No doubt. A lot of arguments here are hugely hyperbolic, additionally they are also quite anecdotal and selective to boot.

Yeah, but that's the Japanese for you.

Oh wait, were you talking about something else?
That doesn't really do anything aside from help make his point :|

I love it when people kneecap their own arguments. Too much of the Escapist community comes off as two steps away from calling anyone from Asia a *****

Go for it. I sadly never played Guility gear but I loved Blazblue and the japanese anime feel it had to it. The aesthetics are also brilliant and they have some pretty damn good gameplay, but please no more Noel buffing.

Yes, buff Lambda for me instead *evil laugh*. Is there a change list for CS Extend yet?

I really don't know how I feel about this thread. I largely have no opinion either way about what country a game came from. I know what games I want and which ones I will/won't buy. The genre affected my choice much more than anything else. I now have far too many RPGs which are skewing my library into decidedly Japanese (LOTS of Shin Megami Tensei, 2 Disgaea's, Agarest War, among others), but I'm waiting to get Mass Effect 3 and Skyrim. Multiplayer in BF3, Blazblue, and Assassin's Creed are eating up time I could be putting towards a single player story and an ending.

I went off topic. I've been largely ignorant of the sales flow of Japanese vs Western games (minus the juggernaut that is Call of Duty). Now that I think about it, I don't remember any recent bombshell announcements from Japan. It would be interesting to really see more culture from Japan in their games rather than some fantasy land again (much as I love them). I'm reminded of Shenmue and vaguely of Persona 4. There was one instance where you attend a festival and the girls are all wearing yukatas. It would have been interesting if that scene was expanded upon.
I agree that Japan has an iron grip over the fighting game department, but I feel that the genre will become over-saturated soon. Street Fighter 4, Street FighterxTekken, TekkenxStreet Fighter, BlazBlue CS (Extend), Persona: The Ultimate in Mayonaka, Arcana Heart 3, and Skull Girls. Half the list is Capcom, the other half is Arc System Works. Much as I love fighting games, I don't have time to learn the ones I want and play them competently while still being able to (attempt to) cut down my backlog. It's good that they're sticking to what they know, but they have to slow it down a bit.

Off topic again: Judging by the HUD, I think Persona will fell awfully similar to BlazBlue with similar "Heat" bars and a Burst Icon. I wanna see if Arc can make a game without a Burst function. It would force them to change their style and not allow combos that regularly go on for 10+ seconds.

Oh God no, A lambda buff? I will be in the nuclear shelter if anyone needs me although I doubt that will offer much protection.
As for a change list there this topic...

I would like to see more Japanese themed games as it can be a nice change from what I am used to. The fighting game genre is getting overcrowded so they may want to expand into different areas, although I agree using Japanese culture as part of the design and a selling point could work well.
Not sure what genre they could try though.

So, we need more weeaboo's dominating our culture? We need more of you copy paste tripe!? I think fucking not! I like Guilty Gear, I looooooove Blaz Blue,I will suck the immortal dick off of Okami! BUT NO! We don't need 90 more protagonists who are indistinguishable from each other and voiced by the same annoying mother fucker! GO AWAY FOR TEN MINUTES! RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE! It's not like western games are that much different, with every second character being a bald space marine.

I've only played one Guilty Gear game, and also Melty Blood, which is sorta similar. I was never a big fan. They felt too much like button mashers to me. However I've never been a big fan of any fighter that relies heavily on long combos. I also hate the aesthetics but I can't stand anime and anything that looks like it. I prefer the visuals in SF3: 3rd Strike as far as 2D goes, a bit less on the anime overload.
My favorite fighting game is still Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike. I am trying really hard to get into and like Street Fighter IV but the game doesn't make it easy.

Daisuke Ishiwatari, never stop being cool. Nothing out of the west could ever match the uniqueness of your fighters.

I'm sorry guys, but I used to live in Japan, and you will find few bigger history and cultural buffs for Japan than I, but that's what I am, a cultural buff, not some anime freak. I find it insanely insulting when people claim they love Japanese culture and follow it up by spouting out an anime name! It makes us look like retards!
All this idiotic anime shit has to go, it's children's cartoons that try to be big boy stories and the absolute worship people put into it makes wallpapering my room with Spongebob posters seem mature! (don't get me wrong, I'm not saying liking anime is immature, but the amount of attention we give to it, and more specifically the ones we make popular are in fact immature. Seriously, Dragon Ball Z!? Why the hell do I keep buying those games! I can't stop!)
How about when we see more "japanised" games we see more stylishness, like Okami, or more artistic story telling. How awesome would it be to have a Kabuki style game?
For that matter how awesome would it be to have a game's story delivered through opera?
more weeaboo's dominating our culture?

The bias of your above post seems to suggest otherwise, in fact one could say you seem to have a fixation on anime (you know what they say, Love and hate are intimately linked within the human brain). To relieve your stress I would suggest going full on Otaku, indulge in all that you feel is wrong, pepper your wall with moe wall scrolls and buy NIS America's full library, in the end its what you truly want.

On Topic: I would agree, most of the games that I enjoy these days coming out of Japan scoff at Western tropes and styles, games like Rune Factory and Neptunia are laughed at by Western reviewers but I can't get enough of them.

While I do enjoy games from both the West and Japan, I find the comment about making games that Western developers can't sort of bizzare. If these games were only being released in Japan then fair enough, hard to emulate what you don't know, but with the other comment of wanting to approach the world market with these games it becomes somewhat counterintuitive. If anything the thing you would want is for people to play your games, like them, and draw inspiration from them or use them as the jumping off point for their own games. Sure they won't have the same access to the culture that the original games were made in, but so long as one broadens their horizons in both games and culture then they shouldn't have a problem. I can understand the worry that if we (the West) emulate their games well enough that we don't bother looking at what's being made in Japan, and as such Japanese developers have to work around these new issues rather than do what they want, but in the long run I don't buy that argument. If you want to keep up then just make games that people like to play and enjoy, it doesn't matter what design style you're going by so long as those who play it enjoy and start to follow the individual developer(s) rather than dividing it into an East and West thing.

Good, please don't. You can't swing a dead cat over here without knocking over a pile of shovel-ware shooters and platforms like Steam are just dripping with half-baked RTSs. There's enough of that garbage already, spend your time and money to make something at least slightly different.

He really does sound like one of those closeted, over-compensating, southern gay guys trying desperately to repress their urges by violently attacking the objects of their repressed affection until they explode, except, ya know, with anime and stuff.

Also, you liked Neptunia? Yeesh. I do have almost the entire NIS library and that game was unenjoyable enough to make me appreciate my time with FF13 a bit more.

I, for once, welcome a Japanese developer that is "we have a lot in our culture to explore in games", instead of "what can we do to appeal to the west".

Seriously, if there is one thing more off to Westerners than Japanese culture, is Japaneses trying to emulate Westerners sensibilities.

Weaboos are dominating our culture? Do you know how many times I've said that word and then had to explain in full what a "weaboo" even is?

Are you some kind of clod? He didn't say "LETS OVERFLOW THE WORLD WITH ANIME CLOOOOOONESS YYEEEAAAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!1!1" He said he wants to focus on getting more of actual Japanese culture out there. Look at what you're saying: "DERP I'm a REAL culture buff WHEEEEE" and look at what he's saying: "We need to get REAL culture out there". He didn't even suggest he wanted to emulate anime in ANY way. He could very well mean what you were suggesting, by using Japanese history as a jump off point for video game concepts, OR he could mean doing things the way Japan is known to do them, through innovation unlike anything we've seen.

So calm down with the tirades; you're making yourself seem like a quasi-xenophobic ass.

More games that focus on Japanese culture?

*looks at Okami avatar*

I can get behind something like that.

Let's get one thing straight, I hate shitty Japanese androgynous angst, ala Final Fantasy 13, terrible characters, terrible story telling.

But if we get more games like Okami?

I'll put up with all the crap.

I thought Japanese culture was the reason western games are gaining in popularity. I mean... how many 2D fighters can you play before you get eye strain from all the flashing lights and realize you're just playing a pachinko machine with breasts bouncing on it somewhere?
I thought that was the reason Japanese games sold. >.>

I kid, but I'm not sure "Unique 2D fighters" is the way to go here.

Though I would love to see some more actually unique titles come out. Even niche games seem to be getting more cookie cutter.
