...that FEAR ladder bit wasn't scary (at least the video wasnt...)
You kinda have to be there. The enemy AI has you really amped up and paranoid because you can die in a second if you're exposed to direct gunfire. So it's a panic moment when you think you've just run into a soldier at the bottom who's way too close for comfort.

The other thing about it is that Alma's appearance at the top fakes you out. You think that was the intended scare so you're not expecting another one right after it.

The cake is a lie.

Yeah, it's not funny. It's terrifying.

I'd also like to say the G.F.S. Valhalla in Metroid Prime 3 makes me feel very, very uncomfortable. Especially the first time I accidentally shot one of the bodies.

That's the catalyst that made me turn off the game forever and sell it on ebay. :( I understand having realism in games, because even kids wouldn't be spared in a violent alien invasion, but I also play games to have fun. Watching children getting murdered is not my idea of fun.

So, that, and hearing the prisoners you can never see in SH2 making horrible, strange noises.
Yeah, that scene was really surprising. I liked it though, since any child that stays alive WILL be irritating as fuck. The game went there.

Also, it was insane from start to finish. You start off beating two guys to death with a wrench for hitting on your girlfriend, and it just gets worse escalates.
IT WAS REALLY FUCKED UP, to quote Tommy.

Though not playing it, you missed out on the ending. Especially when Tommy gets pissed after the... nah, I can't give spoilers, it's too awesome.

The thing that made me sell Prey was the fact that it was a clunky, boring, un-fun piece of shit.

OT:

Fallout 3, following the worried father's distress call then finding him and his family.

Prey, when the two little kids are trapped in a room, and some alien spirit possesses and kills the little girl who then in little girl form takes the little boy, and launches him onto a spike. All you can do is watch.
Yea, the thing that made that scene as terrifying as it really was is that it was the only video game moment I remember that actually depicted brutal violence against children. When I first saw those kids I just automatically assumed that they would either get away somehow or that my next mission would involve saving them, instead that young boy watches his sister get possessed and starts to cry before being brutally impaled to death by his own little sister, plus they both looked like they were little older then 12 years old........

.......yea.

EDIT: Here is the actual scene:

Gawd, i feel weird after watching that D: Think i'll stay away from that game.

Haha! That too. And from what little I recall, the sections of the game where the space ship was literally shitting out of multiple assholes didn't give it any bonus points from me either. How old were those developers, five?

Indeed.
yes those things are creepy as, also kinda ruined George Segals work for me [link]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Segal_%28artist%29[/link]

Now i cant look at his work with out the idea that they are actual people in them, makes his work incredibly more creepy.

In Dead Space, when you're walking down a corridor and hear a damp thudding sound, and as you turn the corner you see a man with all his skin from neck on down has been torn off, and he's hitting his head against the wall attempting suicide. As you get up close, he raises his head back pretty far and whacks his brains out against the wall.

That was freaky.
This, but it didn't really scare me, just stuck with me. Also

I know, that was rather weird.

And the main character was such an unlikeable douchebag... the guns were weak and unsatisfying to use, the aiming was shoddy, the shuttle flying sequences were appalling... it was one of the worst games I've ever played.

Yeah but, looking at it now, I think it takes the audio and breaking one of them to make it truly creepy.

Alot of people mention the F.E.A.R. ladder but I'm always surprised as to which ladder scene they linked, for me its this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvgDIS73JNg
first time playing through I don't think I've ever been happier falling off a ladder.
I honestly don't remember that particular ladder. Where is it?

Then again, it's been a few years since I have played F.E.A.R.

I have never encountered this one myself but after seeing a video of it on Youtube it has haunted my nightmares for a very long time and to this day I still tremble in fear at the thoughts of returning to a Halo 2 multiplayer map for one of those maps is home to an unstoppable demonic entity.

Ladies and gentlemen of the Escapist, I give you.... THE GHOST OF LOCKOUT:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QL_pJJ36pn0

There we go, a real video game paranormal experiance.
My god, he doesnt even show up on radar. What kind of monster is that?!?!
You know for a while I was thinking maybe we were safe from this horror because Halo 2 online support has been shut down and thus surely this vengeful spirit was taken down with it. Destroyed when the universe that birthed it collapsed. But now that I remember all those people who kept the online support alive for like thirty six hours I'm starting to wonder if The Ghost didn't escape from Halo 2 and leap into someone's online connection and is now freely stalking the internet, going into online games where he finds them and terrorising innocent gamers.
What if he lurks out there in cyberspace, leaping into counterstrike, call of duty, team fortress 2 maps and even Halo 3 and then eventually even Halo: Reach and all online games in between? Why there would be no way of stopping him.

Now he lurks in cyberspace, as an invicible scream devouring demigod who is so fed up with his own immortality that he vents his frustrations by destroying gamer life whenever he sees it.
And we cannot ever hope to stop him.

I... I fear for the future of online gaming. They are truly cursed.

A single image?

The Protozoid Slimer attacking from Duke Nukem 3D. Perhaps not haunting, but more OMFG GET IT OFF D: D: D: Still can't stand those things.

Haunting is a term I would rather use for chillin/scary enviroments without there being action/violence going on.. like the X18 labs in STALKER.

What are some of the most haunting images you've seen in video games? I'm looking for things that are creepy, disturbing, and most importantly stick in your mind.

Mine are Alex Roivas in the bathtub (Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem) and the cutscene in Twilight Princess after you free the 3rd light god thing (all those blank, possessed-looking faces).

Sorry I can't find images of these :(
I would say, (Partial spoiler i guess)
When you see the witch at the alter in the wedding dress in "the passing". The rest of the wedding has been butchered and she's alone.

I will also add the creepy guy hiding from the nuclear holocaust in a random shed in ArmA 2: Eagle Wing. The sounds he makes are creepy as hell!

Holy fuck ArmA 2 was terrifying...

Metro 2033 Chapter "Ghosts"

When you're in the train car and the ghost of a little boy appears asking for its mum and then a nosalis ghost appears and runs after him, you don't see violence but its still really horrible just thinking about it
