After having played Team Fortress 2 Beta for about three hours of my life (seems great so far) I looked back at when the game was released. I mean, 2007? Wow. I don't know any game that's had so much support over the years and it's amazing how much dedication is put into it. I legitimately cannot name one other game which has had so much replay value for me. Three years... It's a long time. It's taken Valve three years to get up to this point in TF2, tripling the amount of weapons, it's taken Valve three years to make Portal 2, an entirely new game, and it's taking MORE THAN THREE YEARS FOR THEM TO MAKE HALF-LIFE 2: EPISODE 3.

Now I know this has been the butt of the joke for a long time now and I know that we're all anticipating it, but let's actually speculate as to why and how it will be released.

The most basic reason as to why it's taking so long is just making it a huge game. But that doesn't seem likely. They've already created all the models, the engine, the mechanics and the weapons, so I'm skeptical. What else could it be? Valve is spending too much time on other games? No, definitely not. Simply because there's presumably a division of the company dedicated to making it. They're not going to throw people around in different departments just to screw us over. Maybe they're waiting to release it in a package like 'Orange Box 2', featuring Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2, etc. But it seems pointless, considering how heavy their fanbase already is. So what could it be?

Maybe... Just maybe... MAYBE... They're making a new engine. I mean the Source engine is pretty dated and I often hear the complaint that Valve games look sub-par. Well personally, I think they look great. Simplistic, not hyper-realistic, just good enough for what they're doing. Makes it a lot easier on my computer, too. But it would make sense. I mean it's been used since 2004 with CSS and it's about time they updated. Eehh, just speculation. Just a guess.

What's your ideas?

I think that they follow the Pixar formula: Don't make a sequel unless your ideas for it are better than the previous installment.
Which is both good and bad.
Good: We get quality and lots of it.
Bad: We have to wait a damn long time.
But I'm willing to wait if it means getting good games out of it. Hell, more people should follow this formula.

Valve games only look sub-par now because the maps are outdated..i have seen pics of the current source engine with highly detailed maps and they look wonderful.

Case in point:

http://www.moddb.com/mods/dear-esther/images/dear-esther-caves109#imagebox

Although i admit...they do need wind/cloth physics and better lighting/muticore elements.

But Cloth physics is already being added in DOTA2 so i bet it will appear in portal 2 as well.

So they don't need a new engine just need to drop dx8 support and add in more of the things newer engines have. After all a Source2 engine would have to be coded completely from scratch and Valve made source to not have to do that in the first place.

You guys are aware that valve has said that episode 3 will be a full game along the lines of hl2 and not a 6 hour episode, right?

I still can't believe you people would be happy with anything short of a full on sequel at this point.

Half Life 3 FTW.

EDIT: Hey! Awesome ninja!

I have heard rumours that they're making a new Source engine, but they're just that, rumours. Honestly, I'd bet my money on either

A) It's going to be the same length as Half Life 2 (or longer)
B) They're working on a kickass marketing campaign so that people I know won't just stare blankly at me if I ask them if they've heard of Half Life.
C) They're trying to write the best story in existance.
D) They HAVE written the best story in existance, and must build blast doors and reinforced walls to protect against the onslaught of gamers screaming like Justin Bieber fans.

Alright, the last one's a joke, but I don't think they'd be making a new engine from scratch, they may be improving on the source engine, but not rewriting it.

Not that I'd be complaining if they were making a new engine. :D

It's probably not because it's huge. It's because they want high quality. You have no idea just how much stuff they throw in a bin. Characters, levels, entire subplots. Half-Life is still their most well-known franchise, their flagship, they don't want to fuck it up.

i'd rather wait longer for a great sequel then have them fart out some piece of crap in a year or 2

really? if thats true then that would be awsome! as good as episode 3 could be its a little annoying waiting and anticipating all that time just for a short episode

Let us wait for a little longer. So they can tweak/nerv it and stuff.
and then make us cry like little girls because it is truly awesome.

instead of making it come out now, and make us go, meh pretty good.

We should just stop complaining. Valve will know that they've lost their puppy-eyed fans. Then they'll reconsider what to do.

Besides, Gabe was working on some new ideas for Episode 3, he's still working them out. If we want them to rush things it'll be like Episode One. We don't want it to be a 'meh' game, would we?

If it has replay value, then replay it. You should be happy with what Valve gave you. Portal 2 is nice, too. Episode 3 probably has some other enviromental design like that Aperture Science ship.

The thing is, playing HL2 even now the game feels a bit dated in it smechanics and look (to me anyway). The only way I see them making a great, up-to date Half Life now is building a new game from scratch.

well, the new mechanics thing had been said enough so .. :). and with tweak i meant tweak the bits and bolts that currently is Halflife 3. not take halflife 2 ep 2 and add stuff.

Eurogamer: Why did you change the name from Aftermath? We liked the name.

Gabe Newell: Errr... I... I think that Aftermath was almost a temporary name. I always thought of it as Episodes One through Three because that's how we planned the products out. I think people thought we'd need a name for them, and Aftermath ended up being more confusing than helpful.

Probably a better name for it would have been Half Life 3: Episode One, but these three are what we're doing as our way of taking the next step forward, but Half-Life 2 was the name we used.
The episodes are Half Life 3, they just made them episodes as not to have a long development cycle, a lot of good that turned out to be lol. As for Episode 3, perhaps they will wait till some time after Portal 2 is out to announce something as not to steal its thunder, they'll need to throw us a bone sometime right?
