Ikaruga for the gamecube is probably the hardest game I have personally played. Muchos fun but trying to swap between bullet types on the later levels is just pain. Pure pain.

Heh, well my contribution was a very small audience, it was called Steel Batallion made by Capcom. There were only like 10,000 copies worldwide it came with a gigantic Dual joystick controller with pedals and over 40 buttons. I got mine and i tried to play it everynight for 2 years, the game drove me literally nuts, i ended up selling it for 50 more then i paid.

I still get chills when i think of that game it was amazing, but wow, insanely hard.

Demon's Souls is mightily hard, but mightily satisfying. Ohhhhh, to hear the deafening thump of a mighty dragon with 2 harpoons in its eyes falling to it's death after dieing 20 times myself at it's claws is oh so satisfying
The key to this game is APPLIED KNOWLEDGE. Except when it comes to King Doran, that cheating son of a *****.

i would have to say star ocean:till the end of time.....the battle system put you in a position that if you didn't have 100% focus on what you need to do you were gone... not to mention the chain system... once you were to a certain point in that game if you didn't keep your chain up it would take forever to lvl and move on ....god i love that game
One of my fave games ever! I love all the Star Ocean games, tbh though, I enjoy level grinding so that was never an issue for me.

i want to be the guy, i really dont need to explain why. i was crying in 5 seconds of the first level. XD
I Want To Be The Guy is perhaps the hardest game I have ever played. And I have beaten Battletoads on NES and Gameboy.
OK, IWBTG is our-concuour, hardest game of all. It even got it's own article at this week's issue? http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_230/6835-The-Pains-of-Being-The-Guy

But BESIDES that... what else?

Now that's a nice list. just NES games (some are multiplatform). I wonder why I'm not surprised...

Zombies Ate My Neighbors...42+ levels...The last 22 or so being insanely difficult...Sure it has password saves every 4 levels but it doesn't save your items...And if you go into the final boss without max rocket launchers, holy crosses, and Pandora's Boxes you are screwed...Even with all of those you will still probably die...

I have never gotten past level 20 playing normally...Must play the game after final projects are done...Still an awesome game though...Co-Op ROCKS!

Man, could you at least read the original post before doing it?

688 Hunter/Killer.

An old submarine PC game. It had about 6,000 buttons and levers and didn't tell you what to do.

Basically a "Play with a submarine and you may eventually do something right." simulator.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising on the hardest difficulty. I usually hate the HUD in most FPS games, but I really need it in OFDR.

Probably Desert bus i have not played it but if someone were to torture me to find out where i had hidden my pop tarts i would forfeit within seconds of this method due to my lack of a large attention span no i can go 3 seconds without unloading a full chamber into a opponets face then be forced to T-bag their corpse but I hate when games drone on and on and on

Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter.

Difficulty:
Type: Co-Op
Base Difficulty: Mental
Max Players: 16
No Respawns
No Ammo
No Health
Weapons stay after being picked up: No
Extra enemy Heath: 400%
Extra enemy health per player: 200%
Friendly Fire: Yes
Extra multiplayer enemies

I reckon it would be impossible tbh, but it does offer a 103x score multiplier if anyone does get lucky.

Done. Still not convinced this is at all new.

You basically took, "Tell me what you think the hardest game ever is (and, it is implied, you are free to elaborate as to why)" and replaced it with "When considering games and why they are hard for you, elaborate what you think the hardest game ever is and elaborate as to why."

The first sign should have been when the type of replies you received looked identical.

Personally, the answer isn't all that simple for me. "Hardness" comes in many flavors, and some are more legitimate than others in my book. If you can beat a game only by memorizing patterns of where the bad guys are going to spawn, I'm not sure I'd call that gaming skill so much as memorization skill. Most "hard" games (like I Want To Be The Guy or insane smups) fall into this category, but I'd call that "faux hardness."

I think the real hard games are the ones that really make you think deeply and don't give you patterns to memorize. Perhaps getting the Amulet of Yendor in Nethack.
