ehh I had to use cheats I couldn't beat it any other way
and even using cheats on hard mode (which is the mode I was on) is still really freaking hard

I had an enormous problem with Episode 2 to the point where I couldn't even finish the game. See, the game starts and you shoot a bunch of zombies, antlions and combine and then I reach a point where I'm like "Jesus, I've done this already I'd rather spend my time nose picking or learning how to yodel than spend another damn second killing the same crap and doing the same boring puzzles".

Yeah, run over the Hunters in the car, and take out the Striders using the Magnusson device - that can get a bit tricky, especially if you've got rubbish aim - like myself. What I tended to do was run into a house and when the Strider bent down to look in, shoot one on it then. Also, I found it useful to always keep one hooked on the back of the car, so that if you're cut off by one you can hop out the car and use it.
If you want healing, go towards the houses nearest the base. Because the Striders come from the far end of the map, you'll be spending a lot of time up there. Then again I say that, I did end up trying to fight off three which were all uncomfortably close to the base...

Though how on earth you could do it without any of the buildings being destroyed, I'll never know. Within the first minute or something, that first house is already destroyed...

Essentially, you need to be quick and keep your fingers crossed for accurate aim.
Gotta be one of the scariest 15-20 minutes of my life...

I did that too. I swear the last part of the game is the least fun than the rest of it... and I love Valve with a passion.
Really? I love that part. Especially when things go wrong and you start feeling the pressure of whether you'll make it or not.
Me too, the last Strider I killed was literally just about to blow up the base - I felt an immense sense of relief when I found that that was the last one. It's an ace ending.
If you listen to the commentary in the game, they designed it pretty well to put you in that situation.

As for strategies, they've been well covered already. Again, I recommend circling the base before you go to the mill to stock up, then do it again between each round - you have just enough time before the new strider appears. Make sure you put a Magnusson Device on your car. Another option might be to go to each area and pull out a heap of MDs and prep the place with them all around so you have a huge supply available, without waiting for new ones to come during the fight.

During the individual rounds, use your car to take out the Hunters - they can dodge, so it's hard sometimes, but run one over, drive off a little, then come back for the other - that seems to make it easier - try side swiping them instead of a direct hit. Use lighter weapons to clean them up first, and save the rockets and those bouncing pellet things for later. Grenades are pretty useless unless you're really fucking awesome with them, and sniping with the crossbow works too if you can get a clean shot on the buggers.

Always get rid of the Hunters first, because their job first and foremost is to shoot the Magnusson - I found this out during my third playthrough while experimenting with the notarget and noclip cheats to zoom around the battlefield and pwn them for fun - they don't shoot at you, but they do at the MD!

Once the Hunter's down, you know the rest. Use the light guns to shoot at the MD. Between rounds, collect more ammo and health, grab a new MD. Same goes before the final round, too - you have plenty of time.

For the final round, the situation is the same. Try and take out the first two Striders quick - the one from the cranes and the water tower. Try and ram the Hunters first, then just jump out and use pellets or rockets to clean house quickly. Kill the hunters. Hopefully you'll now have time to zip off to the next one, but if you're slow you may wish to head back to the central area where you have the two MD machines (one in the building, one standalone) on the right of the field, facing the base (though some play vids I've seen have the game flipped, so maybe the left for you?) and get heaps of MDs (which you hopefully prepared!) and in you go. Same strats as before - ram Hunter with car, clean house with hardcore weapons, MD, BOOM.

And keep trying - and don't resort to cheats until you know you can do it without them - you lose most of your satisfaction and you will be lame!

Wow was reading back through the comments, now it all makes sense I would always reload whenever a house was destroyed... Alright this might be a little easier

They made the final battle hard for a reason, to make you keep trying and trying and trying.

Thus they'd have the 25 years necessary to produce Episode 3.

For the Finale, drive over the Hunters with your car, they die instantly, then throw the Magnussan Device at the Striders.

First of all. Quick save is your friend! Everytime you kill a strider you quick save. DO NOT quick save unless your near a strider dead or alive (because you can screw it all up) what I did is ignore the hunters. You can run back and forth, running them over sometimes, but mostly focus on the striders. Practice parking at a device despenser so you can grab and go.

Do I know what I'm talking about?

I think the best idea is to kill the hunters, and then the striders with the Magnusson devices. For the hunters, use combine balls or throw logs with the gravity gun.
