Part-time or full-time. Skilled work or unskilled work. Also what place are you in?

I'm a student, whose planning on applying for a part-time job in Canada, in the greater Toronto Area. Naturally, I'll be going for the unskilled, part-time category. I was just wondering how difficult it is to get a job these days.

Every job wants experience, no job is willing to give me that experience.

I need a job to get a job, it seems.

Yes. A thousand times yes. It's probably because I don't have a car, so my choice of workplace is extremely limited... In fact, it's limited to a place that doesn't hire you unless you're eighteen or older.

I have been unemployed since May. Since I live in the big city, there are no jobs to speak of, no matter how hard I look.

I've had very limited experience with jobs, so all I know is that it's much easier to get a job if you know people. I had a very short commission job doing a website for a nearby company that my former programming tutor set me up with, and I also got a job from a friend's mom delivering flyers for a local election.

Absolutely. I have a Bachelor's degree too.

Luckily I can freelance in the meantime. It would be nice to get something a little more permanent.

Over here in Vancouver they want Educated/Experienced people, and the only way to get a job when you lack both of those things is if you have friends/family who have a say in recruiting :p

Even the Walmart has requirements now D:

This is exactly my problem. I even went to school to get a degree and become fully certified nationally and by the state I live in. And most places say specifically that they want certified people, yet I get passed over for people with experience every time. I be not a happy camper.

I'm in Canada, GVRD (Greater Vancouver Regional District) I'm totally unskilled, but I can't even get a job at McDemons. It's just that bad.

I've never been employed. At 23, and no qualifications to my name, given how people with degrees find it tough, I'm not entirely sure how I ever will be, save if by some miracle my writing manages to get published.

I graduated from uni in May 2008 and have been unemployed since then. I started a job last week as a school crossing guy. It's only 5 hours a week, but it is a job.

I left uni just as the recession started, so the last couple of years have been difficult.

Aye. Someone that feels my pain.

OT: My last 4 places of employment went under within 6 months of me being there. That looks horrible on an application.

After 3 years and over a thousand applications, I managed to get an interview last week due to a friend working there and basically forcing the manager to interview me. I'm supposed to hear back from them sometime this coming week. I'm not getting my hopes up.

Personally I just gave up trying for a job here and i'm now focusing on getting into a school.
I moved and had to quit my job at a store, when I tried to go for another job in the same area, they basicly told me they where looking for someone with more experience.

I've been in the Army for over 5 years now... so nope!

And I have a lot of possible jobs when I get out (7 months), and one practically guaranteed, retardedly huge salary and all.

Sometimes, being a Veteran is the shit.

As for the question, how hard is it to get a job... no idea, as far as Canada goes. You can always join the US Army though (I was surprised when I found out Canadians can get in, too).

American 18 year old college freshman here.
1)I've had "jobs" before but they were all under-the-table no taxes paid on the money. Usually direct jobs like mowing someone's lawn, working for a store related to a religious charity, or landscaping on rich people's yards.
2)Any jobs that required an application, either said "We'll call you back later" or "The manager will get to you". The only time I actually met with a manager, it was because a friend worked there and convinced the manager to see me. We talked and he said he'd hire me if a spot opened up in the future. I guess it never did. Anyways, I applied for jobs alot during late junior HS year, tried a little that summer, and applied for jobs alot early senior year. I was a grade A student with something like a 3.85 GPA, a minimal amount of extracurricular work, available time, and the ability to easily learn things.
Eventually, I was just like "fuck it" and haven't applied for a job since.
3)Now I'm in college. But I don't wanna take a job during freshman year, so I'll look for a job sometime later. I'm currently a CS major, so I hear of technical jobs and internships, but they almost always require more skills than I currently have. Hopefully I'll have those skills by the end of this year or sometime sophomore year.
I guess I'll find a job eventually, but right now I'm college-focused.

Oh and remember this, most of the time it's not what you know, it's who you know. If you just happen to fucking excel in some area it will get you places, but most people I know who get employed are employed because they know someone who works at the place of employment.

Courtesy of the American "Black Prince" yes. So has everyone else.

Need-experiance-to-get-job -----> Need-job-to-get-experiance cycle goes on and on until there's new jobs put into the system - a logical move which we can be garanteed won't happen.

Across the pond, European welfare-givaways and overall dhimmitude have bankrupted their economies to much the same result.

w00t - civilization is collapsing. I thought I'd be happier.

Am I the first person to say no? Granted, I got my first job way before the recession started, and I have five years of experience in my career to back me up, but I had no problem getting a job.

Now, transferring. That's a different kettle of fish.

EDIT: I live in Colorado currently, and am moving to Illinois. But in my field, there's so much turnover that I can be confident in finding a place wherever I want to go.

I've been out of a job for nearly two years at this point. D: I've had a summer volunteer job (finishes next Saturday), and that was fun, but it would've been nice to have a real permanent paying job instead.

I've even applied to the four Walmarts in my area multiple times as a cart-wrangler and get turned down every time. That's just tragic, innit? D:

(P.S. I live in North Carolina.)
