Have you ever bought a game you knew nothing about and upon playing it found it to be AWESOME?

I was itching for something new to play and in a GameStop I found a new copy of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker on the shelf. I was a real little kid, probably no older than 8 and the Gamecube was the only console I had. Almost all the games I had were racing games with a few platformers here and there, but nothing like the fantasy world I had no idea I was buying. Like I said before, I had never played a game like this in my life, but I knew one thing alone about The Legend of Zelda series: it was old. I also knew my mom was old, so I went to her in the store and asked "Hey mom, what's The Legend of Zelda?" "Oh well it was an old game that came out when I was a kid, you play as blah blah blah blah (voice trails off)..." So I didn't know much about the game and series myself but my mother seemed to, and she was the smartest person I knew then, so without listening to her much, I went ahead and bought a game that I still replay today. Oh was I ever afraid of sailing, I hate sea beasts and always got my little brother to do the sailing for me!

Okami, I was in Gamestation when I noticed it in the PS2 section, there were no other games that looked interesting to me, as the other games were mostly sports games and shooters. The box art intruiged me and the description on the back sounded awesome. I decided I might as well buy it since I hadn't bought any other games for a while at the time and it turned out to be one of the best games I'd ever played. Heck, it still is one of the best games I've ever played. Good times, good times.

There was an old pc game called Star Wars: Jedi Academy. I bought it because it was in a bin for $4, and holy shit, star wars. It turned out to be one of the best game experiences I've ever had. The lightsaber dueling was AWESOME, and felt way more fluid and required more skill than the standard attack mashing in most action games. It actually felt like you were dueling. The force powers were appropriately huge, the story was fun, the levels were big and pretty, and it was the game that introduced me to console commands, letting me spawn dozens of evil sith duelists for me to have colossal 20-on-one fights with.

If you ever see it, get it.

Just Cause 2. Never played the first, and the game case gave nothing away that made it sound interesting. Yet it was in mega special, so I got it and played it and now love it. I have put a little over seventy hours since last year into this game.

I can still remember the day I got my first NES game. My parents said I could have any one they had, but I had to choose quickly. I immediately went for the familiar blue boxes from CAPCOM, having played Mega Man 1 and 2 at my cousin's house and wanting Strider, but the store didn't have it. I settled on a title I'd never heard of, of course in those days there was no internet for reviews, you either had played the arcade version and knew the game or you were flying blind. The game was the original Bionic Commando and I loved the shit out of it.

Another impulse buy was the original Final Fantasy. That game was so good, I didn't feel the need for a SuperNES... until I heard Final Fantasy II (nee IV) was coming. Good times, good times!

This game, saw it in a magazine, went out and bought it the very same day. Didn't even read the review, just looked at the pictures.

Golden Sun when I was 11 or 12; it got me into JRPGs, and because of it I still hold out some gap in my cynicism for that genre afterward because of it. Great game indeed.

More recently, Cave Story; At first I didn't get the hype for a game with what looked like either 8 or 16-bit graphics, but boy was I wrong in the best way possible. It was free so I tried it and it blew me away - 5 hours into it before I suddenly realized it was dark out and I was actually hungry, really hungry.

Damn, that was a good game.

This may sound surprising to anyone who reads this, but a game I bought that I nothing about was Team Fortress 2.

I'm serious. I never heard of it until I saw the game in the Orange Box. Besides overhearing a few conversations I knew nothing about it.

Started it up and I loved it. And I still play it.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R completely taken me aback within the first few minuets with its tactical gunplay and razor sharp AI. Even more so recently

Demons Souls sounded like my cup of tea and all of a sudden turns out to be pretty much the best RPG fantasy game of all time. Wow looks like I love depressing atmospheric games, which is odd because as a British person I presumably love cuteness and cuddles amirite? (small cookie for reference).

When I bought Half-Life 1, I didn't know anything about it. I wasn't really into gaming back then because I was still a kid. But me and my brother bought it and we couldn't stop playing even though I was really scared. To this day, it's still one of my favorite games.

Pokemon Blue. Yeah, at that time, I knew frag all about Pokemon at the time. You have never heard a 6 year old gasp so much.

Oh, and Prototype. Yeah, I loved that game. So much sadistic fun. :D

Hmmm.... depends on standards for awesomeness I guess, and if I had to have paid for the game with my own money. ;)

Earliest I suppose would be Knights of the Sky, an early WWI air combat game by MicroProse. Next would be Protostar, a sci-fi RPG/adventure game and spiritual successor to the classic Starflight.

I don't really buy games without knowing anything about them.

Team Fortress 2. I was getting the Orange Box for Half Life 2: Episode 2, and I was interested in Portal. I really did not know much of anything about TF2.

Flotilla. I got it as part of one of those "5 games for $5" bundles; I only wanted it for Gratuitous Space Battles, I literally did not care about the other 4, GSB was usually $20, so I was just "sweet". The other games: Altitude was enjoyable but only for an hour, Dogfighter was "meh", and absolutely no one played Plain Sight.
Flotilla though, was absolutely adorable. I didn't care so much for the full-3 dimensional battles in space, as I did for the hilarious humor and story of the campaign. I remember it for its endearing humor and wacky characters, who, more often than not, were talking animals.

Shin Megamia Tensei Persona 3 FES I never heard of any of them and I got it for $15 at Circuit City before it went under and it was pretty awesome.

Resident Evil 4, which I had only played once previously at a Gamestop in a mall on a school trip. After that, I rented Resident Evil 0, which I knew even less about. I am now totally and unabashedly obsessed with Resident Evil.

See what happens when you take risks on games that at first glance look like shit, kids?
