Has anyone else here actually migrated from console gaming to PC gaming?

You missed out. The PS2 has the best backlog of any home console since.. ever.

[sub]In my very humble and subjective opinion.[/sub]
Yeah, I'm inclined to agree with you there, in retrospect. If there was any old console I'd be tempted to pick up it would be a PS2. Maybe one day...
Here you go. :3

I knew, years ago, that buying sale games on Steam is many times cheaper than buying console games retail, or even Direct-to-Drive. I saved up for a desktop, got (what I thought) was a reasonable package deal, and even though I usually have to tone done the visuals (hey, let's see you do better with twelve hundred dollars and no starting components!), I haven't really looked back.

I legally own over a hundred games on Steam, and have spent, at my estimate, less than three hundred dollars. That would have gotten me six games on consoles. Even factoring in the cost of the desktop, bringing it to fifteen hundred, I'd be looking at a console and thirty games, if that. I've heard that games are where consoles make their money before, but looking at the numbers really drives the point home, and illustrates how a PC is a much more efficient investment.

Anyone else with me, here?
I started on windows 3.1
Went to Nes, Snes then N64, Gamecube, Xbox, Ps, Ps2, Xbox 360.

Now?
PC.
By miles.

I can play as a Jedi in Oblivion, force pushing enemies and cutting down foes with my lightsaber.
I can play as a headcrab in half-life.

PC is, and always will be, superior for games so long as they allow user-created content.

I recently migrated in the opposite direction from PC to Xbox. Can't fault the argument about the difference in markets though, a mild annoyance for me is that the only available online market is controlled by the manufacturer (same with my PSP), whereas the PC market is much freer (I heartily recommend Good Old Games if you haven't signed up already, btw). It's not terrible for me as I'm willing to pay for it, but I do miss the variety and better value.

That said, I'm doing a PhD now so I have less spare time to fix my PC when it invariably goes wrong. Once my PhD is over I'll probably save up for a proper gaming rig and store data, work etc on a separate netbook.
Hehe, I seriously hope your PhD isn't in Computer Science! (Or computer engineering).

I think everyone older than like 25 who is a PC gamer must have migrated. There really wasn't a concept of 'pc gamer' back in the old days. You could play games on PC sure, but that was only one outlet. Now it is a much bigger division.

For myself, consoles have always been the more 'social' entertainment. If me and a bunch of friends are hanging out, chances are the 360 is going to get turned on at some point to settle that age old male dominance dispute, whereas if I'm on my own, I'm more likely to turn to a good singleplayer game on the PC.

I can't really say I have a preference for either, just more of a bias, I buy multiplayer games on the console, and singleplayer games on the PC. It's probably just a holdover from the days when the words MMO where as much an insult as a description and 'Console Multiplayer' meant four friends in a living room.

I grew up with my computer. I wanted a console, but my Mom said that PC games were "bad enough".

Anyways, I've lost the will to shell out for a console, considering the benefits my glorious tricked-out PC gives me.

Yes. My first 3 gaming systems were consoles. The Atari 2600, the NES, and the SNES. Then I got my first PC. Of course, I still gamed on consoles, I bought a Playstation and followed the slow downfall of the Final Fantasy series, as well as experiencing the evolution of fighting and racing games... to this day I still game on consoles from time to time. Sometimes the PS3 is just easier for an action or racing title... and sometimes those titles are exclusive to the PS3.
But two things that little black almost-computer will never be able to properly run are FPSes and RTSes. Even when you plug a mouse and keyboard into it, the system's GUI is still designed for for use by that limited little 12 button dual analog stick controller.
Also, no mods or modding communities. Most of the games I play, I mod.

Possibly. I'm 25 and I sold out on the gaming master race last year after two decades of loyal service :p which is why I'm loth to give it up entirely.

Yup, right here.

Got a PC a month ago after spending 18-20 years as a purely console gamer. I still love consoles and handhelds, but I can't deny PC gaming has been a massive boost.

I went to the PC because the only modern console I had was the Wii, and only Twilight Princess sparked a love for that console. With the release of the Orange Box, I migrated to the PC, got Steam and have fallen in love.

I used to play ps2 and 360 for years and years, until one day I simply decided to sell my 360 and the games to buy a high class power whore of a computer, and by god I love this beauty, gaming is so much more immersive and fun when everything is so clear, and computers naturally have less menus to navagate through, and it takes less time as the mouse is faster than analog sticks, so you have more time to enjoy the good aspects of the games.

That along with all the mods and little additions the computer has in comparison to the consoles, the computer is a much better choice in my opinnion.

You quoted me first; I consider quotes to be a "I really want the OP to read this" tag.

You kind of took that first one out of context.
I wanted to address your post point-by-point. It makes forming coherent responses easier.

My gaming PC was cheaper than my PS3, Every game has bugs, gog.com (although killing floor still wont play for me), people use mac to game on? News to me.
Now that Steam has expanded to Mac, I'm sure this will become more common. My desktop is a bit more stable, but also much more expensive; that's the trade-off when buying pre-assembled I suppose.

Since this site is mostly PC gamers, I can't recall a console thread.
Again, I think that if you look at the numbers, you'll find that consoles have equal representation. I'm sure that for every Starcraft fan there is a Smash Bros. fan, etc.

There have probably been a few (I am not counting the "should I get a 360 or PS3" threads). Everytime, that I can recall, a console is put next to a pc, the console gets ripped apart. I even made a thread that turned into that, I asked "now that the PS3 has a M/K will PC gamers consider getting a PS3?" the thread ended up being "the PC is still far better 'cos you can mod blah blah blah" and turned into a console VS PC thread.
Fanboys being fanboys. Try making a 360 thread; I'm sure you'll get PS3 trolls.

Weirdly I don't watch moviebob even though I love films. I don't like hearing another persons view on a film mainly 'cos they usually go over the top with the break down of the film, examining the acting ability, lighting, sound, props etc and I just don't care about that stuff.
I'd say give him a shot; watch a few episodes. It's layman subject matter for the most part.

Personally, if you like PC gaming go be happy playing it. If you like consoles go be happy playing it, just stop banging on and on about how "consoles are dumbing down games", "M/K rapes controller", "consoles are ruining gaming" just stop it.
Personally, I only wanted to see if anyone else in these forums was formerly a console gamer that had migrated to PC gaming; I gave my own reason as being the cost-per-game. I'm sure every aspect of gaming has been discussed in these forums at some point or another, but that shouldn't mean I can't talk about appreciating how affordable PC games are.

Sure, when I was a kid I was all about the Nintendo and the Sega Genesis. Streets of Rage, Mortal Kombat, Battletoads, Mario, Sonic, Rocket Knight Adventures, etc. Good times!

Round the same time many of my friends were getting into the PS1 and N64 however I was introduced to the double whammy of Warcraft: Orcs & Humans as well as Mechwarrior 2. Pretty much changed my outlook on gaming at the time and although I've certainly owned consoles since then, I've more or less stuck with the PC as a primary gaming platform since.

You have to understand that I hadn't even really known those sorts of games even existed beforehand. Didn't play videogames much growing up but when I did play I was purely into platformers, beat em ups and fighting games. Then along comes the PC with a whole new slew of genres I hadn't even known were around and which I quickly discovered suited my tastes so much better than any of the console genres available at the time. Before long I was also introduced to series like Age of Empires, Baldur's Gate, Thief: The Dark Project and the like and I was hooked for life.

Apparently that some kids grew up actually preffering the PC to the consoles however and continue to do so is a difficult concept for some people to understand, snark Moviebob.

But bitterness aside, there you go!

I have a gaming PC and a console. I have an xbox 360 also if there's something I want to play with a controller and it's on both systems ill still play it on PC simply because it's cheaper and/or better supported. I have migrated as of late back to PC only unless the title is a console exclusive and I just have to play it. Im pretty sick of paying 60$ for a game that looks crappy on my tv but amazing on my PC, that doesn't give me a choice of multiplayer server and randomly matches me up with fuckwads or hosts a game on someone's shitty connection they share with 50 other people in a dorm etc, i want to be able to get user created content and servers.. you can't do that on a console. I just really want more control over my gaming experience and I find that on PC. Consoles can't compete with that, period. I just feel that my PC provides more value for the investment I put into it. Not really an easy way to get 10 games in a series for under 100 on a console. Steam offers a better value for your gaming dollar then any console ever will.

Not saying that consoles don't have their place. I like my xbox, just not as much as my PC . Consoles are hitting their target demographic.

After getting a Nvidia 9800 and 2TB Hard Drive for Christmas, I migrated to PC gaming this year and I'm loving it. There's just so much more to do with PCs, such as mods and the like, plus it's much easier for me to game with a mouse and keyboard than a controller for extended periods of time.

I started gaming on a TRS-80 as a lad, went to the C64, the C128, the Amiga then onto Windows based machines. Only ever owned 2 consoles - a PS2 I got for free and didn't use much and a PSP for when I was doing a fair bit of travelling and now mainly acts as a paperweight.

I've been playing on consoles for most of my life, but having recently obtained a computer capable of running modern games, I've gotten into PC gaming. I haven't completely stopped playing console games, but I tend to start up my Xbox 360 with less frequency every month.

That is a bit silly, I'm 35 and I've never owned a console. I started with a 2nd hand Sinclair ZX Spectrum in 1985, moved to a C64 in 1988 and I got my very own IBM Compatible 486 DX 33 in 1991. The Commodore 64 was the dominant games machine of the eighties in my experience. Load "*",8,1
