This could have been a great game - it still looks very good graphically and I love the setting, but the gameplay looks like complete crap. I wasn't even sure where it was set - I was under the impression that it was in Dover, but you say Germanic enemies, so I guess it must be Dover having been taken by Saxon raiders or something and then the Romans are for some reason trying to launch D-day against the British Isles.

And since when did the Germanic tribes build... multi-layered stone fortresses?

Was that a trebuchet in that tower? Why did every single legionnaire look copy pasted? Why were the shields so small? Why would they engage archers with pila? Where were they keeping them? Why would they all spread out immediately after disembarking when their army was designed to fight in formation (some general you turned out to be!)?

Gears of Rome... could have been so much better than that QTE mess.
Folks after my own heart. When did the germanii start building stone fortresses?

Why do game designers think that everybody after 1 A.D. had trebuchet? Why do game designers think that catapult shots were missiles? It took literally thousands of stones to bring down a wall or tower. Thousands over the course of months.

Or the horrible voice over at the beginning... my god. Yes, Rome was definitely known for its freedom...

Also why is Ryse misspelled?
They certainly did have freedoms... if you were a land-owning male Roman who had performed 20 years of military serivice.

Everyone else? Not so much... but you're not fighting for THEIR freedom, you're fighting for YOUR freedom.

It's probably trying to be cRYSEtek or something.

Woo, another hacky-slashy god of war wannabe. Where's the option to command a centry of troops, paying attention to your soldiers state of fatigue and signaling when to make the risky front line rotation? A "General" leading his troops in melee? How absurd. People been watching too much Gladiator and thinking it's a reflection of Rome.

No thanks, I'll wait until the PC Exclusive Rome 2: Total War available on Steam with all its modding support and more playable factions than just "Dude in a frilly red hat".

the design intent wasn't for combat to be like a quick-time event.
Really? Because it seems like they designed the entire combat system around QTEs...and apparently it's not even "Press X To Not Die", but rather it's "Press Any Key To Continue."

i find it hilariously fitting that a launch title for the xbone is about a bloated empire that brought about its own end.
Sweet, delicious irony! +1 everything to you for pointing it out. Sadly, the Roman Empire limped on for many years before finally collapsing; the same could be true of microsoft.

Anywho, the gameplay reminds me of that dull Space Marine game (the warhammer 40k one). So, yeah, if killer apps where what microsoft where planning to woo us with, I remain unconvinced. Sticking with my beautiful, controlled by me PC - and if you Microsoft fools try to take that from me, I know how to use Linux, and I'm not afraid to use it.

Now, I'm no military strategist, so maybe I'm missing something, but when approaching the archers with their seemingly infallible shield wall technique, why did they suddenly ditch that tactic half way there and expose themselves in order to hurl their spears? Wouldn't it have been more prudent to continue in the same vein until they got close enough to render their enemy's arrows useless and proceed to cut them down with the most deadly weapon at the Roman's disposal: the QTE?

Still, it often turns out the earliest games out the door at the start of a generation are hardly the most spectacular, for the most part.

Very good looking game but the QTEs in every fight are just too much. I like my combat visceral but I prefer having more control over it. Besides, I wasn't big on the Xbox One to begin with so this doesn't feel like a loss.

I'd just like to point out that expecting historical accuracy from an action game is probably asking too much.

Now expecting enjoyable gameplay, on the other hand...

I've had my fill and more of GoW clones.

The difference between this and Space Marine is that Space Marine was reflective of the setting... it was actually pretty fun and didn't invole QTEs all over the place.

Looks uninteresting.

Up until they had the part where you can command a formation, that looked pretty interesting!
Though it's probably less fun than it could be.
And you probably hardly ever use it.

Despite that was the reason Rome was so good as killing.
Formations and tactics.

Oh so that's what it looks like. For some reason I was under the impression that it was going to be a first person melee combat game, maybe because of all the references to Saving Private Ryan's D-Day scene I've been seeing in regards to the demo. Combine that with the idea that the combat was like Arkham Aslyum (which isn't interesting in any game that's tried it outside of the Arkham games honestly), I was a little curious about how it'd work. That's all out the window now, I am decidedly less interested.

Not to mention the gladius: well known for its use as a slashing sword. Or the horrible voice over at the beginning... my god. Yes, Rome was definitely known for its freedom...

Also why is Ryse misspelled?
Also, why did they throw three of the exact same spears at the enemy? A Roman Legionary would have only had 2 pila, and the weren't uniform, mostly because the legionaries would have made them themselves.

And like others have said, I'd love to see the Germanic tribe that managed to build a medieval castle complete with catapults..... right next to the ocean. No offense to any Germanic tribesmen out there, but they were mostly still trying to make wooden walls. If this were made by a Greeks/Egyptians/Any other civilization south of Germany, Gaul, Britain, I would be willing to believe they would make a castle.

I don't get what the point is of the Google Glass tips. Couldn't you just put those tips on the actual screen? Why give only players with Glass access to the game's full tutorial and objectives?

Oh, but I know, we have to make the Glass early adopters feel THPECIAL. So let's slap a Gamefaqs entry on our game that only players with Glass can see. IT'S AUGMENTED!

Yo dawg we heard you like computer-simulated realities, etc.

That's the other thing I was thinking... the ships? What part of the Germanic tribes borders the Medditeranian?

Why would the Romans have engaged in such a pointless assault effort by just throwing men at walls? They would have landed miles away, formed up, built a stockade, unpacked ballista and catapaults, crafted some rams, marched within a mile of the walls then started a siege - not an assault!

I'm so disappointed in this game, it could have introduced mechanics we haven't seen - more of that formation fighting and less "I wanna be a gladiator, I wanna live a life of danger, I don't wanna get raped by strangers".

It seems like a cool game. Great setting amazing graphics but it feels empty like it doesn't even have a soul.

So, is there an actual game in there somewhere? Or is it one giant quick time event historically inaccurate movie?

Xbone exclusive? They can keep it. Looks like shite.

Yup, this is me as well. I could barely watch the reveal during the conference as I was shaking my head to much and hiding my eyes from all of the inaccuracies I saw. I stopped watching at them swinging a spatha (assuming it's not a gladius). Sigh.

However, Rome 2 I am waiting for. I'm sure another history-friendly mod will appear once I'm done with the vanilla campaign. Modders make these games great.
