I bought the first Prototype around 4 times. I'd buy it, start the game, get to a part I couldn't beat, stop, then sell it. Then I'd see it for cheap and the cycle started anew.

I was soooooo satisfied when I saw the credits roll on that one.

A few games I purchased off of Steam were Thief 2 & 3, Age of Wonders 1, 2 & 3, Doom 1, 2 & 3...

Then, when they were available on Steam, I bought them there so as not to have to manage the licenses. I took the old discs to work where I could run them independently of the net.

Got give Dead Space for PS3

Sold my ps3 and got it for 360

360 broke, sold my games and got it for pc

Hated the controls on the pc version so bought the 360 version again when I bought another 360

Got Tekken 6 for 360. Bought it again after I got my third 360. Found out I could play the arena mode without having to do scenario mode on the psp version so I gave my 360 copy away and bought it on the PSP

Not including gifts, have you ever bought a game multiple times?

It has happened to me a few times for different reasons...

Bought Mirror's Edge on the Xbox360 and on the PC (when it was on Steam sale). Because my XBox broke down and I wanted to play the game again.

Also bought Alan Wake for the Xbox360 and PC (when it was on Steam sale). Never got a chance to play the DLC's and during the steam sale I got both games and all DLC's for the price of half a game. That was a good deal.

And bought Guilty Gear XX on the PC (while I had it on the Xbox36), just because I couldn't resist it for 5 bucks.

Bought Neverwinter Nights 2 twice because the second time I got it for free with the expansion.

Also bought Baldur's Gate 2 twice because the second time I got my hands on the limited edition, very cheap.

Bought Diablo II twice for multiplayer and bought World of Warcraft 2 times to have 2 accounts.

Bought Final Fantasy VII for the PC again, because I regret selling it.

Finally, bought a few indie games multiple times because they were including in indie bundles, while I already had those games.

And I am probably planning on buying a few old games I already own on GoG, because the GoG version has Windows 7 support.
Some of the games that have appeared in multiple pay-what-you-want indie bundles.

Also a few games that were in, for example, Steam publisher bundles where even adding in what I paid for those originally it was still a decent deal (I usually don't grab those unless the games I specifically want from it are normally higher than the total bundle price, and those bundles are a big chunk of why my Steam account is as high "valued" as it is according to Steam Calculator [~$6k, though that's not hard when I can spend $2 for a bundle on IndieGala, IndieRoyale, or Humble Bundle and up my "value" by $20-$80]).

Only game that comes to mind is Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne. Bought it again after the first one snapped in the disk drive. Worth it, i'd say.

Yeah more times than I'd like to admit.

Had to buy an Uncharted 1 & 2 bundle after trading them in and later realizing I shoudn't have.

Same thing happened with Assassin's Creed I & II.

Devil May Cry HD edition even though I owned the PS2 versions.

GTA IV is the winner here though. Bought the Episodes of Liberty City on disc. Disastrously buggy. Traded that in for a voucher to download them from PSN, which worked well for a time but quickly turned to shit as well. Finally bought the Complete Edition, which thankfully seems to work.

And I guess, if I wanted to be a dick, BlazBlue, Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs Capcom 3 and their constant re-releases. But I'm a fighting game junkie so I can't really complain about it.

Sure.

I bought every Neo Geo and plenty of PSX games when the local video stores went out of business, as they would have cost me at least 10x on any other market. Plus, I had sweet Neo Geo love to hand out for a couple of birthdays and Christmas sessions to come.

I bought about half a dozen Warcraft III/Frozen Throne discs, just to make sure I'd never be stranded without it.

...and I bought Dark Souls twice, because I really liked - still do like - the idea of playing through this great experience another time, with higher resolution and less Bl..Bl..Bli..Blighttown stuttering.

No negative experiences to report, all is fine - apart from me never actually using more than one registration of WCIII/TFT.

Oh, and I have at least... seven incarnations of Street Fighter II on various Systems, for obvious reasons. I mean, how could you resist buying Street Fighter II X Special Turbo Hyper Plus? Come on!

I've met several folks that bought plenty of WOW copies to make their own, one-person guilds and their own gaming arcades (with nothing but WOW in most cases). That was actually a bit scary.

Reading the other comments, I'm honestly very surprised to find the nay-saying side I'm on, to be the minority.
Are you referring to buying the same game on different platform? I suppose you are. If you just have a PC, then you won't have that situation. I do try to get the games for the PC, if I have a choice, even if the game has been optimized for the console. I have an XBox360 controller for the PC, so the controls are not an issue. But the thing is, I bought a console for the console exclusives. I am a fan of JRPG's and the PC is severely lacking those.

I'm referring to the topic at hand: buying multiple copies of the same game. I can understand the situation with having more than one platforms;
You feel a game is better on another platform.
You simply want to see what a game is like on another platform.
There's only one game you play on, say PS3, and all the rest are on XBox 360, so you buy the multi-platform game's other version to get all your games on one machine so you can sell the other one or simply get rid of keeping it constantly plugged in too.
The list goes on, but it follows a pattern...

What I'm surprised of, is how the majority, it seems, buys the same game over and over again. Using multiple gaming platforms is common, I believe, yet I can't see how nearly all of those people in question would end up buying the same game for more than one system.

Even more surprising, and my original point (understanding the issue with having multiple platforms), is the amount of people buying the very same game on the same platform because of things like wanting to support even more, losing a disc, selling it and realizing you want it back, and so on.

I think I've bought GalCiv 2 multiple times. It's ok though, the game is amazing, so i'm fine with that.

Alan Wake, Command and Conquer 3, Mass Effect, and Trine on Steam because I bought them on console before I had a decent gaming PC, and wanted to experience the superior PC version

All the Oddworld games on Steam, because I'd been wanted to play them again, and it was easier than finding my original discs and hoping they still worked. In the case of the two that were on original Xbox, I remember reading that one or both of them weren't compatible with the Xbox 360.

Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 on Steam because I originally bought retail and wanted to get a version without Securom for my second decent gaming PC.

Final Fantasy 7 8 and 9 because my original discs stopped working due to scratches. I bought replacement discs for all three, but the replacement FF8 stopped working eventually too, so I bought it a third time from the PSN.

Also The Darkness because it 'disappeared' while I was living in shared accommodation at uni.

I have a bad habit of buying games, getting bored with them, selling them, and a couple of short months later getting nostalgic and buying them again, starting the cycle over.

To give you an idea of how ridiculous this gets, I've bought and sold and rebought Crysis 2 FOUR times.

Yes, I have all the Ratchet and Clank games and still bought the HD pack. Also, I was playing through and noticed this:

IS THAT A POSTAL 2 REFERENCE?! What IS that?

Only one I can think of is Shadow of the Colossus.

I had it for the PS2 and loved the holy fuck out of it. It is in my top 5 favorite games. Way back in 2006 or 2007 I lent it to a friend and when he gave it back the game would always freeze at the second colossus, the one on the beach.

I tried everything, but that was it for the game, it was dead. So with the release of the ICO HD collection, I couldn't turn it down. I wanted my Shadow and I had never played ICO before, so it was a great purchase. Although I haven't played either of them yet...I have to get on that soon. After I beat Dead Space which might take a month...uhg.

*Games that I AM thinking of getting though that I have owned in the past is the Warcraft 3 battlechest. I loved those games but played the shit out of them until I finally started getting this error mid-way through the campaign of the first game. Then I lost my frozen throne disc, so I might think about grabbing up that game again.

Wish it was on steam...damn blizzard.

I have about three legit copies of King's Bounty: The Legend and 1 bootlegged copy (does that balance out my karma?). One from gog.com, then I got KB with KB:AP, and then all three again anyways for Cross-worlds (that means 2 KB: AP). I bought KB on gog.com because of the boobies advertisement, then I bootlegged a copy of AP, loved it, then bought the Gold Edition (why not? It was only a dollar or so more). I needed Crossworlds, so I bought the diamond edition for the same logic as Gold.

Two copies (gog.com versions and OG CD versions) of Arcanum, Fallout, Baldurs Gate 1/2, Planescape, and Neverwinter Nights. 2 hard copies of Fallout 2.

I also have 2 Iron Grip Warlords.

I bought Diablo 2 at least three times, maybe four. I've accidentally destroyed one of the disks more than once. I also recently purchased a digital copy, so I won't have to go through that again. I have two copies of Borderlands, one on PC and one on XBOX 360. Bought Red Dead Redemption on PS3 and 360. Same with SF4. I've had a couple copies of Castlevania: SOTN. Lost the original, bought it on 360. Three copies of Vagrant Story, two hard, one digital. FF IX twice...
Christ, I really need to get better organized.

KoTOR and Battlefront; also Civ IV.

Had them on DVD; lost/sold the dvds and later bought them on steam. Do not regret.
For consoles, Phantasy Star Zero (because 3 characters was not enough for me). Also, the original Pokemon games.

Ever since I got myself a gaming-PC in May last year, I have expanded my steam-game collection quite heavily, and I can definitely say that I've bought plenty of games that I already had on the Xbox 360 at the time of buying them, such as:

*Lost Planet (My disk got scratched on the Xbox, leaving me unable to play the first few levels of the campaign)
*GTA IV
*Saint's Row 2
*Left 4 Dead
*The Orange Box (understandable)
*All of the Call of Dutys from the first Modern Warfare to Black Ops
*Borderlands
*Fallout 3
*Fallout New Vegas
*Dead space
*Battlefield: Bad Company 2
*Alien vs Predator
*Mass Effect 3 (Why have 2 of this, you ask? Well, let's say that I'm not willing to pay for a Gold-membership on Xbox Live just to play a single game's multiplayer.

*and not one that I have on PC or anything, but the first and Second Sonic Games I have on XBLA and on a Sega Genesis Collection on the PS3.
*and also XBLA's Banjo Kazooie + Tooie and the N64 Versions.

I know that there are way more games that I've bought more than once, but these are just the ones that I have on that old Xbox of mine.

I bought Star Wars: Jedi knight jedi academy 2 times, first time when it got out and secondly on Steam, because the disk of my old copy cracked :/.

Funny enough, I also bought Portal and Team Fortress 2 twice. When the orange box came out, the only game I was interrested in was Portal and after seeing a seperate copy of Portal at a local store, I immediately bought it. About a year later I bought TF2 as I got interessted in it and finally perhaps a year from then, I bought The Orange Box because I got interessted in Half-life due to the obsesive watching of Freeman's mind :p.

There might've been at least one other game I bought twice, but I can't say for certain :/

I've bought all of the Pokemon remakes. Also, I've bought Company of Heroes multiple times (steam and non-steam versions).
