I just found out about and downloaded [http://www.moddb.com/mods/research-and-development] this Half Life 2 mod[footnote]You need Half Life 2: Episode 2 to play it.[/footnote]. It's essentially just the puzzle elements of Half Life but with no combat. So far it's pretty damn cool. All the puzzles are original too - The guy who made the mod really put some thought into it.

R&D's hook is that it's essentially non-combative. Yep - you go without guns throughout (bar the ol' Gravity jobbie, but hey, that's more about construction than destruction here). Sure, you can tell an Antlion to claw someone to death or arrange to squash men with falling girders, but you're definitely not Edward Pistolhands. It's an environmental adventure game, taking the irregular physics and logic puzzles seen in HL2 itself and turning them into the game itself. Mazes, gravity, exploding microwaves and fire-retardant antlion carapaces all make an appearance - it's very much a point'n'click adventure in an FPS engine.
[HEADING=1]It looks nice too and it's free![/HEADING]

Hmmm, I might get this, although I'll need to get the Orange Box on steam to download it.
The Orange Box is ?30 or about £20-25. For what you get it's well worth it in my opinion.

You misunderstand me, I bought it on the xbox and on pc, but as a disc, and now my disc drive won't work and I sold the 360 version on for a £10 profit, so I need to re-buy it.

You don't need the discs. As long as you have the games registered on Steam you can download the games via Steam without the discs.

And thanks for finding this mod! Seems quite interesting, off to download it. ^^

Ah I see. In that case you should get a new disc drive if you already have it on PC. Two birds with the one stone as they say. Try adding the registration code to steam if you can. If you already installed it you can re-download.

That could work, and I did look briefly at them, but I trust you more than the rest of the internet, so are there any that you would suggest?

I don't think I ever registered them on steam, and I've never even played them on my laptop (where the disc drive won't work).

Holy crap, I just realized that I could use this to put all of my games on.

Thank you muchly, good sir.

Well if you never registered it on Steam all you need is the CD-Key that came with the Orange Box. Make an account and register the CD-Key. Then all the games will show up so you can download.

It is a laptop you speak of. That is troubling. What make is it?

Here [http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DVDRW-External-SE-S224Q-EUBN-Boxed-L-Scribe_W0QQitemZ310191186608QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_LaptopAccessories_LaptopDrives?hash=item4838d5e2b0] is an external one. I'm not too sure how to replace a laptop DVD drive. Youtube/Google is your friend.

'Tis an acer aspire 6930G, but the warranty is still active, so I'll see what they can do before nullifying it by doing it myself.

Looks pretty damn fun but I don't have Orange Box on PC. I do have everything but the episodes on it however and I'm not real keen on buying another copy of the episodes just for a mod.

Side note though, can anyone recommend some great single player HL2 mods? Preferably those of a puzzle bent?
