I have noticed that the game market right now is very much into the whole gritty realism genre. Games like Halo, Bioshock, Mass effect, Half Life, Gears of war and others have become a minority. Nowadays the most common type of game is dark in colour, gritty and ultra realistic. In all honesty I actually find it hard to tell them apart sometimes, Call of Duty 4, Far cry 2, Battlefield 2 modern combat, Battlefield bad company, Medal of Honour airborne, Call of Duty 5 the list just goes on.
These game I always file under the 'all feel so similar might as well ignore them' list of mine. I guess it's because I DON'T like realism, I don't like lying prone shooting at Russians, Arabs or Nazis. I'm just so sick of this whole realism genre because as I said they all feel so SIMILAR that I fail to see the appeal.
When I play games I do it to jumpo into a fantastical world of fantasy, one where I am battling aliens or more likely befriending aliens. A wrold where I can totally survive charging right up to every enemy laughing and shooting like a madman.
I guess what I'm saying is that I find gritty realistic military shooters (with the exception of Gears of War) to be dull and depressing.
What's your opinion on gritty realism and further more what game do you think started this craze? (my bet is on the first Call of Duty)

Gritty realism is silly. If I wanted realism, I'd join the army and go shoot communist nazi alien zombie terroists for real. Or something.

I like gritty realism for instance COD 5 ( the russian campain) actually was very well written and shows how when the russians were abused in ww2 it wasnt right to turn the tables and start slaughtering germans

Are you implying that Gears of War is not "gritty and realistic"? It is the exact definition of that phrase.
EDIT: And Bad Company is the exact opposite of "Gritty and realistic". it takes 25-30 M16 bullets to kill someone in online.

E rates games are still the most common games, both in number of IPs and sales. I highly doubt any of those have gritty realism.

I prefer to keep my grit and my arcade separate. I play and love GRAW and R6, I also love most arcade-y shooters, they have separate little holes they fill in my heart.

As for which game started the gritty realism? I blame teh Haloz.
Dude no offence intended but in my own opinon the only way Halo could be less gritty and less realistic would be if your guns shot rainbows. As it is Halo remains one of the few shooters that I've found that has at least a slight sense of humour about itself, one of the reasons I love the franchise so much.

But if you think that, that's fine. Just saying what I think.

I've gotta say that compared to the cartoonish look that most video games have had and the sub par to terrible scripts that involve a very mediocre out look on good and evil and having life be so black and white, gritty realism in games is great. And BioShock is very gritty. Not realistic but gritty. Do you hear the sound you make when you tear ADAM out of the Little Sisters? Yeck!

Dude, Halo takes itself so seriously that it couldn't possibly take itself any more seriously than it already does.

Halo started the CONSOLE SHOOTER.

Console Shooter is almost always synonymous with gritty.

Those games may be gritty, but none of them are realistic. Arma, Red orchestra, AA, ins and a few others are realistic games. The games you listed are realistic in the same way a big budget summer action movie is realistic. The games I've listed are really as realistic as you can get in a game, that is before there is so much downtime in between action that it isn't a game anymore.

And as far as I'm concerned, I love games to be as slow, brutal, and realistic as possible. So I'll play my games, and you can play yours. That's not to say I don't like unrealistic games, I play cod4,cs,ut,f3 and so on. I just prefer realism focused titles.

I don't mind gritty and realistic, as long as the game is still fun. Some developers seem to have gone to such lengths to make it a dark, gritty game that they forget to keep it fun.

Yeah dude. Since when did blowing up nearly half of a building with a single shot from a grenade launcher, stabbing yourself in the chest with a needle to heal, breaking down entire doors with a swing of your knife, and smiley face grenades become realistic?

BF: BC knows it's a game. And that's what I love about it. I agree with you, though. Ultra gritty realism just becomes monotonous.

How is Battlefield: Bad Company gritty or realistic? You take a billion bullets to the head which are healed by a stab into you chest and the game is suppose to be funny. Also, Call of Duty 4 isn't that gritty. Even if it isn't the most colorful game around, Call of Duty 4 still has more colors then most games today.

Gritty realiam is wrong direction of gaming, we're not going to see many games like R:FOM, ratchet, or jak/daxter again

If i wanted to experience CoD, i'd watch the history channel and join USMC
If I wanted to experience GTA, i'd steal a car and drive over the first person i see

Maybe we should stop using the word "realistic" as an umbrella for 150 OTHER words meaning DIFFERENT things.

CoD is not realistic. It makes slight concessions to realism (limited player capacity for bullets and the like), but you're still Sgt. Super Hero killing armies almost by yourself, and damn, I'd be really happy if MY body could regenerate from injuries that easily. CoD is grittily serious, but it's not "realistic".

GTA is not "realistic". The games are set in familiar scenarios, and your opportunities as a player are made to resemble a real world, but hell, it's not realistic - although I have to admit I can't say anything about GTA IV, maybe they did "realistic", but I suppose they didn't change the Wanted mechanic a lot, so I guess "no".

I feel the same as you, TC. Which is why I found Mario Galaxy to be such a breath of fresh air. I'm sure the gritty realism/apocolyptic scenario thing will die with the FPS in the 10's.

The "craze", as far as my memory goes, was started with Delta Force. But I wouldn't call it a "craze". You said as many fantasy games as you said realistic ones, and I really do not believe that the proportions are bad. If you wanna be a space marine, there are enough games out there. If you want to be a simple marine, again enough games out there. For me, really, I prefer the realistic ones. The shoot me crazy serious sam type of games don't do it for me.
