So tell me how much you learned about The Old Republic and the rise of the Empire simply by watching the original Star Wars trilogy.

There's nothing wrong with a self-contained story that takes place within a larger universe, without mapping out every little thing. The Halo trilogy is the story of how John-117 prevented the obliteration of all life in the universe. ODST is the story of some marines dropped into an alien occupied city. How humanity came to be at war with the Covenant, how the Forerunners built the rings, how the flood came to exist... these things are not pertinent to the matter at hand.
I appreciate the ability to tell stories this way. Movies, games, even books that crowbar in a lot of worthless information to fulfil a sense of completeness on the part of the storyteller are generally quite poor.

Assuming that vehicles and weapons don't count, I'm torn between the energy sword, sentinel beam, Dual SMGs, dual pistols, and the halo 1 pistol.

I suppose I'd choose the energy sword (or maybe the sentinel beam... Goddamit) if we had replenishing ammunition, but the halo 1 pistol if we didn't as I could probably find similar, if not matching, bullets for in in real life.

You're right, but I'm saying there are bits in Halo 3 for example that don't really make sense unless you do have this background knowledge, like that bit about "John 117". How am I supposed to know about that when he's always called master chief, or did I miss something in the games. Star Wars is different in that it works as a stand alone story without all the lore etc behind it.

I haven't read any supplementary Halo material and I know that. I'm sure it's mentioned in the first game.
And even if it wasn't, it's not really something you need to know, unless you got to the end of Halo 3 and wondered why '117' was scratched into the memorial.

Hell, i played only 3 games of halo today for the first time in months and i got 6 kills in a row with the same needler, that wording came outta my mouth accidentally after each kill for the last three. Seriously, i agree with that youtube video quote

Halo games work as a standalone story. They refer to Master Chief as 'Sierra 117' on the...4th(?) mission and it's easy to tell who they're talking about (Sierra=S=Spartan, obviously) so I don't really see what the issue is.

Don't forget the self adjusting scope that always shows exactly where the bullet will hit. The scope does all the work, it's awesome.
