Has there ever been a game directly based off of a book?

I have seen books turn into movies, movies turn into games, games to books, games to movies, but I have never encountered a video game directly based off of a book.

Don't submit little kid games based off of Dr. Suess books or other games that are designed for teaching, and don't submit books that were turned into movies and then into a game (spin-offs like "The Hobbit" count).

Some for H.P. Lovecraft's stuff.
Parasite Eve was based off a book, too.

And Sam and Max came from a comic book, if that counts.

Isn't "Dante's Inferno" Based off the epic poem "Divine Comedy", which may technically count.

Edit: Damn! First time I've been ninja'd!

not many I can think of. A bunch of ideas in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. came from "Roadside Picnic" by the Strugatsky brothers, but that's about it.

Read the full OP, you idiot.
Lol, nice editing skills...

Seriously OP, if your going to make a mistake and not realize there IS a game version of the Hobbit you could at least just admit it and include it in your OP - instead of trying to insult me after editing...

There was an abonimation called the Golden Compass which was based on a book called the Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman.

I thought & hoped I was wrong, but I wasn't. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Golden_Compass_(video_game)]

Edit: Well after the OP edited, this kinda becomes void. Oh well.

Interesting question. Rainbow Six was loosely based on the book of the same name, before the Tom Clancy games spiralled out of control and XIII was based on a graphic novel.

Megami Tensei was based on "Digital Devil Story" by Aya Nishitani.

Parasite Eve was based on the novel by Hideaki Sena.

Also Half-Life was inspired by Stephen King´s The Mist.

Well most of the Tom Clancy games count right? Endwar was a pretty sucky book but made a decent game. I also remember a really old pc game based off Alice in wonderland... was a pretty gory game too.. Cant quite remember the title but the cat looked like he was skinless. That didn't haunt me when I was little.... >.>

Even thought it came out at the same time as the movies so probably doesn't count, "The Fellowship of the Ring" game was based on the book and not the movie, so you got things like Tom Bombadil. I'm not sure but isn't there going to be an "Ender's Game" game coming out?

Roadside Picknick - S.T.A.L.K.E.R.(not directly though, but they idea comes from the book).
