If you're setting it 30+ years after Endor Thrawn would be getting up there in years (though not knowing how long Chiss live I suppose a case could be made for someone younger if they have a longer lifespan) and I think in that case the Paelleon role would be better played by a younger protege who Thrawn is training. If they had done the Trawn trilogy in the 80s I'd be right on board with having both characters played by actors in their 40s/50s.TheCaptain said:
To be honest, in the expanded universe Han, Luke and Leia are much older, if they get Mark, he will undoubtedly be in the Jedi Temple teaching Padawans, and Han and Leia will be with there kids...i cant see the movie following them, but they will be main characters, they have to be, if not then there isn't a point of them being in the film, The expanded universe pretty much revolves around them, albeit a few moments.

Well, Paelleon was already a Star Destroyer Captain at Endor, I would've a really hard time getting used to a much younger version of him... the "old soldier" persona is kind of integral for the character. And while Chiss age generally faster due to their more active metabolism, they've rarely been depicted as looking old, so McKellan... hm.thetoddo said:

this little discussion intrigued me enough to think about this and post a thought. I am fine with a younger look, and an "old soldier" type of attitude. If i recall Dark Horse portrayed Palleon as someone that looked younger than they actuakly were? Barrowman's Torchwood look would work for me....though the one that kind of intrigues me for either look could be someone like Nathaniel Parker.thetoddo said:

What a crap idea. Why cant they do something new. Why has every thing got to be connected to the originals. Its like Aliens series, get rid of Ripley, she is a liability to the series, you can add new characters to fight the aliens. Just pisses me off.

I'd be surprised if Mark Hamill signs because I seem to remember hearing there was some bad blood between him and Lucas/the business aspects of the entire thing. It came up when he was doing his rather iconic "voice of the Joker" for DC Universe Online, and people were wondering why with his voice acting chops nowadays he wasn't working with Bioware, since having him do a voice for ToR would have been a big deal, and the general answer was that he had a falling out and was instead siding exclusively with the guys who had been good to him (DC Animated Universe) doing competing products (Sony instead of EA).
I say "right" because Star Wars is supposed to work on a cycle, basically The Force dictates that good gets a period to rule, followed by a period of balance, followed by a period of evil, followed by balance, followed by good, ad infinium, with the periods of balance being brief as the wheel turns (so to speak). What we're seeing is the end of an era of good, a time period where good has ruled so long there were little in the way of standing armies, few large scale conflicts of any sort, and nobody even really remembered what a "Sith" was anymore, their empire having been so totally eradicated. The whole prophecy about Anakin, is that he's going to "bring balance" which is misunderstood by the good guys since with peace and good dominating the galaxy there is no where for it to go but down, leading to the whole "But you were supposed to save us!" thing with Obi-Wan on Musafar which was kind of silly on a lot of levels. Incidently it wasn't time for evil to reign either (though that's coming), when Anakin's whole mixed up personality leads to him lobbing Papaltine into a reactor core he's ending the major force of evil that's around also... balance achieved, the dominant good guys (Jedi) and Evil Empire are both out of commission with chaos reigning everywhere and no real major power having much of an advantage over any other.
The thing was that by having the original trilogy end where it did, it was possible to allow it to retain it's consistincy and still end on a high note. It's pretty much all down hill conceptually from there. If our sole remaining semi-trained force user is going to do anything he's going to become the next major bad guy, and he's going to win and plunge the galaxy into darkness for the next few thousand years.
This is incidently why I've always said that doing more movies following the ones we had would be a bad idea, as you really can't have them be even remotely upbeat without ruining the entire subtext of things. Doing another series (on TV or whatever) with the galaxy returning from darkness on the other hand could end on a more upbeat manner and would work better.
If your wondering where a lot of this is coming from, a lot of it's in the canon if you look (old and new Star Wars) but also Lucas spelled it out a couple of times if I remember. He apparently was involved in ghost-writing KoToR2, the entire thing being based on his notes and such. While that game sucked on a lot of levels (not being finished) it was fundementally about Star Wars on a more metaphysical level. Few people ever even suspect how the cycles work or how The Force guides things, making free will ultimatly an illusion, but Kreia figured it out. Her overall objective was to restore true free will, by destroying The Force itself. Her initial plan was to wipe out most of those the force worked through (both Sith and Jedi), however the game kind of fell apart there due to time and budget constraints and we never really got into the idea of how exactly she was supposed to destroy a metaphysical entity that may or may not work through micro-organisms in people's blood. Of course the ending renders it kind of irrelevent since she starts spouting prophecy with her dying breath, leading one to wonder if by trying to do what she did, it was all itself a manipulation by The Force and what it wanted, with her never having had any chance of success to begin with.
This also is in part a sort of explanation for all the midichlorians, the idea was never that anyone could just master the force, it's it's own entity (with two sides) that does it's own thing. The midichlorians are simply how it works through specific people and lets them have powers. On a lot of levels they are like points of articulation on a puppet, the more important the puppet and the more they want it to do, the more power they give it and the more they have their fingers into it. Someone with a few is someone that The Force might use occasionally, or want to die, but doesn't see as being that important. Someone like Anakin that is being lead by the nose through prophecy on the other hand is someone it both wants to manifest a lot of power through, and maintain a tight grip on.
The prequel trilogy was badly written, but I always felt it also suffered from it basically explaining things people sort of knew, but didn't really want to think about. A big part of it, including a lot of the "WTF" moments is prtty much that Anakin doesn't want to be The Dark Lord, yet The Force wants him to be. Every time he starts to get his ducks in a row, The Force arranges for something truely F@cked up to happen. You know like "hey, your mother just got raped to death by sandpeople... so much for the grip you were starting to get on yourself, eh Ani boy?". It's supposed to raise the question of whether free will truely exists, and whether he ever had a choice of being Darth Vader or not. Even his resistance is questionable given that it was needed for "balance" since as the primary tool he was intended to kill Papaltine as well as the Jedi.
Enough ranting... the point is that they could probably do this one without Mark Hamil, given that it works in Cycles Luke winding up seeming a lot like Vader makes a degree of sense. Carrie Fischer seems like she'll do almost anything for work so I imagine she'll come back to the show, since it's probably a better paycheck than occasional comedy gigs and doing things like station identification for Syfy. Billy Dee Williams is a give or take thing, I never really felt Lando was that integral to the series other than the plot in Empire. If they get him fine, if not, no big deal.
Given some of Harrison Ford's comments I wouldn't be surprised if he took the job specifically so they will kill Han off since I seem to remember an interview where he said he wished they had and given the story some "bite".
Depending on the way they go, they could also always have the original cast/characters killed off screen. It would be funny if they turn Harrison Ford into a screen queen (one role he's never had). As Evil Luke finally starts channeling he Dark Side he goes berserk on the Millenium falcon... Han comes on board to find the cockpit soaked with gore, dismembered parts of Leia and Lando all over the place... he looks down and realizes OMG... that isn't shag carpet, someone skinned Chewie with a lightsaber. Suddenly the distinctive sound of a lightsaber ignites as Luke, dressed in his new Seriel killer outfit comes stalking forward, Han says "hey kid, chill out" pulling his blaster only to have the bolts deflected... he runs, panting old man breaths as he twists an ankle tripping over a power cord... he crawls into a cargo bay as we watch the glow of a lightsaber approaching from the darkness behind him. He closes the door just in time, as he slumps against it, breathing hard, content he's escaped and starts to stand to get a spare radio from storage there is a hissing sound as a lightsaber stabs through the door... right through Han's chest as he gurgles his last.... followed by the title... "Star Wars"... perhaps with classy dripping blood FX.
Okay that's a bit much, but I think it's a funny image.
