Sorry, I made an error. I meant grandfather, not mother. You could have merely stated that I made an error rather than attempting to undermine my intelligence.

I shall change my post, if it bothers you so.
Sorry if you thought that I was trying to undermine your intelligence. I was just assuming the worst; that you didn't read the article and just had an horrible knee jerk reaction.

That being said, the grandfather didn't put blame on the game either.

"Anthony was playing ... on PlayStation when his friend came and stabbed him," said the boy's distraught grandfather, Antonio Juela, 59. "My grandson died over a video game."
How is that blaming the game? He is just putting things in context. They were playing a game, got into an argument over it, and a bastard knifed an innocent kid. He is just pointing out how silly it is to get killed over a game.

To see this as some kind of a subtle way to attack games is just putting words in someone's mouth.
When I posted it I was meaning that it was giving people ammunition to use against gaming. Tabloids don't give a crap about putting words in people's mouths or quoting wildly out of context, so long as it gets them some extra copies off the shelves.

And you tell us all that on the thread about a story where no one is blaming video game violence for what happened?

And seriously:
As I said before the last elections, as a gamer be careful who you vote for.
Do you really think that a politician's view on gaming is of the utmost importance? I mean shit, I'm a cinema studies student with an high interest in the ludic medium but damn, video games are pretty low on the list of things I want my politicians to care about.

It is of the utmost importance because it's become a free speech issue, and a platform that is being used to justify subjective censorship by the goverment. Basically creating a perceived threat that will get people to beg the goverment to take their freedom away for their own protection.

As far as my response goes, consider that this made it to "The Escapist" apparently because despite what the article says it at least used a referance to a video game as an attention catcher in the title.

I thought it would involve a head injury after falling of the board. This is far more(see:actually) tragic, I mean, what the fuck?

this actually makes me ill. five bucks says FOX's news will be "boy kills over tony hawk: ride, a game where you kill none skaters because they are 'so lame' and have sex with multiple partners" and at the bottom they'll reuse the "se-Xbox" graphic from mass effect. but no, this is actually sad, no matter what the motive. a life that had only lived 9 years is very sad.

OT: I bet Fox News will have a fun time with this.
While CNN sucks Obama's dick.
(Sorry, i hate when people point to one news media as overall evil.)

But I'm glad that the media actually decided that this story was not in fact caused by video games. I'm also sad that a young boy was killed.

Sounds like a weak story to link a video game to violence.

No Harlem, PS3 and Ride is a lot o money.
Robbery simple and plain.

Dumb stories like that trying to link violence in games to ROBBERIES leave me disappointed.

Gee it almost feels as bad as being Rick Rolled.

the Daily News declined to connect the game with the subsequent violent behavior. While there is nothing good about this heart-wrenching story, perhaps we have finally reached a point where the mainstream media resists the gratuitous potshot at our hobby.
Hypocrisy?
Tony Hawk Ride is inconsequential to the murder, yet I never would have guessed that from the title.

I guess there's a first time for everything. *sigh*

Poor kid. He was too young, way too young, for this to happen.

What hypocrisy? The title says 'while playing' not 'because of playing.' If the murder occurred but didn't involve video games at all, it probably wouldn't have been posted here, but it does, slightly, so it was.

What's sad is...he wasn't stabbed while playing a good Tony Hawk game, or ANY good game. He got stabbed playing TH: Ride. That, my friends, is balls.

Yeah, I would kill a child just so I didn't have to play that game.

Also, WTF? You stole Furburt's old avatar? For shame!

I, like many here, were thinking that the boy accidentally died from balance issues with the board controller but getting flat out stabbed for no raison is just insane and it does have nothing to do with the game or the console. I feel sad now for the kid that died.
