Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann to destroy... the universe? xD

And yes, I know there's a typo in the image, but I'm to lazy to do anything about that. and it's 00.40 in the morning.

Regarding the movie, I've resolved to keep an open mind, but I'm really not feeling that organic bodysuit costume. I think they might be trying to touch on the more alien elements of the corps, and that's understandable, but I can't help but think the original costume would have translated much better to film.

You know that picture of Green Lantern Batman?
That one doesn't concern me.
made me a bit worried.
frightened me. I am no longer afraid of the fear-themed Batman villain using a power fueled by the ability to instill fear, because the thought of a nerd Green Lantern just crossed my mind.

Yeah, I have to agree with you. It could just be that the one picture we have of the costume is making it look worse than it actually is, but I wish they just stuck with something like the original.

Yeah, see, that would have been much better, in my opinion. Maybe what we've seen is just a test model, or maybe it looks better in motion or something. I don't know. Again, I'm just gonna try to keep an open mind about it. I didn't like the raised webs on Spider-Man's costume, either, but the movie was great.

Green Lantern was one of the first heros of DC besides Batman that I really liked. I remember reading old(and by old I mean golden age) GL comics when I was ten. Here was a guy had almost limitless power and actually has brains and heart to go along with it. I felt Superman was disconected with humanity but Hal wasnt.

I never like Kyle Raynor or Guy Gardener. Guy cold have been a badass but instead of training his powers he is more content to be a goof. Kyle had loads of untapped potential he could do things with his ring Lanterns never dreamed of, but his mental health declined and well When your girlfriend winds up stuffed in a fridge it makes it kinda hard to concentrate.

But I have to say my favorite Lantern is John Stewart (the black GL) Almost if not as powerful as Hal, strong moral ethic, and Hal even asked him to be on the newer version of the Justice League in the comics. Add to that he was on Justice League and JLU cartoons.

I memorized the oath since I was a boy: In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let all those who worship evils might, fear my power, Green Lanterns Light!

I think it's best to stay positive in this situation. It looks like at the very least, the movie is keeping the green-on-black style of the costume, so it'll probably look better with some normal lighting. Plus, I think the film only started shooting a couple weeks ago, so there's still the possibility that it can be tweaked somewhat.

And even if the costume ends up looking ridiculous in the final cut, the cast, the crew, the film's inspiration from Secret Origin, and the simple fact that it's a Green Lantern movie give me enough confidence in the film. I mean, The Dark Knight didn't exactly have the best Batman costume ever.

I recently finished getting caught up with Geoff Johns' run on Green Lantern, became a huge fan, and found out that this thread apparently hasn't been done yet (at least, the search bar tells me so), so I decided that I might as well start a general discussion of all things Green Lantern.

So Escapists, let's hear your thoughts. Do you read the comic? What do you think of it? Are you looking forward to the movie, or do you think it'll be terrible? Do you you have a favorite Lantern or storyline? Do you even know who the Green Lantern is? I'm interested in anything you have to contribute to a discussion, so... discuss.
I read the Green Lantern comics AGES ago, and I loved him. Nothing like being able to create shit from nowhere from a ring.

I find the the superhero movies are getting better. There is still a strong potential for cheese, but let's hope they don't fuck this one up. Make it awesome, don't dumb it down, leave it wide open for a series of other movies (making the assumption that it was so awesome we'd want to see more), and start from the beginning- not in the middle. I want to see him get the ring, learn to use it, and do some incredible shit with it. And no cheese (did I already say that?).
Some good news for you: the film is covering Hal Jordan's origin story and is being made with plans for a trilogy in mind.

I am a huge GL fan, been reading from Emerald Eclipse to Blackest Night. Probably one of DC's most violent comic series.
I loved the look of Batman when he tried on a Green Lantern ring. He also looked badass when a yellow ring came upon him.
Not sure how the movie will be with Ryan Renolds as Hal Jordan. He would make a much better Kyle Raynor IMO. Will most likely see it anyways. WB has already said a sequel is in the works.

I want a red ring for when I drive on the freeway.....

I've only ever noticed Lantern in the compilation comics. Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Kingdom Come. He's probably one of the top 10 coolest DC heroes.

As for the movie, it's looking pretty good. Hopefully Ryan Reynolds can pull off a character as serious as him.

Also............this looks pretty cool.

I probably won't play it, but, it looks epic as hell.

Wow. That sounds horrible. Like something I would have done.

We'll see if they're still using the idea in ten years.

Green Lantern does have a tendency to feature villains themed around ripping out people's organs.

I actually thought that the film would be about Kyle Rayner when I first heard about Reynolds' role. I think he might be a good Hal Jordan, though.

And something tells me that a Red Lantern driving on a freeway wouldn't end too well.

It actually works surprisingly well. It looks like the idea's going to stick around for awhile; it's been the basis of the plot for about three or four years now.

Edit:
