After having played Team Fortress 2 Beta for about three hours of my life (seems great so far) I looked back at when the game was released. I mean, 2007? Wow. I don't know any game that's had so much support over the years and it's amazing how much dedication is put into it. I legitimately cannot name one other game which has had so much replay value for me. Three years... It's a long time. It's taken Valve three years to get up to this point in TF2, tripling the amount of weapons, it's taken Valve three years to make Portal 2, an entirely new game, and it's taking MORE THAN THREE YEARS FOR THEM TO MAKE HALF-LIFE 2: EPISODE 3.
Now I know this has been the butt of the joke for a long time now and I know that we're all anticipating it, but let's actually speculate as to why and how it will be released.
The most basic reason as to why it's taking so long is just making it a huge game. But that doesn't seem likely. They've already created all the models, the engine, the mechanics and the weapons, so I'm skeptical. What else could it be? Valve is spending too much time on other games? No, definitely not. Simply because there's presumably a division of the company dedicated to making it. They're not going to throw people around in different departments just to screw us over. Maybe they're waiting to release it in a package like 'Orange Box 2', featuring Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2, etc. But it seems pointless, considering how heavy their fanbase already is. So what could it be?
Maybe... Just maybe... MAYBE... They're making a new engine. I mean the Source engine is pretty dated and I often hear the complaint that Valve games look sub-par. Well personally, I think they look great. Simplistic, not hyper-realistic, just good enough for what they're doing. Makes it a lot easier on my computer, too. But it would make sense. I mean it's been used since 2004 with CSS and it's about time they updated. Eehh, just speculation. Just a guess.
What's your ideas?
