"Hardcore" gamers are hipsters.

I think that to be honest, the industry is to blame, take a look at Bioware for instance.

Once renowned RPG developer, years per project, and they end up with...

Origins -> Dragon Age 2

Dragon Age 2 could've been a gem but in a way I'm glad it's getting the criticism it deserves and hopefully it should push them back on track.

I've been playing Games for almost my Entire life, but I've been playing FaceBook games since I found it, and I often play Casual games (Tetris, Bejewled, Plants vs. Zombies, Hidden Objects, ect, ect), So I wouldn't Classify myself as a "HardCore" gamer, I don't even like most Shooters/Harcore games anyway, I prefer staying up 'till 3:45 AM milking cows and Searching for Mystical Fire Birds so they'll give my Shovel an Upgrade.

And besides, Casual Games are making more Money and Profit than Hard-Core Games.

Someone plays bejewlied or whatnot and they learn the basics of gaming. they then try a more complicated game. then continue on untill they can play most games
I figured that'd be the viewpoint of many people who aren't bothered by 'casual' games. I don't really agree unless the audience we're referring to is quite young (not even a teen, maybe even younger) and I think the 'casual' game target audiences are actually focused less on children and more on bored middle-aged folk who have never touched a game before in their life.

I just don't find myself thinking that after a few rounds of Farmville someone is going to move on to playing more innovative, interesting games.

I don't really respect games like Farmville in general, as they seem to be the scary side of games, where people are just killing time without really having fun and they think that's what games are.

Oh! That said, if Plants vs. Zombies is counted a casual game then I have a totally different opinion about it, very fun game IMO.

That's why we(me, at least) hard-core gamers are afraid of casual games dominating the industry, because simplistic games that anyone can play can be spread across a much larger audience than deep games than only certain people would play.

The majority of "Gamers" these days start with Call of Duty, and end with Call of Duty.

Maybe it is that way because, Idunno, when I started playing games i was 4! would I be allowed to play a game like medal of honor at 4? NO.

When the PS2 came out I played teen games, because I was like 9 or 10.

If you are an actual gamer, you progressed through titles your supior allowed.

Games like Farmville are not games, they are apps. They don't ruin the industry, they just blind it.

I'm alright if a person is a casual gamer and plays little casual games like Uno or whatever.
I do occasionally.

Just as long as a Farmville player doesn't think they are a gamer.

Well they are whether you admit or not Farmville is a game and the people who play it are gamers so just shut up and live with it.
Umad? (sorry about that last statement, needed to be said.) But anyway, tell me how moving an avatar around and waiting 3 days for crops to grow is a game? staring at a blank computer screen and rapidly clicking is more of a game than that. Heck, runescape farming was more fun than farmville. Why such hostility just because I don't concider people who "Hardcore" play farmville gamers?

Hipsters: You haven't played Portal? Pfft and you call yourself a gamer.

"Hardcore" Gamers: You haven't played Portal? You should, it's awesome. Here, borrow mine!

That about sums up my argument.

I love games, I have loved games for the entire 21 years I have lived, or at least for as long as I remember. I don't like the "new wave" of casuals because a larger portion of games are getting easier and shorter, there aren't many challenging games around outside of the indie or JRPG genres and lets not even talk about FFXIII.
What I will say that I "hate" is when the casual gamers stereotype ME for playing difficult games. Guess what, we're giving what we have received for our entire lives. YOU ridiculed US for generations, and NOW you're going to traipse on our lawn, change the way we organised our ornaments and you're now bitching at us for liking things the way they were.
I still love games regardless. Does that make me a "hipster?" I don't think so and I think you're generalizing. Get a life and stop looking for a fight.
I couldn't have said it better.

I don't hate casual games or casual gamers.

I just am afraid because casual games make so much more money than AAA titles and the kinds of games that I like that in, oh, 25 years or so, the only games that will be made are casual titles because everything else doesn't make as much money.

If you mean "hipster" in the same meaning as "arrogant asshole" I'd say you have a point.

Some are that way, some aren't. The worst gamers, though, are still the foul mouthed little kids playing games that their parents bought for them to shut them up, who spew out language most of them don't understand.

This! For the love of god this.

It's nothing to do with hating casual gamers, as this gentleman said, it's what they mean for the industry. It's an increased likelihood of devs settling for "safe" games that are assured to rake in the profit rather than creating games that actually innovate, that actually make us feel and think.

When a company that used to innovate turns round and decides to milk the crap out of the last success story it put out, it's a dark turn for the industry.
When making "safe" and "bland" games that can be marketed to anyone due to brand familiarity is the primary goal over innovation and design, that's when the red flag should go up and a company should go back to the drawing board.

Again, as stated above, we're a demographic who so desperately wants to see our medium turned into an art form due to the nature of some of the finest works in the industry, works that do make us think and feel things, yet the growing number of people who only want these cookie cutter sequels signifies that our medium will never rise above that of the Michael Bays of the film world...

And that, that is depressing. If that really makes me a hipster, then so be it. I don't hate casual gamers, I welcome new people into the medium with open arms, hell, I'm even giving my 360 to my mum so she can get into gaming!
Well said! Developers..innovate dammit...don't be stooping to the lowest common denominator. You are embarrassing yourselves.

Perhaps it's your definition of 'casual gamer' that's the issue. When I think of a casual gamer I imagine my sister who occasionally plays New Super Mario Bros. if she has nothing else to do. When I define a casual gamer, it's someone for whom games are not a primary hobby. I don't believe 'hardcore' is the right title to give to people who have games as their main hobby, we're just gamers. There is no 'hardcore' and 'casual'. There are people for whom games are their main hobby or favourite thing to do and there are people who will play one if they feel like it once in a blue moon. There are gamers and non-gamers.
